  • @bennyfromthe72

    FF VIII and later really don't need a remake imo. They are really good looking games, even now. VII rightly deserves one as the graphics don't do it justice, especially the character models outside combat. But, a complete remake of VI, that would be grand! The Opera scene, Narshe, the floating Continent, Shadow etc... Super HD and slick, but faithful to the particular gothic/'steamy' world Amano helped to create through his illustrations. This very particular feel in the characters portraits (in the menu) and the monsters sprites, the elegantly strange and organic structure of the dungeons (Floating Continent, Kefka Tower).

The reason why I think he was mind controlled was because during that time Edea was under control herself.

  • @ReCoNiCiouS

    @ReCoNiCiouS

    @@Diamond_2403 Keep in mind that Seifer knew Ultimecia was inside Edea (we know that by the time Ellone sends Squall back when Ultimecia gets out of Edea and inside Rinoa), meaning either 1) he is mind-controlled by Ultimecia's consciousness inside Edea's body and then she (Ultimecia) was keeping her consciousness in Squall's (or Seifer's you can also say) present without unlocking Rinoa's consciousness to keep Seifer mind-controlled, which seems a bit off to me, or 2) she actually convinced him that his true nature and destiny (typical word for FF games) is to be rebellious and serve her evil plans where i mostly agree. Also guys (this is for everyone seeing this comment), it's not a time loop that Ultimecia passes her powers on Edea. Ultimecia died in all timelines. She couldn't find any sorceresses in the future, as all suppress their powers, so she went in the past to find one. In reality we have an answer about Bermuda triangle, that the extreme weather phenomena there create a distance jump through (long story short). Things can take action beyond time or/and space. My conclusion is the best phrase said in the game, which was by Irvine: Life has infinite possibilities. This phrase is in my mind since i read it back when i first finished the game in 2003 and it's set like this when cases about time or ""unrealistic"" events are in a discussion. Yeah, i needed 4+ years to finish the game with a lot of frustration, lack of knowledge, immature strategies and restarts after long-time breaks considering i was only 9-13 yo.

    My first FF as well. Despite being a huge Chrono Trigger fan, I had never played FFVI on SNES and I didn't have a PlayStation when FFVII came out, so this is where I started. I love the world, the score (one of the best in series, I'd say), the characters, the much maligned junction system and, of course, the greatest mini-game in the whole series, Triple Triad. I would say that the one thing that I despite is the whole, "the GFs made us forget". I would've liked something a bit more nuanced than a collective amnesia. I really wish that the Steam version of Outside of that, still my favorite FF, and one of my favorite RPGs (obviously behind Chrono Trigger though, I mean come on). It deserves much more than the poor Steam port that it got. Square's efforts on that front, of bringing their revered games to newer platforms, have been incredibly poor.

    Squall sucks compared to Zidane. Squall and Cloud are basically the same personality. The "too cool for school" types. Zidane on the other hand is what a man should be. Funny, perverted, and cocky. He doesn't start off as some important leader. He starts off as a mere thief who later discovers he has a greater purpose in this world and becomes a pivotal role in all his companion's destiny. Zidane actually had an impact on everyone. Apart from Rinoa, I don't think Squall had any connection to any of the characters.

    Well, Squall and Cloud did not start of as important leader too though. I agree with you about Squall, i personally think they should make Squall stay moody like the first time we knew him or at least make his character develop more slowly. I mean we are talking about an introvert teen that shut off everyone else for 99% of his lifetime and he's struggling with abandonment issue then he's suddenly falls in love with this annoying girl. I just felt like they developed his character way too fast. At first he enjoy talking to himself, consider his option logically, always avoid getting involved with other people business and then we saw him having a mental breakdown and screaming at other people in Galbadia Garden. This is the same guy who doesn't think twice about killing another person when Irvine, a trained sharpshooter, have a second thought about it. Dont get me wrong, i love FFVIII it's my first RPG i've ever played, it's always have special place in my heart.

    Squall is one of my top three favorite protagonists in Final Fantasy not because of his gunblade,or leadership,but because of his background. I remember playing the game in my teenage years when it was first released. I connected with Squall because the story helped me realize, that subconsciously I was shutting people out in my life. Due to an event in my childhood where I felt abandoned, and unknowingly decided. That if I didn't try to form relationships with others, that there would be no risk. That I could be hurt again by anyone emotionally so in a way Final Fantasy VIII changed my life.

(I also got into the FF series very recently starting with 7 after the Remake announcement, now have played 6-10, 12, and 15. Fantastic series). 8 is my second favorite, and Squall is a top 3 FF character for me.

