Spurs Ball Movement

Спорт

Gregg Popovich had one message during the 2014 Finals that has really said everything there needs to be said about the Spurs and their culture. Nevermind the masterful motion offense, and the intricate misdirections in their sets. Never mind all that. “You move it or you die.”
There’s brilliance and beauty in the ball movement. There’s a sort of energy that is generated when the ball is whipping about, from player to player, but only when there is purpose. Side to side ball movement, where nothing is happening, or passing for passing’s sake is pointless. What San Antonio does is purposeful and precise. Their unselfishness is powerful, and the proficiency in their process has shone through. Everyone will remember how the Spurs moved the ball with conviction, and conquered Miami during that title run. The humiliation of the Heat was humbling for the reigning two-time champions, but it is my belief that few teams would’ve been able to stop the offensive onslaught that occurred.
Here now, I present some of the Spurs’ finer moments in terms of sharing the rock. Obviously, this is not all encompassing, and there are many others out there like it, but this is my little contribution. There are great individuals on this squad, but truly, their whole is so very much greater than the sum of their parts.

i don't know much about basketball, especially NBA so i might be completely wrong in this, but the unselfishness is why i prefer college basketball over NBA. it looks like there are more system teams and a bigger focus on culture than superstar power and having all the tallest guys. take michigan this year for example. watching them go through march madness without isaiah livers was beautiful because they had to become even more efficient as a team to beat teams like LSU who had those superstar 3 shooters.

Tim Duncan making defenses make mistakes is incredibly satisfying to watch. Everyone collapses on him in the middle because he is virtually unstoppable as a post scorer one on one. Watching him just immediately dish it to the corners or wings when he feels the defense playing help side defense is just incredible. As a basketball purist, he might be the most fundamental player of all time.

The Spurs single-handedly brought back the old-era style of basketball from the 50's-80's. The 90's - late 2000's was the ISO-Ball era. All about giving the ball to your best player and letting them go 1-on-1 to create something or off the PnR to try and attack. Popovich brought back the PnR-Motion Offense that involves moving the ball at a high rate to create space and have the defenders trying to catch up to the ball at all times, as well as create mismatches off of switches and then trying to exploit that mismatch. It's a copy-cat league and other teams have started doing it as well over the pas 4 or 5 years. Notice how the Hawks and Warriors both have started running the same offense, and they're both coached by disciples of Popovich? It's good to see. Much better and more effective than ISO-ball.

In fact, what I find boring is the one on one ISO plays that used to be rampant in the NBA. This was "warriors basketball" before the GSWs. In fact this is kinda what basketball became in the US. I remember watching so much basketball until around 2018. Been watching less and less every year since about then

This is pure genius from Pop. The Spurs superstars were ageing yet where smart enough to adapt and beat younger and more athletic teams like the Thunder. I didn't think they could beat KD and Russ in their youth.

It’s honestly sad seeing this now with my generation of hoopers who can’t get to the ball to Wembanyama who looks like he deadass could be a 7’3 Durant-esque type of player

The continuous motion of players, the ball swing, the slashes, unselfish from good to great offense. That’s Spurs trademark that have been replicated by many teams. The Beautiful game.

Imagine if Golden state had this type of unselfish basketball with the splash brothers. Combining the legendary offense of the Spurs with the absolute top tier shooting ability of Steph and Klay. Those final playoff games Golden State this year had much selfish basketball.

Their dazzling plays, nifty passing and stifling defense earned them 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 Thanks to the Big Three and on the latter part KLAWhi and D Green. Love it when they just trade baskets in the first half and blow the game open usually in the 3rd quarter and just manage the lead in the 4th, choking defense and clutch baskets.

i kinda miss Tiago and Diaw, but I'm glad we got Lee and Dedmon, this 2 bigmen is showing us that we made the right decision in getting them, hopefully they'll fully embrace the system. Imagine a more athletic Tiago and Diaw. like if you agree.

With TD and Robinson was post game and mid range game When TD was in his prime was post and kick (if they pack the paint or double /triple team) then the miles start to catch and manu and Parker took more responsabilities and begin drive and kick and more pick and rolls and pops but with TD still as a post creator but not as much Then manu and TD start slowing and pop decides to give the key to Tony after the euro and become the pick and roll with multiple kicks and screens and off ball actions like europlay And now kawhi iso and aldrige post kick With lil off ball movement and picks
