    Love your work! I am 65 and in 1963 a hobby shop opened next to our school, As a 8 year old kid this was OH YEAH! I walked in there and the first thing you saw was a huge 1/24 scale racetrack, Had to have been about 50 ft. long. x a good 6 ft. wide. No scenery, Just the track on plywood. well the store was new and the owner had all intentions on making the track nice, But it never happened, I remember watching some older kids race, and then 3 months later our family moved about 13 miles away, I was at a different school, and never saw that store again, Then I learned that store went under in about a year. What a shame, But that store is what sparked my interest in slot cars. Now I have More RC toys then my wife cares for me to have and I have a AFX HO set That I still enjoy, Just no room to do all your scenery things, Your track is really cool though, Would love to have a track like that!

    Thank you Len, that’s a great story. I always remember when I was growing up all the different hobby shops with a big old track... they always held my attention, and my mind would daydream on what it would be like to own a track like that.. fast forward 40 years and here I am living out a boyhood dream of having a big old track.... the great thing is , while I’m playing with my track and cars , it takes me back to that little 8 year old kid that is still a big part of my life.... I guess I’ll never grow up.... lol

    Great videos! I plan to make my track runoffs with foam board to keep everything light. On my model RR for some areas where I need to access underneath at times, I crumpled aluminum foil, painted it gray, dry brushed highlights, and it made for extremely fast, light and convenient rocks outcroppings! @@BoonesSlotCarGarage You're so good at this, I was literally looking at one of your other videos and saw these rocks and things and really wondered how you'd done it. I've bought a load of track and a couple of cars and I'm currently trying to get it all working. Any tips for cleaning the tracks as I think I'm losing connection, I think some of it is the brushes on the cars but there's definitely some issue with the tracks too.

    @@trevatkin4869 thanks Trev , there are a few things you can do , but first off I need to know what brand of track you have . It will determine the steps needed. Certain brands of track have a little bit of a difference on how you can improve the conductivity

    @@BoonesSlotCarGarage Hi Boone, thanks for this reply, mine is the really old style track, the one that fits together with 4 plastic tabs with circular ends on if you see what I mean, two tabs from each piece to join them together. Does that make sense?

  • @BoonesSlotCarGarage

    @BoonesSlotCarGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    @@trevatkin4869 yes that helps . Sounds like you have Scalextric Classic track. So Scalextric uses a nickel plated rail. Only issue is that being plated and not stainless like Carrara it tend to corrode / rust and also tarnish. This can cause an issue with electrical current moving freely through the track. So first off inspect your track. Look for discoloration of the rails, now since it is plated ( and a very thin layer, electroplated ) try to clean by using the least amount of abrasive as you can . I like using Inox MX3 it has a secret ingredient “ lanolin “ which helps it from evaporating fast and leaves a nice light oil on the surface to protect it from corrosion. You can also use lighter fluid or Naphtha. Apply this with a nice clean rag and buff the rails , it should clean them up pretty good. Sometimes it might take using ultra fine steel wool or ultra fine sand paper to clean the surface, but try to avoid this if possible. Why I say this is if you scratch through the plating it will tarnish and rust much easier. So this takes care of the surface of the track , but it doesn’t address the actual connection between the tracks . Now you need to flip the track over and inspect the rail tabs . Scalextric track was designed for the abuse that kids tend to inflict on slot car tracks . The track is constructed with a softer plastic that could be stepped on when on the floor and the tabs were made to be connected and disconnected many times with ease. The weakness is in the metal tabs , male pins and female sockets. Over time they loose the tight fit. So… look at the female side, over time this area will spread some and loose the tight fit needed. ( I really need to do a little video on this, 😂.. kinda hard to describe what to do but I will give it a go) … if you take a flat head screwdriver you can press down the sides of the socket where it mounts to the track. This will help tighten up the connection. Also… use a small needle nose pliers to lightly tighten up the socket as well. Best way is to connect two pieces of track together to do this . It helps from collapsing the socket it the tracks are joined. But it can be done separated as well. Just take some care and you should be okay. Once this is done clean the tabs , male and female. This should help. Put you track back together and try running a car. Remember that slot car tracks run DC current, so your juice is going one way. So if you run a car and it has a drop in performance at a certain spot , you know that joint is having problems . Just fallow these steps and see if it corrects the issue. If it still doesn’t help after doing this , a jumper cable might be the answer. A jumper will connect the rails together with a small insulated wire and bypass the track contact pins. So here is this part on the track , hope it helps. Now for your question about the braids. The braids can wear over time , and need replacement. Scalextric braids wear out fast and need replacement. They use a light aluminum braid and it just doesn’t last too long. But if your braids look good but seem to be covered in muck 😂… use a toothbrush and comb the braid . Do not go against the direction of the strands, this will destroy the braid . Brush one direction with the braid and this should clean them up. You can use a light oil to help clean them in conjunction with the toothbrush. Works pretty well. Also check the connection to the braid wire. Make sure it hasn’t pulled out or come loose. There are a few braid oils in the market. They do help , but they also make the braids sticky and tend to clog the braids up quickly if the rails of your track are not clean. So give this a go and see what happens. Hope it works out well for you… thanks again and thank you for watching my videos

    I'd really love to see the track in action Boone once you're done with the layout! I'm running Carrera but I know from watching 100's of videos that a majority of the Euro tracks are Carrera based and not too many Scalextrics or Ninco, "the Phantom slot track company"! I'm sure their fan base is mostly a Spanish since it is based in Barcelona, Spain which BTW is a Beautiful city. Anyway, this layout is Awesome and would just like to see ya' do a couple of laps!

    Thanks Edward, I have a couple corners that I have done this on the layout. I first created the corner that I wanted and supported the track with wedges to get the banking that I was going after. Once happy with the look and the support that the track needed , I then used poly styrene high density board and shaped the outer corner to create a grove that the track would lock into to hold it into place. Once that was secure I was able to proceed with the remaining berm . If you wanted to have edging on the outside I would use a thin MDF board cut in the shape of the corner to allow the track to rest on with enough room on the outer shape to have enough room for a track edging piece cut to fit so the cars can slide around the corner. I’m sure there are other ways this all can be done as well. A lot of times you can have an idea of how you are going to do it , but once you start the project some of the plans change to adapt to your specific situation. Hope this is of some help and thank you again Boone

    I have a few airbrush guns . Unfortunately or fortunately 😂 I have been working with an airbrush for years , especially when I was painting custom car and bike paint jobs for customers. An airbrush works great for shading and doing the finer details on scenery.I haven’t shown this type of technique before on my videos mainly because not everyone has an airbrush. And the results are pretty good with the simple brush techniques . But you are correct. And I should do a video on airbrush techniques for scenery. Well I have quite a few places now on the layout that need a lot of love 😂. So I will definitely get an airbrush video in the mix. Thanks for popping the question Todd . Maybe it’s time I just do it 😂
