Spoiler alert: suits EXP Ratchet fans riding ebikes. Is that you?

The DT Swiss 240 EXP OS Hybrid hubs are here! They’re a unique hub for a very small subset of riders - is that you?
They use an oversized version of DT Swiss' EXP system, a larger axle, smaller bearings, and a steel freehub body.
Let's pull them apart and see how they stack up

What are your thoughts on 350 hybrid compared to the 240 hybrid. I think the 350 is far better designed that 240 just because the normal ratchet rings, ease of maintenance, and no nonsense proprietary tools. The only minuses i see for 350H is the weight and looser tolerances.

I like the 240 front hub better as the endcap design is nicer. I agree about the rear hub though as not everyone will have the special tool for the EXP OS ~Tristan

Hello. Would these hubs be more reliable for use with non-electric bikes - regular gravel bikes (gravel bikes: bike and сyclist weight - 310 lbs)? The DT 240/350 (not Hybrid) has very thin aluminum axles with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm and there is a possibility that they will break.

Yes, the axles on the OS version are oversized and should be stronger. Having said that, we rarely see broken DT Swiss axles, even with larger riders and ebikes ~Tristan

Are e-bike specific wheels for the extra weight or torque? E-bikes are only 20 more lbs and most riders don’t have pro torque and older hubs work fine for a 220lb pro rider. Or is this all marketing to make money

We see two issues specific to ebikes: 1) The extra torque from the motor and its affect on the hub. ebikes tend to have far more freehub body issues 2) Rim impact damage. This tends to be a result of the heavier bike which sticks to the ground more, and carries more momentum. That means often riders don't/can't lift the rear wheel over impacts and tend to hit rock- and root-gardens harder resulting in rim damage. A good quality acoustic wheel can be used on an ebike, but it needs to be up to the task. ~Tristan

Thanks for the reply. All these things doesn’t seem to apply to most non pro riders.

@@jack91522I disagree with that...we build lots of ebike wheels for people where their original hubs or rims haven't stood up.

@@WheelworksHandcraftedWheels would these be for riders who are very heavy or pro strength riders ?

@jack91522 do you mean this pair of hubs? My take on these is that they'll appeal to DT Swiss fans who love that ratchet system and have had issues with other hubs.
