Odd knight's-move on mythological inspiration, but not unusual for GW. What they seem to be referencing is the head of Mimir, which was visited by Odin (Wotan, Votan, etc.) to draw knowledge from. But then, 'League of Mimir' is a vaguely silly name.

Will Squats be part of HH eventually? In fact, one aspect of the Heresy lore I dislike is how, apparently, all the Xenos races and rival Human civilisations just kind of back off for centuries while the Imperium (their greatest existential foe imaginable) do a bit of a fighty. I'd love to see at least the Rogue Trader-era races eventually turn up, even if just as minor factions.

This is fascinating. This opens up the possibility that the Votann were originally all over human space and were involved in the creation of the Men of iron. Also when consider the nature of the squats and their dwarven inspiration is it possible that the men of stone might have something to do with them as well. It would be interesting to know if a Votann was involved in the creation of the Mechanium and if the tech priests ever discovered of the Votann it would fuck them up. Or what if the top tech priests already know this but doing anything about it would cause them more trouble than it was worth. and What did the Emperor know about them. oh the possibilities...

After this article it became a bit clearer - in Northern European mythology Wotan/Odin is not only a god of military royalty, victory, etc., but also a god of wisdom, knowledge and sorcery. Which now ties with these Votann cogitators - a vast repositories of knowledge and problem-solving. Cool stuff. Can't wait to see more about them.

One thing that I noticed about Votann being the Germanic name for Odin, Odin is the god of secrets and forbidden knowledge as well as a warrior god. Perhaps the original settlers that became the squats named the STC's after this ancient earth god and have stuck with it for thousands of years. Because what does an STC do, provide secrets and almost forbidden knowledge.

I don't know of anyone in my gaming group who is going to call them the Leagues of Votann. We're calling them what they have always been and always will be: SQUATS!

Any one get vibes of the "Deep Thought" computer from Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (incased in a "Zardoz" style head)?

I like the armour, if they got an sct and they are all miners it would make sense for their armours to be like that, as the sct is probably producing mining armour and equipment, that they are adapting to war, i just want MUCH that their armour gets way more ornamented, as dwarfs in fantasy tend to make things going from genaration to generation, and it fits both warhammer (better than just plain bulky, it's very ugly and looks like world of warcraft) and adds a lot of character to their equipment, like the vostroyans do

These Ancestor Cores seem intelligent *enough* that a zealous inquisitor might well start shooting first and not bother to ask questions later. The imperium isn't exactly known for it's grasp of nuance

Works, its good to keep the factions distinct with their own cultures. Thats why warhammer works. There is potential for conflict between all factions so long as they have distinct cultures. Thats all you need.

I really like UR-25 as the only example of a Man of Iron in the miniatures range. Given how far off in the past they are, having this one single model in a niche part of the galaxy is perfect.

Votann = Zardoz? The secrets of the Leagues is that they are led by immortal Sean Connery in red pants. The Squats are presented as Scottish after all.
