Splitting Firewood Has Never Been So Easy.
Using my excavator mounted log splitter on some big oak rounds. Splitting this with my old splitter would have taken many hours and wore me out. Now it's easy, fast, and fun. Enjoy the log splitting ASMR. Stick around for an unexpected "surprise."
Feedback welcome. I'm curious to see how this video will be received.

@@kcolombo49 why is she watching daytime talk shows or soap operas they like drama Men like to watch other people do clever stuff to get things done that saves time. There is a crazy guy up in candy Who splits his logs with an axe all day long. I would not piss off Bucking Billy no way.
Not to worry Jon, and don't let anyone make you feel like you need to do more for us. Your splitting wood with your excavator and homemade splitter, and we are still quit content to watch. Just keeping doing what you do and what makes you happy, let us just enjoy it with you.
Jon, I never thought about how time consuming your KZread work is. I think you should know that your videos are extraordinary and important. I look forward to watching them every Friday evening and I've learned a great deal from you. FarmCraft101 is one of the best channels on KZread, and I think there is just the right amount of content. 👍 Thank you, sincerely, for being so generous with your time and your knowledge.
One idea might be to have some short videos that have a "before and after" theme. These could show smaller jobs such as painting something or maybe fixing the destroyed boards on your transport trailer. Taking the trailer example, you could show the damaged trailer (the "before"), the removal of old damaged boards, crafting and install of new boards and the final result (the "after"). These videos wouldn't need much narration other than an intro and close and can be projects of low-complexity. You'd likely want to capture things you were already planning to do so as not to add yet even more work to your busy schedule. By the way, I know firsthand how much work KZread is. What you've been able to achieve so far, through countless hours of KZread work, has been remarkable! Kudos to you and more importantly THANK YOU for the excellent content! 😺
John, I really enjoy your channel. The content is great, just like your sense of humour. I hope that the hours of work you put in is financially rewarding enough from KZread for you to continue. Don't burn yourself out on our account. I appreciate your channel and look forward to each video as and when they appear. Your channel is better than some of the tosh they show on the Discovery channel. Keep up the good work, (hopefully). Thank you from a big fan.
Jon, we can’t watch what you don’t post. The more the better. Not everything needs narrations or editing. Day in the life videos are very entertaining
I watched about 75%. If the split logs had been in the sun so that I could have seen the grain and colors, I would have watched 100%. Thanks for your efforts on the behalf of myself and everyone who enjoys watching you.
Glad you mentioned this channel. I will love watching these videos as well. As far as the editing of your main channel, I wanted to mention that, before you mentioned it, I thought you spent a lot of time on it. Your videos are so well polished. Your content is so much better than a lot of other creators. This isn't putting down any other creators. Their content is absolutely fantastic!!! I just think your content is just that much more polished! I truly believe that your content is TV quality. You can tell you spend a lot of time editing to get to your finished video. It always shows in your content the love you have to make it such good quality. Thank you so much for the amount of time and effort you put into your channel. I love this channel as well. There is only 1 video right now, but I am watching it as well. Why am I not bored watching someone split wood for an hour? I don't know. Thanks again, Jon, for the GREAT content. Your viewers really do appreciate all you do!!
Do not ever change Jon,I love everything you post.

