@@liamwithaspace KZread Music also pays by the stream, it's more than Spotify, at .008 cents per stream, but it's still laughable. and it also gets complicated. I can actually upload my music videos to Apple Music directly and be compensated for it, whereas on KZread I have to be in the creators program (which requires 3k+ watch hours/1 Year) in order to monetize.

@@liamwithaspace youtube music is wayyy better than spotify. I don't know about Apple music because I use an android (S24). But if I used an iPhone, I will definitely try out Apple music. KZread music's catalogue is more expansive than spotify's. You can find anything there. My music preference was in limbo state for a while, till I started using ytmusic. I've discovered so many artists there. So you can try out ytmusic free plan. (better than spotify's. Cancelled my membership a week ago. And the reason I told them was due to their mistreatment of smaller artists. Paying them like an eigth of a penny per stream is pretty gross. We are practically one tick above piracy at that rate. Except its worse in a way because we're paying the people directly responsible for taking money from artist's pockets. I use the free version of Pandora and Spotify and honestly it is rare that Spotify is even my preferred streaming service. The amount of ads these services run should be more than enough to pay out on the music and continue to invest in infrastructure. Those who pay for the service are a bonus to the service. If they can't manage the funds correctly then maybe the service deserves to die, you should live and die on the decisions you make for your business that is the risk you accept when you start a business.

I make music and lots of people have asked me about putting it on Spotify and everytime they ask me I say I will but I secretly just don't want to do it. I'm a musician myself & I understand the frustration. But I'm also in IT. My guess is that one of the main reasons for the price increase is the infrastructure it needs to store data. Yes to this. I’m an artist and I mix and master my own songs and it’s so frustrating how much the quality is lost on Spotify. Soundcloud and Apple Music support much higher quality and CDs can have the top quality possible if you rip the HD WAVs. I am getting an old ipod or mp3 player and doing this from now on too. I’m so fed up of these big companies stealing from artists and customers and bad quality music and adverts. I just want my money to go to the artists directly! Not to a huge company so they can just not pay the artists I wanna support 😂

Love that you made this video. There really needs to be more discussion about the place these apps and devices have in our lives. You can't beat the convenience of smartphones and subscription services, but just because one singular app/device can 'do everything' doesn't necessarily mean that it should. One of the major sacrifices you make for ultraconvenience is intentionality and deliberateness. Whether you realize it or not, you will inevitably become less engaged with whatever you're doing when it takes virtually no effort to do. A year ago I cancelled Spotify, bought a refurbished ipod, and rebuilt my MP3 collection. It wasn't until then that I realized just how much damage that app had done to the way I consumed music. I had almost entirely forgotten about some of the niche indie artists I used to love simply because their careers in music ended before Spotify launched and nobody was advocating to get them on the platform. I wasn't following my favorite bands for new releases because I was relying on Spotify to notify me of new drops. I wasn't making playlists because I was relying on their curated daily mixes. I wasn't listening to full albums or even 99% songs I had saved because I was just living in my Recently Added tab. Shit is completely different now. I fell back in love with so much of my old catalogue just through the process of this project. So if you're subscribed to Spotify Premium and on the fence about going back to MP3's (or even thinking about collecting them for the first time), I won't tell you what the best choice is for your situation, but I do want you to ask yourself this: Is Spotify actually providing you with tools to cultivate your passion for music? Or are you paying a company for the convenience of being able to think less about how you access and engage with art that you love?

I like to buy CDs of my favorite artists so I will always have them, and as a sort of collection. Listening on a dedicated device can have some nice advantages, my Main iPod has 1TB of SSD storage and the battery lasts over a month. When was the last time you listened to music on your phone, then found yourself scrolling an app, then watching a video? With a dedicated device you can focus on your music, really enjoy it, with no distractions or notifications interrupting it.

Yeah its convinient but I've been listening to the same music most of the time, and most of the new music I've discovered has been through KZread videos and rarely through Spotify. Since then, I've been on the hunt for an iPod to modify its storage, and cds from artists I mostly listen to. Awesome video, man. You bring up really good points. I didn't even know about how Spotify fucked over its customers with the car thing. That's really bad business practice.

