Spotted Turtle Care

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Anthony, of theTurtleRoom.com, shares methods in care that he employs for his group of Spotted Turtles (Clemmys guttata). He discusses important factors like clean water with low ph to protect against common ailments like fungal infections. Check out theturtleroom.com for more on this and other exciting chelonian species.
The Spotted Turtle (Clemmys guttata) is a small species that is immediately discernible due to its carapace, which is black with scattered yellow dots. These dots are actually windows in their pigmentation which allows the yellow color underneath to show through. Some individuals may have little or no spots, while hatchlings and young juveniles generally have one spot per scute. Spotted Turtles are native to Ontario and Quebec in Canada, as well as Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virgina in the United States. Populations of Spotted Turtles are very localized and several populations have been documented as being in decline. They prefer mostly small, live food items. Spotted Turtles inhabit various types of wetlands, including swamps, bogs, vernal pools, small streams, and wet meadows and forests. A maximum length of 14.3 cm is reached, with females having a less concave plastron and therefore greater mass than males of the same length. Male Spotted Turtles have tan chins, brown eyes, and long thick tails, while females have yellow chins, orange eyes, and a tail shorter than that of males.
Spotted Turtles (Clemmys guttata) is listed on the IUCN Red List as Endangered, due mostly to road mortality and collection for the pet trade. With an estimated generation time of more than 25 years, Spotted Turtles (Clemmys guttta) have likely suffered a more than 50% decline, much of which due to habitat loss and therefor irreversible. Collection for the pet trade has no doubt contributed greatly to their drop in numbers as well. The Spotted Turtle is protected in most of the states where it naturally occurs.

Ah. Okay good to see you're watching the state laws and educating yourself. My fear is that people who post care videos of endangered animals like the spotted or wood turtle, normalize it. This in turn encourages other turtle keepers to "rescue" wild turtles and take them home as pets. In areas where they are actually threatened. Here in Canada, keeping any native turtle is illegal. Most of our native species are threatened because of poaching from the pet trade.

hanzifaction the truth is that most animals are endangered because of habit destruction, so regardless of your fear these animals are still going to go extinct in the wild, and captive breeding is one of the few plausible ways we might actually save these animals, like the axolotl which no longer exists in the wild but can be fond in any pet store for sale for 30 dollars. The spotted turtle is so endangered it is almost impossible to find one in the wild so which person would spend hours and days in swampy marsh lands searching for a animal that they can buy for 250 dollars online.

Turtles don’t hunt turkeys in the wild. It doesn’t matter if it’s lean or not. In captivity we want to replicate there natural environment as much as possible… and insects, crustaceans, fish, frogs, tadpoles aquatic plants