People who have never split firewood have no idea how difficult it is and how time consuming it is - to split large rounds. In fact, for me, if it's 30 inches or so, and has more than one knot or a Y in it, I just roll it over the hill and forget about it. I simply can no longer pick them up and set them on the splitter. I have to put the splitter in vertical mode and sit on a bucket, to do the work. I've given some thought to putting a third function valve on my Case 480 backhoe and using it like your track hoe. The bonus to burning the big ones - there a lot a fire wood in them! The emerald ashborer bug killed about 400 of my ash trees and sadly some of them going to go to waste. There's more than I can burn. Great video and I like the new channel! If you mentioned it, it went over my head. Thanks Jon! Lee PS: Don't you just hate it - when you cut'm an inch too long! PSS: I was wondering what you did to you hand when I watched the air conditioner install last night! Yep, I hate it when I can't find my gloves!
I’m so happy you posted something this week! I’m a software developer with near zero hands-on experience on the sort of things that you do and share, but I’ve grown to love your content and watch it religiously every week. Keep up the great work, Jon! 🎉
A day in the life of Jon the Farmer. How's that for an idea? No serious editing just what days consist of....your a good man Charlie Brown! Keep it up
Thank you! I slept through almost all of this like a baby, then woke up just in time to see you almost break your hand. You get paid and I had a great nap. A win-win.
Good to watch. Murphy's law on that falling wood, could have gone anyplace else in the whole shed but it decided to pick your hand. Everyday life on the farm, with all the stuff you work on to use, is always good to watch.
You decide Jon, it is kinda nice to have you and Ants Pants channel on a saturday morning watch, so then I'm pumped to get in my shop as well :)
Never commented on your channel before but have never missed a post! I hear what your saying, for me, anything you post I will view and like! Your humor and quality of content works for me, be it dropping a tree on your chain saw, catching your man lift on fire or upgrading your off grid electrical! Its all good! Continue your YT journey as best you can I will be Semper Fi to FarmCraft102!
Good vid Jon. I think the vast majority of us would be happy with you alternating between your normal content and low-edit output like this.
I made it from the beginning to the smashingly good part in about 30 seconds. Sorry, I run plenty of equipment and watching isn't quite the same for me, but I do love your channel. Last year, I saw the video on sharpening chain saw chains while I was cleaning up some property and I became hooked. Sometimes there are good nuggets in videos like this and luckily I can scan through or spend more time watching depending on how my day is going. Obviously, not every video will match what each viewer wants at the particular time they run across it. Your videos are great to watch when I am trying to go to sleep. I need something to sooth my brain that never stops designing, creating, or fixing and a voice that is easy on the ears, but not something like a series or drama that will engage my brain too much. Your videos make my brain happy, until it checks out. I don't watch youtube on my tv in the bedroom but rather at my computer desk on a decent size monitor where I can read and post comments from a comfortable chair. When working out of town, I do watch youtube from bed, on my phone and your channel is one of my favorites to end the day with. The previous video was started while out of town and then I finished it at home. Other times, I catch your videos while stopping for lunch and they motivate me to keep working on my projects or to get back to work when working for someone else. As a sufferer from chronic pain and discomfort, sometimes I can't do a lot physically, but can stimulate my brain while resting my body. Thanks for all the effort you put into making videos. While working on my own projects, I often think about how I would capture the work just to share in an amateur video but I don't have the drive to do that since I realize how much work it can be and I am more of a behind the camera kind of person, with a degree in photography that I have only used for hobby stuff. Anything you want to show should go on the second channel and I agree with making it a low production project. Some people like the long real time videos, but you might consider some short segments on projects, if they don't fit on the main channel. While I HATE shorts, Cleetus McFarland does some short random videos on the second channel that are more raw and realistic, like a behind the scenes channel. Sometimes they could fit on either channel, but on the second channel, people don't expect a tv quality production and he can do less editing. Hell yeah brother, what a great time to live in where we can talk directly to those who entertain and educate us vs. just watching what This Old House or Home Time decides is a good episode for the masses. Some of us appreciate real life vs. what comes planned out from a studio or "reality" tv show. The other thing I appreciate is not hearing a bunch of random so called music that is free to use on every channel. Your content is what I came to see and hear and that is what I get. Your channel and viewers are a little different from many mainstream channels and I will bet that others also appreciate and have the attention span to handle less production. Voice over or machine sounds are always great for timelapse videos and silence is OK, despite what many people think. You seem to be on the right track, at least for my tastes, so keep it easy on you and see how the numbers turn out on your statistics. Thanks!