    Just remember that even the decision to not form relationships is itself a decision. I know it's hard to see sometimes, but coming through it, the lesson here always was twofold. One, you *cannot* go it alone; and two, you are never alone. Even if you don't want to form those bonds, they will always exist. Care for the people who care about you. Even if it's the "loud" dude who always wants hot dogs or a girl with a MAJOR SPEECH IMPEDIMENT. They're the people in your life - and no matter what, you only get to live it once. Time compression, visiting the past, it doesn't matter - we get one life. Make it the best one you can.

    Knew this was going to be good when he mentioned Laguna being Seifer's inspiration. Such an incredible story beat that is so subtle. I wish FF8 made more of the rivalry between Squall and Seifer, the final battle with him being a 3 on 1 was lame. Also might have been worth mentioning Julia being Rinoa's mother and how her failed romance with Laguna was carried on through their children after a seemingly unhappy life with Caraway. And Julia's first song is Squall and Rinoa's theme. Such great stuff, anyone who says FF8 is bad doesn't know what they're talking about! Will definitely check out more of these videos, I'd be very interested in a summary of the R=U and S=G theories.

  • @detusai

    @detusai

    6 жыл бұрын

    Squall did not start out as a leader, in fact due to his introverted personality and his inability to work with others, this was a challenge for him at first. He didn't start out as some dude from some nobility household, he was an orphan who was trained to fight the woman who helped raise him. However, thanks to Rinoa and his comrades, he was able to grow out of his shell as they did see a potential in him. Although the main focus was him and Rinoa, he did impact the rest of his friends, and also those who fought in Balamb Garden. The only reason why he chose to go with Rinoa is because this was the first time he truly felt connected to someone and his friends understood that and fought with him till the very end. If that doesn't show that he hadn't impacted anyone, I don't know what else. If you like Zidane, great, but to compare them is just silly. They have different personalities and stories.

    Squall was my first experience with a RPG protagonist and I have always been supportive of his archetype. Upon the release of the game my peers however were dismissive of his perceived apprehensive personality. Though I believe at the time they were unfamiliar with concepts like character development and the hero's journey. Though they never hesitated to remind me of their dissatisfaction of his personality. While I was playing I never doubted he would grow into a sympathetic hero throughout the course of the story. I to this day feel he is a more realistic character than most other protagonist featured in the Final Fantasy series, with the exclusion of Noctis and his company who are probably more realistic than most people expected prior to FF XV’s release. Squall is not an emotionless dead eyed super soldier like Cloud, he’s not overly cheerful and optimistic like Tidus and he’s not the cold distant and stoic warrior like Lightning. Squall is more relatable to the angst and uncertainty found in the series’s target male demographic. This is especially true if you’ve ever met an orphan, foster child or happen to be one yourself. They carry a more emotionally independent demeanor than most people raised in a typical family unit. To this day I feel he has one of if not the coolest concept design found in Final Fantasy protagonists, one of the coolest weapons and I am glad I began my potentially lifelong Final Fantasy appreciation with this game and its compelling characters.

    Squall is not more realistic character than any of the ones you mentioned, you are taking their personality out of context and complitely misrepresenting them. Being more realistic doesn't make him an inherently better character either as FF games are set in fantasy worlds that greatly deviate from our own so adhering to realism is not a concern and should never be a criteria for quality of character writing, the word you are looking for is authentic Cloud, Tidus and many more very much are.

    I have only FFVII so far, so I'm only gonna talk aboud Cloud here. Tbh, seeing you call him "emotionless dead eyed super soldier" makes me wonder if you actually read the dialogue while you played, or if you truly played at all. There are a lot of situations during the game where he shows emotion, three of those truly impossible to miss, even if you are purposefully trying to ignore the character, those being Aerith's death (don't start with the spoiler thing, it's a 25 years old game and it's the most spoiled death in the history of videogames), Tifa fixing his mind, and then the last conversation he and Tifa have, alone under the Highwind, before going face to face with Sephiroth. Then as minor things, you have the Gold Saucer scenes, the Nibelheim flashback, the actual visit to the place, how he behaves at the end of the first visit to the northern crater, meeting Zack's parents, etc. Is that "emotionless dead eyed super soldier"? Whatever happened to "emotionless" when Hojo realizes who he is? Whatever happened to "super soldier" after Mideel? Whatever happened to "dead eyed" when Tifa found him at the train station? That's what I thought.

