good for you :)

if you drill smaller holes you could fill the jar with large size bone charcoal around the sponge for added water purity. otherwise line it with plastic window screen or thin sponge sheeting (used for ''filter wrap'') cut to size to contain finer grades of carbon.

maybe u could even take out the sponge and use ceramic hydroponic beads and a sponge on top to make sure it keeps the beads in place. this is giving lots of ideas. thank you. i think those sponges aren't great

Dont you think it will absorb less dirt particles then before just becoz of the holes? Its like decreasing the dirt absorbing surface area. ​@@AOAvina

@@aquariumheaven you only clean the filter when you do a water change so messy water thats not a big issue , its never that dirty anyway when you do regular clean , to me its pointless to put a jar arround it , it wil also restrict the filter survice

i thought he turned a sponge filter into one of those little plastic box filters we used a long time ago that had to be packed with glass wool and charcoal. but i will take the idea further and park the sponge filter inside a short piece of 4'' pvc pipe that i will attach to a UG filter plate by cutting a 4'' hole in the center of the plate and using a small piece of a coupling fitting on either side of the plate to lock it to the plate. the sponge will then act as the air lift to run the UG filter. i hope i can find a reducing fitting to cap the 4'' pipe down to 2'' or less for aesthetic purposes, and maybe keep fish out of it. i can hide the pipe behind rocks or even find a hollow log that fits over it. to clean the filter, just remove the cap and lift it out since it won't be attached to anything. sponges come in diff diameters so you could do this one a smaller scale for small tanks. add a bag of charcoal, etc, under the sponge if you like, but the stuff added will slow the rate of water flow through the UG, which is just what you want to establish anoxic conditions in your gravel. otherwise just cut the air flow down to slow the flow.

Actually it's much better to have your sponge holder enclosed in this jar. Because it helps keep all that debris and junk and dirt inside. Basically adding an entire other dimension to the filter to hold a bunch of extra stuff like mechanically

u can buy the filter at petsmart for about $10 and can pick up the container at most 99c stores, just follow the video instructions 😁

It does the same thing but when u take it out to clean the sponge it keeps the crap on the sponge from messing up the water by keeping the crap inside

More waste of time and resource is it nor is it benefit it ? The main thing is for the sponge to obsorb as much dirt into it and by covering it just by couple of holes make it worse !

not really the dirt is in the water going through the holes and the main objective of a sponge filter is to carry the beneficial bacteria to keep the water balanced more than anything else
