I think the biggest problem with the opinion of people like Mr. Ek is, it doesn't feel like he's asking, "Why is the Mona Lisa so enduring? Why do so many people look at this painting and feel things?!" It feels like he's asking, "HOW DO WE GET PEOPLE TO CONSUME CONTENT TO THE POINT OF MONA LOSA LEVELS?!". It just is such a horrible way to view the human experience involved in art, music, videos, etc.

Great chat today, Jon(and Sarah!) I have a couple talented musician buddies who have made a living, albeit modest, working as touring musicians for 20+ years. They mainly tour across Canada because the U.S. is a very tough market to break into without Big Label support. Even in the toughest times, I've never heard them lament their choices to pursue music as a career. It's because they LOVE what they do and NEED to express themselves through their art. I chose good salary/benefits, but not a day goes by I'm not playing air guitar and wishing I was jamming on stage; not giving a f*ck.

Thanks Gnog! Touring for 20 years is a huge accomplishment at any level. This industry selects out people harshly and quickly so they must be quite good and reliable. 🤘

This reminds me of the early 20th century before all of the royalty laws came into being when musicians where also exploited and had to produce lots of "content ".

Technology changes the world. During that time prior to widespread recordings lots of bands played "standards". Interesting comparison. 🤔

Maybe people should sue the CEO for scamming the artists by pulling the rug from their feet. 0.004 per stream and now each track each year has to get 1000 streams to qualify for payment. If you sell from your own website you can sell one track for £1 to one person and make more money than those streams accumulate. Make it make sense

If you sell from your own website people have to know you and to go to your website. Discoverability is the name of the game. These less than a thousand artists are trying to get found so they can build their fan base and hopefully one day have enough fans they can sell items from their own website. So unfortunately we have these big central places like Spotify that we use for that because the masses aren't going to use a dozen different platforms.

really good discussion-- I really like how Sarah articulated the fundamental differences between art and content. As you said,100% this is all all a great example of why technocrats shouldn't be in charge of anything!!

Haven't watched the full interview yet, but will, I already know this is about what is reality. Just to keep it short, and food for thought, what you have here is a clash of realities. Probably got some kind of megalomaniac agenda regards Spotify.

Sarah brought up an article about the misaligned incentives that all the disparate players in the industry have. It's crazy. It's not just the execs. The indie venues, the PR, the radio, the road crew, everyone has a different goal and a lot of them if they meet that goal then it means someone can't also meet theirs. 😫

AS a musician I have never support Spotify. I don't even have the app on my phone or laptop. Being a musician and creating music takes time, practice, sacrifice and money. Instruments, equipment, lessons, rehearsal rooms, fuel, food, accommodation, recording studios, recording equipment all costs money and time.

He should practice stoicism by letting artists profit off their creations and not raising his customers' prices.

Mr Ek seems not to understand the difference between overall content and proper art. On one hand he's saying content is basically free to make and on the other hand he's asking "how do we make art that will last for decades or even centuries?"

Perhaps music should be considered free, however labor is not. Any serious musician should look carefully at all the benefits of creation and distribution.

  • @heavymetalphilosophy

It's not an easy solution. You and I could boycott Spotify but that wouldn't unentrench them from their influence on the rest of the industry because the unwashed masses will continue to use it. Trying to convince them to join the boycott is one of the hardest things in the world. It seems much easier to lobby for fairer practices.

We don't need the masses. We need real loyal fans. It may not be easy, but indie artists are starting to realize it, and the streaming services will feel the pressure. Spotify will fail with it's current model and they are panicking. My label is small but growing rapidly, and it's mostly because of bandcamp. there is a way to get paid for art without streaming. Getting legislation will end up hurting artists, not corporations.

But if bands, musicians, and content creators left in droves then he would definitely change his tune. Question is how many bands etc are willing to leave an app ran by an ass hat?