Jon, I'm such a huge fan of yours. I absolutely love all your videos. When I heard you say 2nd channel, I jumped on over here and subscribed, lol. Your humor and knowledge really make these videos very entertaining. I can only imagine what you go through every week to post these, but I'm so glad you find time to do them, thank you.
John (or Jon, whichever way you spell it), I found the video to be quite enjoyable. That idea for the splitter on the ex was definitely a winner! I think it would be a grand idea to simply have the camera with you while you are doing your chores around the farm. Splitting firewood, moving the cows, fixing a leaky faucet, whatever you have for the day. It could almost be like we are there for a visit. For instance, in this video, it would have been cool to have the camera INSIDE the cab of the excavator, and just hearing what's on your mind during the process of splitting the firewood. Feel free to talk about whatever comes to mind, ask questions, editorial content, things happening around the farm, plans for future projects, issues with current ones. Just a couple of guys riding around in the cab having idle conversation while getting things done. I think that would be an enjoyable and entertaining video, and honestly, it's times like those when some difficult problems can be solved as your talk through them. It also wouldn't need a whole lot of editing, either, because honestly, who edits their conversations when friends come for a visit?
long hours of work, short intervals of satisfaction. That's reel life.
You could make a video of yourself washing your truck and we would watch it to listen to you narrate it and show us new techniques. I'll never work on a bulldozer or dig a pond, but I have learned a lot from you that has gotten me out of some tight pinches at work. Thanks for everything you do!
You have a very comfortable screen prescense that I for one find entertaining, educational and “real”!! Do what you can, and just don’t stop!!!
I rarely comment on anything but I'm glad you do what you do. As for the time commitments - Don't do more than you want to do. When this becomes unfun for you, then it'll become unfun for us. And if you want to do more, then hire an editor if that's the thing that's getting in your way. You generally post evergreen content and have a good following. I think you'll find the investment in an editor to be better than break-even and likely let you have more fun without feeling like every minute you film is just 5 minutes more in front of a monitor. Strike up a convo with Cole the Cornstar, he just did a small piece on how his editor has helped him. I bet he'd have some good advice.

That was my input too. Maybe even use a local high school kid to do some of the basic editing that takes a bunch of time.
I personal love your fix it videos, your knowledge on what you can do is amazing. I understand it takes a good amount of time to put the longer videos together. I would suggest maybe 1-2 shorter videos a week, maybe something like just showing how a tool works, maybe something about the farm. This way people know your still alive. The most important thing I can suggest to you is don't burn yourself out.
Hey Jon, hi from New Zealand. I’ve been following you for a few years now and find all your content an easy watch and informative. Don’t fret too much on the editing as what makes it good content is the honesty with mistakes and you learning as well. Keep positive and the videos coming. Kia Ora from NZ.
Jon, I (and I suspect the majority of your viewers) will watch anything you post. I also think that the extra efforts that you put into your videos have a steep dwindling return in terms of the effort to produce them and number of subs. Drone shots are nice, overdubs and clarifying screen notes are useful - but in the end it's the subject at hand and the entertainment of the process. A lot of YT creators fall into this bigger and more is better trap at their personal demise. I say use the KISS principle (which is a core part of your life anyway!), and do away with the complexity and editing time. I think you will find your viewers haven't moved an inch.

You've probably stopped looking at these comments by this time but here goes...I watch your videos because of you. I enjoy your personality and content. While a weekly video is nice, it's not necessary because of the reasons you cited. Videography isnot fast nor easy. It is time consuming and arduous. This is why I hope you get paid well for your work. I hear other content providers talking about demonetization of videos and it's a shame. Videos easily triples the time needed to complete even the simplest tasks and we, as viewers, understand that. I think that most viewers appreciate your time by watching. I would be happy to see more viewers hit the like button so as to give you a "raise" in earnings.
Morning John, please don't worry because what ever you post is just brilliant and so enjoyable to watch. Please don't put yourself under too much pressure as what you post is worth waiting for 👍

