Spring Garden Cleanup: Pruning Perennials

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It’s time for the Spring garden cleanup! In this video, I’m pruning perennials for the Spring and Summer seasons. I prune ten different perennials, each with specific cleanup needs, to show you how easy it is to tidy up your own perennials! I’ll remove dead stems left in place during Winter to protect the plants, and tidy up other perennials that don’t need much cleanup at all.
Important note: When pruning different plants in one session, make sure to clean and disinfect your hand pruners in between plants. I dip my hand pruners into a mason jar filled with Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol), then wipe the pruners dry. Be careful of the fumes, and keep the isopropyl alcohol away from children and pets.

Relaxing video with lots of great info, Laura. I think I'm 4-6 weeks ahead of you here in northern California. It's fun to see the plants we have in common! I grow the Totally Tangerine Geum, too, as well as the Verbena Bonariensis and the Geranium Rozanne. 😎

Thank you Kim! ❤️ I love reading where everyone is "at" in their Spring gardens -- some are behind me and some are ahead like you! Yes, I love that we have several in common -- and great ones too! I love that the Totally Tangerine and the Rozanne are sterile plants, and then just bloom non-stop for a long time. Now I'm always looking to see if a plant resource mentions that a plant is a sterile variety, hoping to get more bloom time from them! 😀

Awwww.... 😊 thank you Chris! I insist that lots of Daffodils not only look beautiful but also camouflage anything else that might still look a bit worn out from the Winter season! You're not far behind, which is great! Do you have any Spring bulbs coming up?

Any casualties over the winter? My Olga Mezitt rhododendron was looking sad last year and is definitely dead. Some critter dug up my new hellebores and left them lying on the ground (jerk). I’m hopeful they’ll be ok, though.

Nothing major, Will. There are a few Kramer's Winter Heaths that I had transplanted last year -- and I already knew they HATE to be transplanted. But they weren't doing well, and now they continue to look horrible. So...I think they might get the boot. I'm sorry about your Olga Mezitt. 😟 One year, we wanted to plant an entire long row of rhododendrons, along part of our backyard fence area. Landscapers were doing cleanup for me that year, since I was recovering from double hip replacement surgery. We asked them to install them. ALL of them died. ALL of them weren't planted correctly and drowned. It was awful. Yes we got our money back, but my heart is still partly broken over that massacre. As for the Hellebores -- that's crazy as usually the scent repels critters. 🤔
