Just to say, I started off with the Roland w30, then got the Roland SBX 1000, a sequencer which has no sound source, all it can do is sequence. But I loved it. I now use Cubase, but would love to return to the old style, without relying on a computer to make music. Let's hope this is the one, as they say.

Cool review man. One thing I can’t find anywhere though is does it do one finger transpose (either global or per track) from midi input? Say I’ve sequenced a bass line and I’m playing live chords over the top on a separate synth. My right hand is doing the live chords, but I want to change the key of the bass with my left hand. I need to be able to do it with one hand and not have to hold down a “shift” button to jump down, if that makes sense?

think I want one of these. I have a Pyramid currently. Ill miss the "live" mode of pyramid - but having direct access to the patters without going to a track sub-menu will be a godsend. the 2 "projects" seems quite versatile actually (v 64 tracks on pyramid) as you can run effectively 32 tracks on 2 screens (rather than 64 on 4 screens of pyramid) which is enough for me - OR can run 16 tracks and us the projects for unlimited patterns by loading one project while running the other.....kind of.

  • @TheTechnobear

Im pretty sure Im swap them once its available. Now I may KEEP Pyramid - maybe thers a way to integrate both.... Or I may sell it to part fund Hapax.

Yeah I think so… and something I’m exploring. I mean has to be midi/cv based … so I’m using physical modeling for this. I guess the thing to be careful of is it’s focus on patterns and current limit of 32 bars for pattern length. But that’s still a huge scope given you can essentially use patterns as part of song structure. Really powerful tool .. but at the end of the day it’s still just a tool ;)

So to clarify, does a project have 16 tracks, and each track has 8 patterns? Or does a project have 8 patterns, and each pattern has 16 tracks? This is an important distinction because the latter arrangement would imply that you were locked in to all tracks changing their active pattern at the same time, and that you had less flexibility to mix and match patterns. You couldn't have track 3 continuously looping its pattern 1 while track 5 is alternating between its pattern 7 and pattern 8. Or have staggered, overlapping sections, where e.g. one instrument keeps playing its verse riff for 2 additional measures while most other instruments have already switched to their chorus riffs.

@@TheTechnobear Awesome. And tbh this did become more apparent as I continued watching your video. Kudos on this btw - your insight has long been some of the most valuable in the squarp forums, so I'm thrilled to see you leading the way with this new offering. Does this make the Pyramid redundant, or are there still some important things that Pyramid can do that this cannot? The near-unlimited track lengths on Pyramid spring to mind, for example. Perhaps a better question would be how comfortable you would feel using Hapax as your only sequencer for a full set performance?

@@TheTechnobear Sorry for all the questions but I'm dying to know how well this solves some of Pyramid's most frustrating limitations. One of the most important - how easy is it to extract a pattern from Hapax as a MIDI file, edit it in a DAW, and then put it back into the project? Or to add it as a new pattern in an existing track in a *different* project? This was surprisingly tricky in Pyramid, requiring careful editing of the project's config file.

@@rdean150 with the parallel projects, more hands on UI , the hapax I think is much more suited to live performance. No , it doesn’t make pyramid redundant… the pyramid is still one of the best sequencers out there , and totally capable as it always has been ! Are there use-cases where pyramid is better - honestly not many , but it’s a bit smaller, cheaper and it’s very mature … stable as a rock, where hapax is work in progress. So far I’ve said, if hapax is out of your budget , I think you’ll find some bargains deals on the pyramid … and that’s a hell of a sequencer for that money. But new… I’d say hapax almost every time.

Hi Technobear, thanks very much for this very interesting ovrview! Would it be possible to use Hapax for "Arranged Live Looping"? Not audio looping obviously, but preparing a whole arrangement, that is basically empty and record the parts while the song is playing. I guess a necessity for this would b the ability to create empty clips, which can be used in multiple parts. best wishes! Marc

  • @TheTechnobear

    @TheTechnobear

    2 жыл бұрын

yes, it can do this.... you can program sections and then arrange into song, then record as you go along. the way I like to do this is actually, first of all record a track into patterns... just to feel how it flows... then if I want to perform it, then I can just quickly delete the notes/automation from the patterns (really quick to do in pattern view!) the important bit is, sections are a collection of any pattern... unlike a scene in ableton which is a row... so indeed, you can reuse patterns across sections. whats nice is you can also do a 'hybrid' ! so keep some patterns that are 'pre-recorded' that you dont want to play in, and others which are empty. even there you can mix things up, e.g. have a track that has no notes but has automation pre-recorded. (useful, as we only have 2 hands ... and you might want some movement as soon as you record) the one thing I miss is multitrack recording, so recording multiple tracks in one take... which is useful for things like split keyboards, or if you want to control what is being recorded from your master keyboard. but this is on the pyramid, so Im sure it will be in a future update. also we should remember we are in 'early days' of this firmware, Squarp have a reputation for improving things over months/years ... and Im sure Hapax will be the same. all that said, I think its great already !

I think its more, how many features did OXI One take from the Pyramid/Hermod... ;) If you know the Pyramid/Hermod, you can see the Hapax as an evolution from that... as for chord mode, I think more inspired by Kordbot , which also proceeded the OxiOne. thats the thing here... OxiOne is relatively new, new devs, and its obviously inspired by sequencers that came before it... and there is nothing wrong with that! in fact, arguably if products do NOT take ideas for others that is much worst for us.

something else to bare in mind... Squarp have been getting user feedback constantly from its community for over 5 years... so that has obviously influenced Hapax.

in this video? It's connect to my Mac/Ableton (iirc) , which has tracks for both hardware and vsts. I cannot remember exactly, what I used... likely a mix of Virus and probably u-he vsts and vahalla reverbs. the external/mpe controller I used is an Erae Touch.

@@TheTechnobear cool man, thank you. I am saving up for either this or the oxi-one. I use almost exclusively iPad apps for sounds (op-z being my only sound making hardware and thats incidental, I got it to sequence the iPad), the Oxi has a battery and bluetooth which is a huge edge over the hapax, and the oxi is deep, but the hapax is deeper. People say its overkill for the ipad, but why? Ipad can make all the sounds, and Hapax adds the haddware Workflow experience. Thoughts?

@@jospehbloseph7172 yeah, each has its pros and cons…. Both are very powerful. personally, i prefer the form factor of hapax But no denying, Oxi is much more portable and that has its appeal. Feature wise, just depends on your needs, they each have their own strengths … so you have to go thru manuals and see which one aligns most to your needs and preferred workflow.

@@TheTechnobear as close to elektron as possible, lol. I love that workflow. I know the Hapax has the 8 knobs that correspond to the 8 spots on the screen like the Elektron, that fits the way I like to fast create and sequence. Anyway, thanks for answering my questions. I appreciate the time.