When there are deeper characters in the franchise than those two. Squall was head of his time IMO as far as progression of a character goes. I don't care what any one says the battle between the gardens is one of the best set pieces in any final fantasy. You have squall having to step up and lead a ton of people, keep in mind he's still in his teens at this point. Just good stuff

    Final Fantasy VIII story is the most underrated in the entire saga, sure the point of the protagonists been all together in an orphanage and none of them remenbering it beacuse of the use of the GF was an absurd aspect in the narrative...but all the bond between the Laguna´s and Squall stories is incredible, if you think about it you will realize that Laguna´s first love was Julia, a love that never came to happen, but Laguna´s son, Squall felt in love with the daughter of Laguna´s first impossible love. In the end it doesn´t matter the load of shit that a lot of FF VIII haters had spread along the years, the story of VIII is one of the most incredible and touching in the history of gaming. I so relate to Squall... but see he is one of the FF protagonist that don’t always have to be happy and chipper to still leave a grand impression of iconic FF characters. I hate how people always expect the protagonist to be upbeat and happy to be a interesting character. That’s not how the world works irl or ingame, there’s people who not always happy go lucky. But at the same time still leaves impressions and not always in a negative way.

    Games apologies on late reply just now seeing this... Right annoying chipper like Tidus, which is why Squall is one of my favs. He not born the way he is now, theres a reason to what he became. And he not moody and emo, just distant and standoffish. Which makes him realistic and relatible to some. Almost just Like Noctis due to how his life end to the start of 15 (which wasnt fully explained during the game) people considered him bland and generic; and sometimes off putting. But ppl didnt get to see how he became that way, another character that was more down to earth and realistic.

    JuniBoy78 thats what i mean you got characters that go through difficult ordeals and still play out oh well im a happy guy lets keep trucking attitude; "like tf, really?! " you been through some shit and you still wanna laugh, pet the wildlife animals and skip along like this some disney movie!? Yet some ppl like that, like nothing just happened to actually affect the character. How is that giving the character depth and motivation to see anything through. I understand ppl cope differently. But if you cant see a character react to the tough situation they was involved in, then how can you feel any emotional distress with the character if they not even affected by their own turmoil?

    Exactly! Thank you, & well said! Imagine Squall being an upbeat & cheerful character, no I can’t because it wouldn’t fit his character since he grew up being lonely in most of his life, & I can understand why he’s like that, & I like his personality traits as an edgy character. And I can relate to him in some aspects since I too am an introvert, & I don’t have many friends growing up. So I can understand where Squall is coming from, & why he’s my 2nd favorite Final Fantasy Protagonist, just Cloud as my favorite character of all-time.

    This seemed more like FF8 summary video, but idc, it was excellent! Haha. I loved the all the info in this video and I enjoyed the refresh of the game, as well as everything about Squall. It really helps understand him better and his personality changes through the game. I wasn't much of a fan of Squall, tho I did like playing FF8 very much. This video helps me to better understand and appreciate him more then I did before. It also really makes me want to play FF8 again. Dang you! Lol. Excellent video as always and one I'm sure more then a couple of people have been waiting for. Myself included. I really don't know who id like to see next yet. Maybe I'll come back and add it in later. Again, great video! Thank you!

    Currently watching your video and I don't know if anyone brought this up already but at 22:44 during the party scene, I learned recently this scene plays out much differently if the right instruments are selected that will play an Irish song. Rinoa doesn't run off angrily and she and Squall talk during the event. It's such a nice detail that adds to their development that it's actually frustrating that it could be potentially missed out on so easily.

    This was very well done, great job! One of my favorite FF games ever, and Squall is definitely my favorite protagonist. One suggestion: I felt like you could've expounded a little more on the different interactions Rinoa and Squall can have when you choose different story options which hinted at the subtle changes in his feelings towards her and his friends. I.e., if Rinoa is sent on the missile base mission instead of coming back to the Garden with Squall, their reunion at FH is much different and possibly much more heartwarming, he being clearly happy to see her. And if you select the correct instruments for the irish jig for the celebration at FH, the interaction between Squall and Rinoa is much more romantic, and thus it doesn't seem as far-fetched when he begins expressing his feelings towards her when she falls into a coma. All of this of course playing into his own character development of opening up to others. Otherwise, great job again on summarizing an amazing game!

    Yea, it was something I thought about, but it ended up being difficult to integrate the optional paths while keeping a coherent flow, so I decided to just choose one path. Glad you enjoyed it though! :) ~Darryl

    I know i'm a month behind, but i think that for future videos the "optimal" path/ true ending would be the best way to go about it. that particular section with the irish jig makes it so much more believable i have to think that was the intended route the devs made.
