Springbok Rugby - The Greatest Ever Full Backs

Спорт

The Real Rugby Facebook page held a poll recently for fans to vote for their top five Springbok Full Backs of all time. Obviously, these types of lists are always subjective and will cause heated debate, so think about it this way, the order doesn't matter. All five players were legends in their own right, so just sit back and enjoy the footage!
The top five Springbok full backs, as voted by the Real Rugby fans are: H.O. De Villiers, Gysie Pienaar, Johan Heunis, Percy Montgomery and Andre Joubert.
Enjoy, and thanks for watching!

I met Andre Joubert in the army in 1989. All the top Free State players went to School of Armour so they vould continue playing rugby. Andre was a genuine oke, a gentleman who never pulled rank on a lowly trooper like myself, but would sit a talk to you, man to man. Most lieutenants wouldn't do that. Helgard Muller didn't.

Collectively the best SA backline ever - maybe Mordt wouldn't have gone to Wigan, were SA be allowed to play. Back to fullbacks - Heunis was the man, dangerous runner, strategist, opportunist, defender, kicker, safe under the high ball - he could do everything, and he did it well, in any condition....Naas Botha said he was a great team man as well.

@@catholicrugbyfan1635 , also @Matin Fletcher: Hello sirs, you must be a little older than me if you can recall HO. The first Bok fullback I saw (albeit on black and white TV back in New Zealand) was Ian McCallum. Not necessarily in the class of those shown in the video but his prolific goalkicking played a major part in the defeat of Brian Lochore's 1970 All Blacks, where he kicked 35 of his team's 59 points in the 4 test matches. In particular, the 65 yard penalty goal he landed at Ellis Park was a phenomenal kick.

@@DJ-ct6so Hi DJ, that was one awesome kick by Ian McCallum. Colin Meads said he couldn't believe it when the ball sailed between the uprights. Ian replaced Piet Visagie in that series as place - kicker when he lost form. I will always remember that particular series for one reason. The rubber was all - square after the 2nd Test in Cape Town. The SA selectors took the extraordinary step of recalling "Lofty Nel" as no 8, at 36 yrs old. This prevented my favourite Springbok captain ( Tommy Bedford) from ever playing a Test against the All-Blacks...they say there are two kinds of Test players, those who have played Test Rugby, and those who have played against the All-Blacks. Keep safe, Garry. By the way Colin Meads visited my school De La Salle College in 1970 along with Jake Burns. "Pinetree" autographed one of my rugby books.

In the heydays of Northern Transvaal I supported them with passion. At the start of the 1969 season they played a friendly against Province at Newlands - my first visit to Newlands. NTvl were ahead right till the final few minutes. Northerns failed to find touch and HO countered...He scored in the corner, Newlands went wild and I was a devastated 12 year old. I'm an Andre Joubert fan, but HO gets my nod.

What you see in these videos is all about the attacking play. I have personally watched Joubert and Montgomery - they both were very suspect in defense. Percy was always worried that his hair style would be ruffled while I witnessed Joubert not take a high ball because he was worried about an oncoming player. I never got to see HO De Villiers but my favourite was Gysie Pienaar.

+kirk gainsford Hi Kirk. I actually agree with you. We did the voting thing on our Facebook page to get everyone's opinion. It's no official list and we are no supreme rugby authority, we look at it more like a celebration of great players, irrespective of where they rank. But we listened to the people... In my opinion, and my dad's, HO is no 1 without a doubt. What we realized is that recent players are fresher in people's memories and if you are not a real rugby fanatic, players like HO are not top of mind. With that, we have stopped the public voting on these lists, as even I don't agree with them. Instead, I have setup a panel with two people I know knows their rugby, my brother and my old man. Again, it's just our opinion, but we'd like to think we know a bit about the game ;-) Thanks for your support and any feedback is always welcome!