Great video bro! Another layer of insight I’d like to add: As a musician, discovering new music is part of the passion. There’s no better high then when I find a new song I love, or even better, an album full of bangers. The issue is, the music industry is so saturated with people trying to chart that people rarely make real albums anymore. Like, an album is a body of work. It needs a concept, a sonic image, a story. It doesn’t even have to be serious. I can appreciate an album with songs that “aren’t good enough for the chart” but put me in the artist world from start to finish. I don’t feel like going out of my way to buy an album from artist where only the singles hit and the rest is just fluff. Every single song being designed to chart makes a lot of artist work really monotonous and hard to listen to. The disappointment is immeasurable when I go on Apple Music, save an album to listen to, and the whole thing is just…. Meh. I’d be pissed if I spent money on that lol. Whether it’s a small or large artist, I hope that people refocusing on actual artistry will motivate people to buy more physical copies. Until then, I don’t really see the point.

i think as a person who makes music, streaming is terrible for discovery but it’s great for commitment. like none of my friends truly expect for us to get selected for a spotify playlist, that application is for midsized artists, but if i put my music in front of someone, i don’t have to push them to buy it. i personally hate and don’t use spotify, my streamer pays artists more, but im not dedicated to any of these brands lol. i think there needs to be more pressure on all of these companies to pay artists more, bcos this price uptick for spotify isn’t going to musicians at all, it’s to add their audiobooks (and pay those people terribly too lmao). if major musicians went on strike/protests for streaming to pay more i think we’d see real progress

Apps like spotify and pandora have better audio quality. KZread is pretty flat in comparison and as someone who writes music, i prefer to hear every little sound and all of the depth of the low end.

I myself buy the albums of some artists, they are still relatively cheap around 10€, i think the biggest wall to climb is that nowadays hi-fi systems are rare to find and today cars dont come with cd players anymore, wich sucks, fortunately, there is still radio and thats a way to experience music without spotify (depends on your country, i live in one with nice radio) but yeah that my two cents about this subject

I feel the algorithm doesn't work for me because it goes based on either subgenre or decade and while there are common threads in the music i like they're things like production aspects, vocal harmonies, complex instrumentation and odd time signatures, lyrical themes...in other words things that arent tied to any one style of music

I recently bought a second gen iPod Mini. Used to have a second gen Nano, but I wanted something I could upgrade, so I replaced the hard drive with a 512G SSD, replaced the battery with a larger capacity battery, and I've got my sweet Sony XM5 headphones that can still do wired connection. My plan is to explore albums and genres that I haven't really tapped into before, and stuff I've never really taken the time to appreciate. I'm still paying for my family's Spotify accounts, but recently a SECOND one of my top 10 songs of all time was removed from Spotify, so I'm getting charged more for a worse service. With an iPod and ownership of those songs, that won't happen. If I can move anyone else off it and reduce our streaming (since video streaming services are going through some nice enshitification as well), I would be pretty happy.

I use Apple Music and Spotify. I got Spotify for free due to a fitness plan I’m on so the price doesn’t bother me too much. I like Spotify for the playlists but I agree, as an aspiring artist, that the pay is ridiculous. That’s why I use Apple Music to stream the musician or support them in any way financially when I find an artist I like! I hope everyone who uses Spotify buys the artist’s merch or support them on Patreon as music is a really hard career to put food on your plate!

Best alternative (I currently use): 1. Buy the music (cd, usb giveaway, digital version woth download options) 2. If physical, rip to digital 3. Backup your digital copies (Google drive, drop box, multiple SD cards or hard drives) 4. Upload to KZread Music and enjoy ad free music for free if you listen to your uploads

In spring last year i did use no streaming and only listened to music i had bought. But that locked me into only listening to daft punk and i eventually got 3 months of free apple music but then i just got spotify again cus it lets me just listen to stuff without needing to add to my library or anything

since they upped it to 10.99 I cancelled and decided to buy albums instead which is ironically cheaper and mine for life, I've been buying an album or two per month, been spending the same or close to it, and have my music for life, spotify can eat it
