They mentioned the watermelon can easily crack. I’m thinking they cut it off the vine as soon as it has become cube-shaped to minimize risk of cracking. Almost like you’re blowing up a balloon too large and it could pop. However, I am curious what would happen if they changed the size of the cage little by little to get a larger one. Would it be more ripe and less of an ornamental plant? Would it keep its shape or crack?

Square watermelons were a novelty back around the late 1970s. Some grocery stores stacked them on top of each other. The novelty died out, and today, as this video points out, not many Japanese farmers are willing to go to the extreme amount of labor to get square melons.

I don’t think most people in this comment section understand that fruits(along with a range of other items) in Japan don’t serve only the purpose of being fruits/food. They are often a sign of status and appreciation. A status sign because they charge *so much* more for the best looking fruits, like perfectly shaped vivid-red strawberries and the square watermelons. And not everyone has the money to spare on something like that instead of buying something that is useful(actual food, clothes, etc). An exemple on how it’s a sign of appreciation can be noticed if you look at the end of the video, there’s perfect looking melons with ribbons on the shelf, their purpose is to serve as gifts to show someone you appreciate them.

I take offense to this. Sushi was fast food in japan. Until AMERICANS (which I am) drove up the price of it. Also think about Japan. Do you see tons of space to grow produce? So land to grow is very expensive considering there is almost no free land. Japan is very tiny. Which is why the prices are very high.

magebotjz2 That's my point exactly. They already don't have a lot of land, yet they waste it by growing watermelons that cannot be eaten for ornamental purposes. Oh yes, sushi is still considered fast food, that doesn't mean it's not expense. Btw, how much does a Mcdonald's Big Mac cost in Japan now? Last time I was there I seem to recall it was about 900 yen, which was about $9 at the time.

Better than Debeers: How to turn a worthless rock that's only good for keeping saws sharp into the most iconic symbol of love in the world, then use that value to fuel war. The Japanese aren't the only ones trying to inflate the value of objects in food. All you've proved with your comment is that you are a racist by tying this act of wastefulness exclusively to Japan (which is dumb in itself because just because a few people in Japan thought it was a good idea, apparently it means all of Japan thought it was a good idea) Btw, beef is expensive in Japan, which is why big-macs are so expensive, and its more of a novelty food of "this is what American's eat". Which makes me questions why the hell you were in a Mc Donalds in Japan anyway.

If you cant eat it because its not ripe enough, Then why not build a bigger square box so it has more time to fill the space and get ripe. $100 bucks seems kinda steep for some damn square fruit. no matter how rare it is. It's one of those things you see like "cool" now what lol.

just a made up theory but i think its because if the case is to big it might not fill because watermelons dont grow bigger that certaint size. and letting it rip may let melons be prone to crack.