Jon, I’m not the only one still here….haha. Surprised it wasn’t broken, glad it wasn’t!! You’re getting lots of sea time! Thanks
I can’t believe I’ve watched an hour of someone splitting wood with an excavator. Now imagine if you had one of those rotating attachments for your hitch…keep it up
I appreciate what you do. I'm happy to play this channel in the background while I'm doing chores. Your other channel I sit and take notes.
Awesome! I'm all for more content that's not a huge burden, it's incredible you're able to post as much (and as quality) content as you do while keeping up with everything else! Certainly very appreciated that you take the time to do anything at all. If it's another thing that's simple for you to film, I for one would love to see some farm chores.
Hey Jon, I am so grateful that you take time to do these videos. Not sure how one person can know so much about so many things, but it is for sure the product of a very intelligent person with a very inquisitive and thoughtful mind. And because of that, I have also learned a great deal and would have the confidence to take on rebuilding a hydraulic cylinder, or an engine, or buying and using a lathe or mill to name a few. Great job in all you do.

ASMR! Great! I need another sleeping video! Great job John, thanks. I always rewatch from where I fell asleep. At 65 it is really tough to sleep so I get it when I can.😴 Oh yeah, that was a great idea for a log splitter attaching it to your excavator. I may build one for my son, he just got one.
I'd be happy to just see videos of you doing what farmers do.
I am so sorry for your accident. Get better soon and thanks for showing the work.

John you just keep doing you love the show and content you put out and your strange wacky humor.
Good idea on releasing more unedited content. I’m personally excited for the new channel.
I very much enjoy your video's and I appreciate anything you do in your video's, so what ever you are able to post is good for me,Thank John.
20 hours for one video? You have patience, and your videos are amazing. I wouldn't begin to know how to do that or spend the time. Unless it is a ridiculous amount of money for it. A video every 2-3 weeks sounds reasonable. Kind of, at that rate. Keep up the good work
I, for one, am only asking for the great content you deliver. On the 101 channel. You rock. I can wait for you to have enough time to deliver your great videos. If it takes more time, so be it. I could only take 18 minutes of this asmr drivel and I was done. I just couldn't take any more. Nothing against your back saving tool. I just need more. lol I would come help out but I can't do my own chores thanks to my old bones. Rebuilding can only accomplish so much. Haven't cut my sisters grass in 6 months. A week after that the thieves got me for my last mower. lol Forget any pressure from these armchair needy people. Work like yours takes time and they will just have to wait. They sure as hell ain't going anywhere. Content like yours doesn't just materialize. It is just as you said, lots of time and effort on your part and you sure as hell don't need the stress. Thank you for all you do for us.
Easy Sub! Great content as per!
Fantastic video Glad you chose wood splitting and not painting.😂
As I watched the log splitter I realized you did a good job building the splitter. Then I thought what if the slitter head was a tapered triangle or cross so each cycle would produce 3 or 4 pieces. This would make your hour video 30 minutes and would produce another great diy modification video which I admire just how creative you are. Of course, they were some beautiful rounds and would probably have split equally either way. My first video I saw of you was you playing with you Johnson, which told me I have to keep an eye on this guy. Now one of my favorite channels. Find a high school kid and make him your editor. He will do it in a quarter of the time you do and all from his phone.
Your editing is spot on
People really underestimate the work that goes into editing. You do a great job and most of us are happy to wait an extra week when needed. Some channels I follow do hire out their editing to keep up a fast posting schedule. As your following grows that might be worth considering. But in the meantime I will keep enjoying your editor's touch with the seal graphics and frank self-critique. Hope this gives you an outlet for more fun lower-edit-effort videos. If you want more ideas -- I would watch an hour of Sapphire and Eloise too.
That was a deliberate and calculated attack😌👍
Would love to see some videos about the actual farm and not just the machines!
Glad you didn't have any broken bones in your hand!
That looks like fun, I’ve watched you buy, fix, modify and , use the Yanmar excavator. Now I get to see you use the splitter attachment I remember watching you design and build. You’ve come a long way from the splitting maul and a stump. I’m jealous. I missed your ‘teaching’ / explaining but totally understand the need to cut down time commitment . Thanks

Jon. As a video editor myself, I truly appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos.
By using wood in your boiler to heat your water, you are saving tons of $$$ per year. And the wood is FREE! Love that log splitter!
On Friday I was going to call you boss and complain why I did not get my weekly FarmCraft video. I must of gotten sidetracked and forgot. Anyway, this morning (Monday) I happened to see this video pop up on my feed and cancelled calling your boss. Thank you for taking time and making effort on your videos. I really enjoy your channel (channels) and look forward to viewing them. I have learned much from your videos, so please know your efforts are not unappreciated. Thank you very much.

