Spreading Lime On Food Plots To Correct PH Levels

Food plot season is here! In order to have the best food plots this fall your plants need to have access to the available minerals / nutrients within the soil. Just because nutrients are in the ground, that doesn't mean the plants within your food plot can absorb them. Different minerals are available at different PH levels. Fortunately for us food plotters, most of what we are planting for deer prefer the PH to be anywhere from 6.0 - 7.5. Achieving a neutral PH will allow the crops to absorb essential nutrients from the soil. If your PH is too low or too high, your crops will be unable to really thrive and in some cases might not grow at all. While there are times in which the soils PH is too high, or alkaline, most of us are working with ground that is acidic, or has a lower PH. In order to amend the soil and raise the PH, an application of lime is needed. In this video we talk about different types of lime, how to apply the lime and when the best time to put down the lime is.

Thanks! That's one of the clover trails that wraps around the side of our property. It's fun to walk during the offseason but it's also a great place to hunt because the deer use it to get around the property. If you wanted to install one the biggest thing is to get sunlight to the ground. Clover is shade tolerant but if you want it to thrive it needs a decent amount of sunlight.

Thank you! My first few plots failed miserably because I failed to pay attention to the soil.. Hopefully a few people can learn from my mistakes!

I like how you explained all types of lime, where to get it, how to apply, etc. Some videos I’ve seen, the speaker assumes some things and miss sharing info. that may not be obvious to a person just starting those process! Yours covered all things really well!!

I'm going to be doing some plots for the first time in August 2022, when would be the best time to spread pellet lime?

Anytime. I usually get 400lb of pelletized and spread it when I can. Before a rain , snow, frost. Lime is easy. I would start soon.

I like to spread lime as soon as I can I get back to my plots. If you're carrying bags you could do it right after the season. If you're using a vehicle you need to wait until you can get back to your plots, not worth getting stuck, but the sooner the better as it takes lime a while to react with the soil and amend the PH.

You should be good on lime for this year but always follow your soil test recommendations. Hopefully you stay around 7 but eventually the PH might dip down in the future. A quick soil test once a year will let you know if you need to add any lime in the spring or not.

Thanks man! I try to keep him involved whenever I can. He LOVES to help but unfortunately a lot of what we do isn’t safe for him to be around.. but fixing the soil, maintaining food plots and deer trails are right up his alley!
