Spray sprinklers to MP Rotator retrofit: Convert your standard sprinklers to efficient MP Rotators

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There is no better time to retrofit your existing sprinklers from inefficient sprays to the highly efficient MP Rotators. MP Rotators apply water using heavy droplet streams at a matched precipitation rate - this means water is optimally applied at a rate that your soil can best absorb. This video explains how to upgrade your system so that you can replace your sprays and use Hunter's MP Rotators, saving you water and money.

    I have been using these Hunter MP Rotator sprinkler heads for years now. They work great, and they are very reliable and easy to adjust. Not to mention the water they save by not allowing it to blow/evaporate in the wind or run down the sidewalk. I have tried the MP Rotators with pressure regulated sprinkler bodies, and with pressure regulators at the valves, in the past, and they work fine. However, I have found that the MP Rotators work just as well, or better, at full line water pressure (80 psi), and just control the actual water flow/pressure at the sprinkler valve with the adjustment screw. All of the sprinklers get equal pressure and I have had no issues running this way, with many of the MP Rotators running for many years now like this. Just my two cents on the subject.

    I am currently in the process of replacing my spray nozzles because we live in an area that gets windy. I was considering multi-stream rotator type nozzles but the problem is they put down water way too slow. We have a pretty large lot with 11 grass zones and 4 drip zones. It would take half a day to get all this watered. It would be really nice if someone made a high output multi-stream that I could just screw onto each nozzle.

    That's the point of the MP800 which puts out .8 in./hr as opposed to the standard MP's which put out .4 in./hr . However, standard spray nozzles usually put out 1.6 in./hr so the MP800 will still require twice as much time as spray heads. If you have too much pressure on some/all of your current sprays, that will cause them to mist excessively which makes the wind problem worse. If so, you should try installing pressure regulating bodies for your sprinkler heads or getting a pressure regulator for the valve as shown in the video. This will improve your wind issue even if you keep your spray nozzles.

    I’m not totally convinced on these nozzles yet. Seems if I have heads that are misting I can just drop the pressure and if I’m at too high of a precipitation rate for soil conditions I can just do multiple soaking cycles.

  • @Hunter_Industries

    @Hunter_Industries

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, if spray nozzles are misting, you can reduce pressure, and if runoff is an issue, cycle and soak from the controller is a great solution. MP Rotator Nozzles are also an easy solution to misting and runoff, and they provide other benefits as well. With the low precipitation rate, more MPs can go on one zone than sprays, and they make for a good retrofit solution if available pressure has dropped too low with sprays. MPs also have higher uniformity with matched precipitation from 5 ft wide side strips up to a 35 ft radius which makes for simple system designs. MP Rotator Nozzles are an all-around solution to many irrigation system concerns.

    Why would my MP’s not rotate that fast? I have some that barley move while others that move at a nice pace, and only 3 per line. Is there a way to adjust the rotation?

    Faster rotation indicates high pressure at the beginning of the circuit and diminished pressure toward the end. I had the same problem when I had my first system installed. I went back and replaced all of the sprayer bodies with regulated bodies (40 psi) and then they all would spin at the same steady rate. Your other problem may be dirt and debris in the line. Pull the nozzle off and check/clean the filters on the ones that are spinning slowly.

    How do these jets get full coverage? For example if you set to spray out 10 feet distance... then how does it cover all of the area of the grass from zero to ten feet? Does each individual stream throw a difference distance to cover all of the area as it rotates? Thanks for the help.

  • @Hunter_Industries

    @Hunter_Industries

    Head-to-head coverage is necessary regardless of the sprinkler type that you are using but is especially true for the MP Rotators. MP Rotators have a lower application rate and a well-designed system is critical to eliminate dry spots near the heads. This spacing will allow sprinklers to overlap their throw to assure even water distribution.

    With the Hunter MP gauge I tested it with a rotator nozzle at the top and got 30 PSI. Then I put a Hunter nozzle cap on the top of the Tee instead and got 40PSI. So 40PSI is if the gauge gets all the water flow pressure and 30PSI is if the gauge shares the water flow pressure with the rotator nozzle. Which is what my nozzle would get if the gauge wasn’t there, 30Psi or 40psi?

    There are several ways to stop the flow to a spray head. The Pro-Spray Shutoff Cap 213600SP caps off the head by replacing the cap, while the Shutoff Nozzle 916400SP doesn't allow flow through the nozzle. Another option is to dig up the head and plug the outlet below grade.

    I recently moved to a home that has Hunter, 10 zones. Each zone has 3-4 older heads, which I'm replacing. Do these zones, now after these low flow rotators, have to spray zone-by-zone or can they all be used at once, or maybe grouped together on the timer to make 2 or 4 spray zones? I also bought various colored lawn flags from Amazon and at first, I'll color code each zone and note the zone # by writing on the flag and making a map. I'll also measure between heads to choose the best rotator. I had read somewhere that each head spray should reach the nearest heads, so I'll adjust each one until it hits the nearest flags. Funny part is one sprinkler currently between homes and wooden fences sprays 360 degrees, but there's not much space between the fences. Maybe 8 feet. So that one sprays my lawn, up my fence, to the other part of lawn and theirs, and then up their fence into thei back yard lol. I laughed hard the first time I saw that.

    Hi Robert, In a residential irrigation system, the amount of water available in GPM (gallons per minute) determines how many heads can be watered in a single zone. For that reason, the residential controller is designed so that it can only water 1 zone at a time. It won't be possible to group the zones together from the controller to bypass that condition.

    I had MP1000's installed at a house in Arizona that I no longer own. Year round watering for summer and winter grass. And Arizona has notoriously hard water that destroys water heaters, dishwashers, shut off valves, etc. I had the local landscaping guy constantly stopping in his truck when I was working in my front yard. He said over and over that I needed to replace the nozzles with brass sprayers for reliability. Not one nozzle failed in over two years. I had to replace two assemblies (riser and body) when the city ripped out part of my irrigation system with a backhoe while fixing a water main break. I was able to reuse the nozzles. Very easy to do, very easy to get the system back up and running. 3 zones running on Hunter Node controllers. Very reliable on just one 9v battery each year, but GAAAAWWWD are those things a headache to program. Not intuitive at all. And pretty expensive. Now that I live in Colorado, my house here has Rain Bird impact sprinklers. In one summer, 4 of the 14 have failed in one manner or another. Just ordered 14 PRS40 MP2000 bundles. Can't wait to get rid of these awful impact sprinklers.
