Spruce vs. Cedar top classical guitar comparison - Viktor Fogas lattice concert guitars

Музыка

Spruce vs. Cedar top lattice bracing classical guitar comparison. For more info on these guitars visit: www.guitarras-fogas.com
Hungarian guitarist Zoltán Draskóczy plays Bach BWV 1000 Fugue.
Recorded at Dohnányi Ernő Music School, Budapest, January 2017, while test playing a pair of new Viktor Fogas lattice bracing guitars.
Both guitars are made by Viktor Fogas Hungarian luthier, and bear almost the same tonal characteristics. However, some typical differences can be heard:
SPRUCE: brighter sound, more attack, excellent balance
CEDAR: warmer and darker tone, rounder trebles, basses like ocean...

    I've owned both. Gotta hear them live, Cedar warmer, fuller, more subtle overtones and pleasing tone that can't be heard through very well through speaker or headphones. Spruce is clear, articulate but more 1 dimensional tone is a little harder on the ears and a llitte boring In my opinion especially when played side by side LIVE. Live listening is best.

El abeto separa mejor cada nota y el cedro las funde como en un acorde Definitivamente los bajos son más potentes en el cedro. Recordar que el abeto mejora su calidad con el tiempo y el cedro la empeora

    If you are buying relatively cheap classical (solid top) then I think spruce will be a good choice. I thought I would like cedar more, I've had 2 spruce tops and I always listened some expensive cedar guitars videos ans was blown away with their mellow and beautiful sound. But then I went to buy a cedar top (around 300-600€ )and found that most of them sounded pretty dull compared to their spruce versions. I honestly thought I liked cedar much more but maybe their qualities shine better with more expensive models. And If you play other genres than classical I think spruce is more suitable for that. Just my thoughts...

  • @theomnetwork3898

    @theomnetwork3898

    In that price range, you would not be getting a concert-quality instrument, let alone a high-end student model. These are factory guitars so they are not going to sound all that great, and spruce will appear to sound better in that price range because there will be more clarity in sound. When you go to a higher end instrument, the sound will improve greatly. Also keep in mind, if you are used to playing spruce top guitars, you may have to adjust your technique a little with a cedar top to shape your tone. I too purchased a cedar top years ago for around the price range you mentioned and ended up selling it cause I also found it too dull sounding. If you get a chance to play some high end cedar top classical guitars, you will be blown away with the sound.

    I'm sure someone in the history of the world has built an all cedar guitar. But you're not going to find one on a store shelf somewhere and just because it "can" be done, doesn't mean it "should" be done!. Cedar is just too soft of a wood to make a good neck or sides. No factory or luthier is going to build an instrument like that for sale. If you want a light/blonde colored guitar, you can buy a flamenco guitar using traditional cypress sides. I've seen a few guitars with maple bodies, and although heavy, those are nice looking, too.

    In other words, cedar sounds muddy and hides mistakes and spruce is clear, crisp, and unforgiving. For complex jazz chords spruce is better. But also, spruce has the sweet and sour sound, or, as I call it in the case of Steinway piano - a guitar-like sound. Cedar sounds warmer and richer. Spruce is sweet and singing. To a certain degree, it is possible to improve the cedar trebles and spruce basses by choosing appropriate strings. In conclusion: it is better to have both guitars, but if I were limited to just one - I would choose spruce.
