During the summer, our Seminole pumpkins provided a LOT of ground cover .. but now that they are done, we need to get some fresh roots in the ground, There are several plants to pick for the job .. and some are quite tasty!.

I bet even the cat can garden. ☺️. You definitely grow impressive radishes. Wow. Thanks for the video.

"Everything Gardens" just might be the most famous permaculture quote .. the kitties are our anti-rodent critter: Either we have cats, or we have snakes .. and if a cat decides to curl up around my feet at night, that doesn't bother me as much as the alternative. 😁

Wow, that Radish is HUGEMONGUSLY LARGE!😂Is that the variety known as Daikon radish? If it is, the ones I've on sale at local supermarkets don't even compare, thanks for sharing this glimpse of your winter garden Jason and Mary,🤣@you Jason imitating the ducks and this large, beautiful radish that Mary held up for us to see and enjoy, reminded me that many years ago, here in Mexico, along with the small, round radishes, the market stall vendors would sella large, very long red radishes(white on the inside like the small ones),they're still around but not in the same quantity as back in the 70s.😊👍

Yes, those are Daikon radishes .. Grown for tillage and fertilizer, but also very edible .. leaves in salad, root in soup or salad either one. The ones that we pull up that are this big get sliced up and dehydrated, then ground to powder to add to soups and stews. They are particularly good to grow in places where you _can't_ till .. like around the roots of your fruit and nut trees. You can get the benefits of tillage without disturbing the soil biome .. or your roots!

Happy New Year Jason! This is my new channel. I will still have my Hardnack Farms. However, I might be able to grow this channel to get monetized? I am trying to add all of my friends. It will take time! Praying for an abundant growing season! I am rebuilding raised beds so no cover crops this season. But this year for sure. I am still restoring our farm it will take time. I have a ways to go. Jujube trees oh how nice. I so want some for our farm. After a wildfire the ecosystem takes a long time to be restored. I am trying. I am trying to get ready for this next growing season. I have chickens now so they will help, but I can’t free range them. I have to get a chicken tractor. lol ducks are ornery. Impressive radish. Looks amazing. Wendy🙏🏻🇺🇸

Most of those radishes are staying in the ground, so they can enrich the soil. I'm thinking on what might be best for recovering from a wildfire .. I imagine there are some things that could be planted to hurry the recovery along, too (hey, great research opportunities!)

I have seen some cold season cover crops that used mustard and kale. Would they work for you, even as part of your mix, or would they be (or not be) useful as winter forage for either humans or ducks?

For what it’s worth, the maypop seeds are in the mail.

Kale would have been great, if I had gotten it started about 2-3 weeks earlier .. it grows well into the winter, but 55 days is a stretch .. and we will be into the hard freezes within that time. We got a LOT of cabbage and kale seed for next year, though. Short season stuff like radish and pak choy in the places where we had pumpkins - those had to go all the way until the end of Fall with their long growing time. All of the space where the harvest happens earlier are great candidates for Kale and cabbage .. and who knows how many more good local annual and perennial veggies there are out there that can fill those niches .. Look for what is green and growing into the winter near you!

Don't you have to scratch them in or till at 12"? Otherwise your spreading seed on concrete. Always a cynic in the audience. haha or waaah waaah. laughing duck!

We scratched them in .. We planted daikons in there before the pumpkins took over, so the soil is loosened up nicely.
