Reminds me, in ~ 9th grade I encountered some stuff using the capital-sigma (summation) and capital-pi notation (product). At the time I didn't know what it meant, math teacher didn't know either. Back at this time, PC's in school was more of a novelty (mostly constrained to the school library, generally running Win95 or Win98); most everything in-class was done on paper, or via overhead projectors and transparencies...

A bit of a late reply, but I found that in high school it usually did the opposite for me because the teacher would turn off the lights completely to give the lecture on the SmartBoard. This just made me sleepy and often times I'd dab off mid-lecture or even once end up in a nearly lucid daydreaming state // Hallucinating // sleep paralysis which immediately woke me up and terrified me. It seemed to work for some though but turning off the lights just instinctually made me sleepy and disengaged. But in this video it had the desired effect of extreme focus, so perhaps it simply is the lighting that is problematic. It seemed to work in biology classes for example, but in those cases there was still some dim light coming through the window and all the students had their laptops up so you're always somewhat engaged with typing notes (which isn't that effective with math as most word processing tools can't easily or efficiently parse mathematical input without spending 2 minutes searching for each symbol and exponent)

@Tibee : This is a genuine comment. I have been watching your videos for quite some time now but never commented. I think a lot of people have math knowledge but the bit that’s lacking is a way to explain those difficult concepts. The way you are merging real visible life with the math knowledge and the communication so crisp, clear and slow I am very damn sure that you will be a great asset to any university and children you teach in future. I guess the world needs more teachers like you who can interplay math and real life providing a wholesome perspective on things rather than just cramming down math in a student’s mind. Keep producing such content. I have been wanting a way back to study math more rigorously now. Was a good enough student in math back in the day but lost the vigor along the way. Thanks for producing such content. Kudos to you and your team on doing such an awesome job.

Toby, your channel is one of a handful of KZread channels which I follow precisely because you are positive, uplifting, educational, and informative. Your natural charm and teaching skills make even complex topics fun to explore. With square roots you are dealing with the upper limits of my math knowledge, and your videos on deeper, more complex topics often leave me baffled because you are so far beyond my math capabilities. Even so, your presentations are so delightful that I watch and listen anyway, because as I have said often before, you could read a phone book or auto owners handbook aloud and it would be totally charming. Thank you for making me smile and teaching this old dog some new tricks.

Like a lot of people here, I often don't have a big interest in the subject like square roots but Tibees' videos are so charming that I can't resist... :)

    Very cool video, made me notice that the perfect squares move up _perfectly_ with added _oddness._ X + [ X [ X - 1] ] // where X is a whole number difference between 0 and 1 is 1, difference between 1 and 4 is 3, difference between 4 and 9 is 5, difference between 9 and 16 is 7, etc : D
