Nice vid but you're wrong about the corrosion resistance, surfinggringo from the spydie forums or whatever his forum name is has tested 110V out on his fishing trips, he spends his entire life in salt water and has said many times 110v was the second best corrosion resistant steel of the bunch after H1 and LC200N. He's easily the most reputable source for steel testing in corrosive environments and Sal from spyderco himself has noted his findings.

Love the point about the 'fidgeting factor' I cant help myself because at every spare second I play with my PM2 because its so damn great to play with. I will however buy one of these for my every day use thanks to your vid...keep up the good work ! Cant wait till the PM3 hits our shores.

Spyderco makes my favorite knives and I like the look.

Are the scales pinned so they can't be switched out or adjusted, or is that only on the one side?

This review held up well over the years. Seems like the G10 version with full liners would address the lack of fiddliness problem, but at the expense of adding weight (almost double) and cost. I had one of these before, in translucent blue and BD1. I carried it in my back pocket, which was not used for anything else and despite its width, I could forget I was carrying a big knife because it is so thin and light. Carrying it on the front pocket was a different story, as you've alluded to. I had to scrape the back of my hand against those notches on the back every time I put my hand in there. I now find myself on the fence: Do I get another Lightweight, for the light weight & thinness or try a G10 to get that fiddle factor back, but maybe end up not carrying it because it's double the weight? :-\

Not counting it's proven that 3 in 1 is better than WD-40 to prevent corrosion on blades. Same about food, not suitable, yes, but you can wash your knife before touching something to be eaten.

@Jacob Dawson He did not. Modern steels have plusses and minuses. M390 is better for some things or people than s110v and vice versa.

Own one, and if you have smaller sizes hands like myself you are gonna have trouble manipulating the lock as I can barely pull the cage back enough to disengage the lock. So probably not knife for small plams.

Handle on these is actually not FRN it is a fiberglass reinforced co polymer instead

Anybody know if you can use Ballistol as an Oil for knives? Seems to be a good idea, since it's food safe? But I'm not sure if it doesn't gum up over time? Similar to how organic chainsaw oils would do? (I'm not sure you have it over in US, but it's worth a Google at least! Great stuff!)

Ballistol is a great oil for knives. It does not gum up and, interestingly enough, will emulsify with water.

I would say use Gun oil not WD-40 but I don't know if gun oil is available down under. Great knife and incredible steel. That powdered alloy steel rocks!

Yeah not a great deal of gun oil around. I used WD40 for cleaning only, and order 10 weight nano oil in for my pivots :)

IIRC, hoppes #9 and WD-40 use a very similar set of lubricating compounds. The big difference is gun oil doesn't have the propellant and solvents that WD-40 have but those are going to flash off.

I sharpen my spyderco s110v s with a dc3 in about 45 seconds it's by far the easiest

I just ordered one and I cant wait to get it. Oh shit this vid is old so who cares. Still cant wait.

Really nice looking knife and appears to be highly functional. What would be the closest thing on Spyderco's range to this that comes with a liner or frame lock?

Bushcraft Tasmania probably the military (a little bigger but liner locking) or the Sage 2 (smaller though) - the native 5 is also a lockback with a similar pattern, and a bit smaller. The endura would perform similarly to this one too!

Cool. Thanks! The Endura's always appeared 'anorexic' to me (prefer something a bit more stout - like my women). But I do like the look of the Sage 2 and Native 5.

The Endura sure does have that spidery aesthetic down, it's an elegant design for such a ruggedly utilitarian build for sure. There is also a lockback Manix and Manix XL that people seem to really like, the Slysz Bowie is fairly similar to what you're looking for, and the Hungarian is dressy but with such a wonderfully functional blade profile that I think it's underappreciated.

I’m looking at getting the Spyderco Manix lw in s110v, but I like to stop my blades everyday to avoid having to remove extra steel , but from what I have heard s110v needs to have a toothy edge and I was wondering if I can still strop everyday ? I have a block stop one side black and one side green compound called flex stop I believe. And I also have S30V military and if that an be stropped everyday also because I have heard that needs a toothy edge as well. Probably sounds like a ridiculous question but most of my blades are vg 10 , so don’t really know how to go about this tough super steels, cheers Zac.

I know your comment is a year old and in the knife world that's like 30 years. But I consider myself a decent sharpener. In that I run kitchens for a living a sharpen everything from my work tools to my edc folding knives. I own this exact s110v manix. I sharpen it with an extra fine lansky diamond bench plate, (400 on the fepa scale) then a king 1000 grit stone, then a 1 micron diamond spray on cows hide glued to a 2x4. If your technique is on point, achieving a burr on each "stone" you use. I maybe strop for about 30 seconds total and the edge is ridiculous. The 1 micron spray REALLY polishes the toothy edge to the point of what almost everyone would consider a mirror edge. I've been experimenting with a lot of different types of finishes on the s110v and it will hold whatever edge I put on it FOREVER!!! In my opinion, the s110v does not make for a good light duty edc steel without the 1 micron diamond strop. If you are cutting cardboard all day, it's incredible, but looses its ability to slide through paper envelopes fairly quickly. Once you get that diamond strop in the mix, it transforms into the best edc steel I've come across. I did just order the venev 800-1200 diamond stones from gritomatic, so we'll see where I can take this beautiful steel! Good luck!

So weird. Most reviews say allot of the same about this knife. Other than the plastic... i havent ran into any of it. Spydie hole is nice and smooth. Drops shut quick as any spydie i own (without adjusting pivot and with no play). If anything id like to have a version of the manix that is 80% the size of the manix 2. Ive got large hands and still this knife seem just a touch large.

See, as for his comment about fidgeting with the knife, i disagree. Manix 2 lw in BD1, and now the lock is much smoother and fun to play with after owning it for a while. Still requiring thumb and finger to easily swing it open or shut though. Still fun though :) It's my most played with knife, followed by some ball bearing flipper knives. Spydie holes are fun to flick with your middle finger, and the ball bearing lock lets you pull it back and swing open or shut too!

+Iokua Joshua I’ve handed a couple different manixes now - and I reckon the various steel finishes make the action differ. The maxamet one is heavily tumbled and is really smooth to operate and flick about as well, so I totally see your point

I can't make up my mind between the Native 5 or Manix lightweight 2 I change my mind weekly

Howard green I had the native in this steel, too. A fairly forgettable, utility style knife, and has kinda a smaller version of this handle, but with a less fun backlock. The corners seemed to be a little less comfy on that one, too. I never found myself taking it out for edc, and its a little small and thin to be a proper work knife. I would advise the Manix or the PM2.

There is a G10 version of it. And it is much better IMHO. It has the same blurple scales as PM2, bushing pivot makes it easy to play and flick. Feels better in hand. Not like plastic toy. And still there is the same great ergo and steel. Like it more than PM2;)

I agree, I have a G10 Manix2 and a G10 PM2 both in CPM S110V and I prefer the first for the leaf shape blade, not exactly for the locking type. Too pointy the PM2.
