How much effort was actually put in to prepare this guy for the net? He doesn't look like he has a clue what to do. At the very least, he could have spent some time with an NHL goalie to learn the basics. Every hockey fan has pondered the subject of this video at least once in their life, but this just doesn't answer the question. People want to know what would happen in theory if you took a big guy and gave him the skills to succeed. Though, the answer would still likely be the same, even if a fat goalie had the same reflexes and skills, they just wouldn't be able to move fast enough to be statistically viable. That's disregarding the fact that goalies have strict restrictions of the dimensions of their equipment. There's technically no size restrictions on players, but if they can't fit into regulation equipment, they can't play.

+TheIrishEnigma Actually there is no absolute size limit for goalie equipment, it's relative to the size of the goalie and determined on a case by case basis: "Hockey Ops has the final say as to what is the appropriate maximum sizing for a goalie's chest and arm pads based on each goalie's body type". So if you actually taught a sumo wrestler the basics and custom made him all the correctly sized equipment they would likely approve it for the sake of the safety of the player. In fact, with correctly sized equipment, a sumo wrestler sized player would actually be much bigger than the 70% that is suggested in this video.

While I agree this video is poorly made, I think we disagree on why. This video is just fat-shaming without actually analyzing the techniques it requires to play goalie. Goalie is almost entirely a game of the mind rather than a game of physicality. I've seen some fucking fat goalies who can play better than the little fast guy because they simply understand the way the puck moves better and have a better overall understanding of the geometry of how the puck will move. Speed and all that shit really doesn't matter compared to the mental taxation of being a goalie and understanding the whole team will irrationally hate you the second you let in a "bad goal". Goalies are a mental position far more than a physical one regardless of size or physical agility.

People just don't realize how big hockey goals are and how accurate NHL shooters are. They're four feet high and six feet wide. That's 24 square feet. Nobody could possibly cover that entire space with just size alone. And these guys aren't just throwing it at the net and hoping it goes in. They're aiming for very specific spots and they are frequently on the mark.

The point of the experiment is to show that the reason NHL teams DON'T just get big guys to cover up as much of the ring as possible is because even a player who's not known for his killer shots can still pretty much well hit whatever part of the goal he's aiming at, and that hockey goalies really DO have the toughest job in sports and NEED to be quick rather than just wall-like. I think this experiment made its point. Goalies deserve their respect.

They forgot the most important thing about being a goalie which is anticipation of where the puck is going..... They aren't reacting to when the puck is already traveling towards them half the time but rather watching the shot and estimating where the puck will be going. I miss Parros, it was great to have him as a Hab even if it was only for a little while.

Skylightt Oh wow he won the skills competition in the accuracy event. Did you know Ray Bourque back 98 was the most accurate shooter at the skills competition. When he played for team Canada at the 98 Olympics in Nagano, the coach (Marc Crawford) choose him over Gretzky as the last shooter in the shootout in the Semi Finals and guess what? he shot wide. So my point is, Skills competition is suppose to be fun, not game type moments or actual statistics that mean somthing.

Although it would probably end up being similar results, I could see this being more effective in an actual hockey game. Sure the goalie only takes up 70% of the net, but that's straight on with no defense men. If you consider an actual game where most shots are taken from the side, the angle would increase the goalies coverage of the net. Throw in a defense man or two, and some shots could be close to 100% coverage.

Dude have you ever heard of the crazy concept of PASSING in sports?? The thing people do to make it easy to score? You so very clearly do not watch/know fucking anything about hockey and maybe even sports in general yet you are trying to talk out your ass about it like you do and as a result you're borderline disrespecting people who play the hardest position in the world. If you did watch hockey, youd understand that goalies are athletic and quick for a god damn reason, and that it matters 10000x more than just covering the damn net. Plus, even if a guy did cover the whole net, there's still a million unseen holes for pucks to squeak through, its a person not a literal fucking wall. Holy shit your comment made me mad

It takes years of play to become a good goalie. This guy doesn't even know how to stand. Of course he won't succeed. Take a 17 year old 500lb sumo wrestler and put him on a hockey team. I bet after a few years he would be pretty good if his ankles could handle being on skates.

If 500 pounds was the optimal size for an goalie, then you better believe that NHL goalies would be happy to eat a tub of ice cream every day to get there.

The point was to see if a really big guy can block the net enough, even if he doesn't have the skills. If you train him to be a goalie, then he is of course a goalie, that's kinda obvious.

The summo should take 2 steps off his goal line and he'll effectively be larger. It's a "technique" goalies call "cutting down the angle". It's super scientific and involves "geometry". All TV does suck, doesn't it?

I have played football and soccer. Can't say anything about baseball players and though I have never played hockey as a Canadian living in the east coast I know a LOT about it. Football is not that difficult ( I was a QB) Soccer is a joke no matter what position you play ( I was a keeper and scored often ). Basketball is faster, the play rarely stops and you have to pay attention to what everyone else is doing. Learn your sports man.

Not exactly scientific. They simply needed a machine that fires pucks (tennis balls would probably suffice, since they make machines that do that), and program a sequence of shot locations that could be reproduced with each goalie. Then, in addition to testing a sumo wrestler or obese person in goal, you would test an average person who is the size of a professional goalie to serve as the control, as well as a professional goalie. That would at least allow you to compare the goalies on a shot by shot basis.

  • @DaeLh

Kind of an unappreciated job too. Rarely are the goalies ever made huge superstars like the top scoring players are even though a team winning can very well be decided more by its goalie's ability to keep the other teams shots out than by how many goals it can score

  • @Coorsfrostbrew
    @Coorsfrostbrew11 жыл бұрын

The mentality of goalies is to read the play and react to the shot. Being big is just a perk. I personally love watching the skill of the small goalies. Quick and crazy agile means the big empty net you see vanishes in less than a second.

Maybe at some point during the next 100 to 200 years, we will have the birth of 3 conjoined triplets - 3 heads, 2 arms, 3 legs, joined at the pelvis (at least 3 in the world so far have survived birth) - and the conjoined triplets initially train to become sumo wrestlers and are discovered by an NHL coach and signed on to become the ultimate goalie. Or a boy is born like Lakshmi Tatma of India - born with 4 arms and 4 legs - who becomes a professional hockey goalie. An athletic goalie with 1 head, 4 arms, and 4 legs could be the ultimate goalie more than 3 conjoined triplets with 3 heads, 2 arms, and 3 legs.
