Fun Fact: Insomniac invented a little thing called Level of Detail for this very game. Rather than using fog to cover up poor draw distance, each structure or part of the landscape would get less detailed the farther you got from it and vice versa, ensuring the world's still _look_ big but don't mess with the game's performance!

Did they actually invent it though? There were plenty of games that used lower poly models when seen at a distance. Super Mario 64 being another example. I would at least give them credit for having the structures visible, but not having any rendered textures until close. I dont think I've seen any other game do that specifically.

ThundagaT2 Yeah they realized the PS1 could render a Lot more untextured Polygons than textured ones. I think they were the first to use level of detail on the PS, but Games on other Systems propably did it First.

LOD existed way before this, just maybe not on the PS1. it was being used on PC at the time and as someone pointed out, SM 64.

I think the point is that it's unique application of LOD, where it's used on the environment's textures as well as the objects' polys.

The thing that always bugged me-even as a kid-about releasing the dragons is that sometimes their dialog just explained a game mechanic that you _had_ to already use just to release the dragon in the first place. Like, thanks for telling me how to defeat the enemies that were in front of you… after I already did.

I think the designers assumed folks would... circumvent the enemies that they couldn't defeat, save the dragons, and then you'd learn how to deal with them in case you didn't know. ...then there's the moments where you absolutely need to use a glide to reach them, and then they teach you about the glide. Yeah, unless they talk about "do it at the tip of the top of the tip of your jump" schpiel (which is common sense but what can ya do), no excuses about that one.

It doesn't surprise me, even Spyro 2's roadblocks are easy, the one I notice a lot is Autumn Plain's professor door needing 8 orbs. But for me Spyro 1's Beast Maker's balloonist I need more dragons, otherwise I just get enough for every level. So 100% players rarely notice it, but I too thought I'd comment on that, since it should have been noticed when making a re-review. Or even as a Spyro fan, its not a tough detail to miss.

  • @suntannedduck2388

I attempted to try a playthrough where I get less collectables, but the Spyro wiki has the requirements for the game so I gave up on that playthrough and I also watched a Spyro 2 video on the requirements or skipped over dialogue responses and the games roadblocks are really easy. The highest of requirements is like 40 or so orbs I think for Ripto or something else. Its just sad when you 100% it but notice the easy requirements. Spyro 3's I don't know though about its roadblocks since for the most part I thought only Sunrise Spring's level needed the egg counts, but I 100% the game everytime I play and not checked the wiki so I'm not sure. But considering doing it now to be sure. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4B6x7KzYKyrdKQ.html (Spyro 2 gem/orb roadblocks) spyro.wikia.com/wiki/Balloonists (balloonists requirements) That seems about it for my findings of requirements unless you really do play the game with less collecting.

How would you make it more difficult though? Ramping up the baloonist requirements? Most people just try to collect everything by default, so of course they'll meet the requirements once they speak to the balloonist. And a lot of the stages have some well hidden / hard to reach spots that took my father and me hours to find back in the day. The key in Stone Hill, the Dragon in Dry Canyon, the gems behind the start of Cliff Town and of course the two most infamous levels, Tree Tops and Haunted Towers. Nowadays you can of course just look this up on the internet and most of us remember how to reach those spots after playing it once. But back then it was pretty challenging, especially for a child. One of my friends never managed to get 100%.

If you 100% only because you want a reward, then stop, because you should only 100% a game because you enjoy playing it, and if you dont enjoy the things you have to do to 100% it, then the only thing a 100% reward does is make you feel obligated to play through missions that you personally dont enjoy. not from me. I totaly agree. I much prefere the simplicity of spyro 1 to Spyro 2. While i generaly like how they the attempt of more storytelling its to much packed with two times minigames that are not so fun for the most part, so i never 100% it. Still play if from time to time. Spyro 3 made everything a lot better but i still like the first Spyro the most.

Blazingfury05 _ I understand how you feel... sort of. The original 3 are my personal faves, but I did enjoy the Legend of Spyro trilogy a bit. Or I more really liked the *potential* of those games, with the last one really being good for me. There were just a lot of things that they dropped the ball on, like the combat in the first two games and... ugh... *Sparx* among others (seriously couldn't stand Sparx in any of the games). The soundtrack was amazing though. I'd really like to see Toys For Bob reboot that trilogy and fix some of those flaws.
