November, November .. time to dig up those lovely cannas .. and why not throw a few in the pot, while we're at it? This week's Hearty Harvest Soup is made with about 2 1/2 lbs of pumpkin, 1 lb of bacon, a lb of onion, and another 1/1/2 lb of canna root, peeled .. seasoned with celery salt, black pepper, and garlic!

The flowers are always good in your salad bowl .. but not all cannas make big rhizomes. If you're fortunate, yours will 😊
Are all varieties of Cana edible? Great vid. Thanks.👍

All members of the Cannaceae genus are edible .. but as many varieties were grown for their ornamental flowers instead of their large edible rhizomes, many of the ornamental varieties don't have enough in them to justify the effort .. unless that's all you have!
Thanks Jason. Can you fry canna like potatoes? If so could you do a video on the process? Much Love ❤

They can be fried, and Mary likes them that way .. slice _very_ thin before frying, as the oil won't penetrate like it does a potato .. a bit like home fries..

Thank You. I'll have to try them that way when I harvest some of mine. Much Love ❤@@Green.Country.Agroforestry
Good advice for cannas. Do you have any recommendations for dahlias, especially for edible roots?

Not yet .. I'm waiting a couple years before i begin eating these roots .. Holland is notorious for using pesticides, and I want to wait a generation or two of growing clean soil before eating them, just to be safe.
HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT VARIETY OF CANNA TO PLANT FOR EATING ? And thank you for the great video !! 😊

Old fashioned varieties - plain Achira, 'Indian shot' canna, canna indica and the canna indica x Purpurea that I have ( I have a few of the plain achira too, not as many) all make good sized rhizomes. We experiment with different varieties, just in case - when I find one, I add it to the list. The flowers of all cannaceae are edible, even if the rhizomes are too dinky to mess with .. and that is what I planted them for initially. If I hadn't been fortunate to get some canna indica in the assorted roots I started with, I would still be treating them like any other edible flower .. sprinkle a few here and there, mix them up, and never plant lettuces again.
