I picked up a pretty cool PC card and it served as a refreshing reminder that the cliche hobby trends pushed by influencers needs to disapear.

    Excellent video and I love the point about collecting what you like and not to listen to anyone telling what you should or shouldn’t buy. But, yes, it’s a shame that a good portion of the hobby doesn’t have that mindset because of the MONEY! Love the video Dan, I hope that its message and point isn’t lost on too many of the viewers.

    I actually haven't collected cards since I was kid in the 80s and 90s(Junk Era) and was thinking about getting back into the hobby as an adult. But listening this guy and a lot of the lame youtube "breakers" has turned me off a little. I'm not looking to pay over 200 for a hobby box just to get a bunch of no-names and people I don't care about. I'm not looking to make money or invest, I just like to collect some cool-looking cards and have fun. Now it looks like it turned into the stock market

    I'd say most people watching the general youtube card market don't care about collecting, rather just making money (or at least trying to). Very easy to manipulate this group of people. At the end of the day none of this stuff are investments, they are pictures of men, printed on cardboard, encased in plastic. Collect what you like in the end not what people shill to you.

    I also collect what I like, not what somebody tells me I should like. I’ve been collecting cards since the 70’s, and a lot of these “influencers” only started 6 or 7 years ago at best. 2 good examples? I find the Bowman Chrome green refractor autos #/99 to be an extraordinary value compared to the blue #/150. I really love RPA’s from Panini’s National Treasures…low numbered on card autos with a real game used patch? I was able to buy Soto, Acuna and Ohtani RPA’s, all three of which were #/10, for $1,100 USD in their rookie year. Could care less if it’s “licensed”.

    Great Video man. Flippers don't like rare or unique cards--they like super common (high Pop) cards that they know they can sell for a certain price, so they can make their 20% profit. They want to be able to sell or flip a card quickly because they aren't collectors. They are in the hobby just to make money. I never understood collectors (SHEEP) that buy high pop garbage, reminds me of every Base rookie Prizm/Topps card that crashed in the past two years.

    My collection goes against the grain of what the popular trends are in the hobby. I don’t own one PSA 10 card as i love PSA 9’s. I don’t own one auto card, as I believe the only autograph that means something is when you get it signed personally. My collection is mostly 80’s/90’s/00’s rookies so i don’t follow the trend with vintage or ultra modern serial cards. I never follow the sheep because what is ‘hot’ today may not be tomorrow.

    A related thing to this. I get why a Rookie Card is a big deal. And while I'm not saying that later cards of a player should get to that level but why is there zero premium on a card for a hot year of a player? Like maybe it's a card of their 3rd MVP season or a card from a year they lead the league in a particular stat. It's weird to me that those are all usually worth the same.

  • @TheVgaTV

    @TheVgaTV

    It's probably a holdover from the early days of cards/comics/etc where the first appearance/rookie card didn't survive in large numbers, and once the character/player became popular, everybody wanted to have a piece of the first one. Now it's all artificial scarcity with literally thousands of different variations of every rookie, which renders pretty much all of them worthless over the long haul. and I can't remember who did the video, but they were showing how the second year cards of certain baseball players (semi-modern, like Trout) were starting to pick up in value because collectors couldn't afford to get the rookie card.

    Wait what? Those weren’t $3,000 ea. I’ve purchased the run so far (1-6) and they’re $18 each. Even at 100k copies that’s still a separate offshoot of his base RCs in other 23-24 products IMO. The Wemby Topps Now cards in particular actually look pretty good with the foil and refractor, and the print runs on. The other ones are significantly less so I would think overtime they would increase pretty good, especially since they were only made in limited runs. Also I don’t really care about “investing” I got them because I like them. Geoff Wilson and his PPE fraud should be in a federal pen. Is his Cards HQ closed yet?
