    About 10 years ago i started layering wood chips like you because my soil was a solid clay pan, and the wood chips I could get all I wanted free locally delivered, they just wanted to get rid of them. Over the years I still go through about 6-8 loads of chips, I have a 1/4acre garden. But about 6 years ago, I was able to get a ton of 2x8 lumber for free and built raised beds on top of my wood chips garden. Over the years they of course decompose and i just chip the paths between beds, but I keep another two piles of wood chips that I treat as compost piles, which that is the mostly decomposed material I use every season to top of my beds. Probably over the past 3 years, my yields has been exponential. Not only are we feeding our entire house but about a dozen families on our street, its really quite insane. We are able to squeeze in more crops, harvest is super easy and space/efficiency has been maximized. Thanks for doing these videos.

    if you are using wood chips on the garden, what would happen when you try to turn the soil next season, is that ok for the soil. would not that be too much wood chips on the soil. thanks

  • @venomsailor

    @venomsailor

    So I don’t turn my wood chips I just plant directly down in them. After a year or so once you pull back about an inch you reach black gold in the form or great soil. Plus you shouldn’t turn your gardens. That encourages wind and water erosion of everything that is good in a garden, like minerals

    @@batikh100 you definitely don't want to mix the soil with not composted wood chips. What I have seen on YT this is the common mistake and reason for people blaming the BTE is not working. Wood chips mixed with the soil will take the nitrogen from it to decompose. The natural way is like in nature - just adding new layers on the top.

There was a LOT of effort to keep up with the weeds only to have deer and birds devour the vegies, grapes, etc. it was overwhelming and I decided to not plant again....until I found your channel!:) Now I have a new plan, going to try things I have never tried before, and all thanks to you! I am excited to get started. Thanks! Happy Gardening:) Sending little Tuck lots of love and Happy Birthday wishes!

    I have been doing this from the start of my veggie patch, but I cut food grade bottles into tubes and plant inside the "grow tubes" that are sunk into the soil about 1 inch, great for water retention as well as giving the various plants different amounts of water inside the grow tubes, also cuts down on weeds.

What I love about it is I never put two of the same crops in adjoining squares, one it helps in natural pest reduction by not concentrating the plants and two it makes the garden look incredibly pretty. Enjoy your beautiful garden, from new Zealand!

    James, good to see you again! I did the same thing today with the help of my grandson. It was his idea to use all my planters that were the same height and width. They all measured 14 inches tall, 12 inches wide. He put a 10 inch layer of wood chips over very large pieces of cardboard. Then we filled each planter with compost and lined them up on the wood chips. He told me no weeds for me to worry about. We did 4 planters wide and 10 planters long. It looks like a raised garden. My grandson told me he wanted me to garden easier this year. I had surgery and I'm getting back into the garden slower than usual. But he's going to help me this year. My great grand daughters will be helping this year too. They wish a fabulous birthday to your dog!!!! Love from south Texas and many Blessings too.

    @@shar3332 Sharon, we did them on the ground, but my oldest daughter did this same thing on her patio!!! NO WEEDS!!!! She lined them up, the planters, at the edge of her patio, all three sides. It is fenced in by a eight foot tall privacy fence. So my son in law did put in some cattle panels on the fence, using u shaped nails to hold them up, for the tomatoes and cucumbers. Now, it got better as they thought out the plan....he did have some four by four timbers that he used as a base for the platers to sit on. It made the tallest planters four inches taller! A great help for her back. Then just today they added 10 inch tall planters in front of the tall planters, so it looks like two tiers! Those he planted with flowers. It's so neat and tidy. We will do the same thing here at my home for all the herbs. I hope this will work out for you. Blessings from south Texas.

    James, you doing well? I planted my spring garden, last Monday. I think some of it is already germinating. I still have spinach from my fall garden of 2019. I'm eating spinach and asparagus now.

    @@jamesprigioni Maybe try putting a pepper plant in the exposed earth bed since I've found my peppers are happier with the exposed the soil that stays warmer they seem to like better than the cool soil under the wood chips. But everything else has done well with woodchips, just peppers are a tropical plant and love all the heat.