When I've noticed you have a new channel subscribed straight away, I live in Falkirk Scotland and I'm not a farmer, but I really love and appreciate your videos.
🤣🤣🤣 G’day from Australia! At 69 I’m still splitting blocks by hand. Been doing it for nigh on 50 years, through a few cancer ops, liver op, heart attack & surgery. Said to the wife last year that I should look at a hydraulic splitter. She just growled and walked away, 😂. (Bloody woman) Thanks for the new channel, subscribed
Yippee!! more farmcraft! Can't believe I subbed bc of a cast AR lower project and now we're here! Keep up the great work, man 😁
You are made of hard stuff you have proven never to give up on every task you have done keep on going 👍
Jon, I'm not like many others here who will tell you what they think you want to hear( maybe they are right). I enjoy your videos as much for the narration as I do the content. I can watch wood splitting adnausium on a number of channels. Yours are more difficult and time-consuming to produce, but for me, they are worth the wait. I enjoy those about fixing equipment, but also enjoyed the ones about just doing various farm chores. It is your explanations and your asides that add so much. I much prefer quality to quantity and I think you will find most others do as well. And I hope your hand is feeling better. It actually looked like something threw that chunk of wood at you. Haven't angered any woodchucks have you?
John, no need for any fancy editing here. Love to watch your excavator split some wood after seeing you build it in the first video. Spent two days splitting 1.5 cord beech and maple with a tiny electric $299 harbor freight 5 ton splitter. Similar size that you are working with, but damn is it a full body workout while you are over here sitting in a nice seat moving some controls around. Very jealous! Keep posting the long "ASMR" stuff!
It does take a long time to edit, so your effort is certainly appreciated. Each week a couple guys and I at work, will just kind of bs about your videos (along with Andrew Camarata, the essential craftsman, and the Morgans) I also do many things that you're into, here on our land in the Adirondacks. Welding, fabrication, ground and tree work, firewood, construction etc.... love your stuff. Easy sub!
Excellent Jon! I must admit I couldn't watch the entire video (the middle was like watching paint dry) but I did skip forward and watch the end so you could say I didn't miss anything. 😉The injury replay......I couldn't look away. I think throwing in some farm and home chores is an excellent choice, with less editing. I'm in!
Oof, I know what that feels like. This was probably 10 years ago, I was helping stack bundles of split logs my parents buy for our fireplace in the winter, the bundles are probably about 40ish pounds and I had a bundle fall on my hand while stacking because the crappy nylon strap broke. I swore like a salor for a good 15min before my hand stopped throbbing. I'm SOOO glad I was wearing steel toe boots that day because the bundle did fall on my foot after my hand, the bridge of my left foot was sore for a little.
Man I’ve had those little annoying injuries like that so many times, I know exactly how you felt, probably just wanted to yell obscenities and destroy random things in the moment. You know you’ve reached KZread super stardom when people will just watch you do mundane tasks and love it. Thanks for the extra content.
Just my observation. You need to make that splitter a 4 way or even a 6 way for bigger logs. Nice project to see it working in action. Keep it coming. Great videos.
Love being "the one" who watched to the end. Superb video. Please continue to do you!
I was a bit worried, that there is no video. It was my saturday morning routine for a while now to watch the newest episode. But the second channel will do nicely. Thanks for the amazing content. See you next week here or on the other cannel. Cheers from Germany
The Log Splitter is pretty impressive. Long videos require a lot of commitment from your viewers. Most of us will not stay if it gets too long. I appreciate your effort.
One thing for sure--gravity always wins! MY biggest turn-off to videos is length. My feeble mind gives up after about 45 minutes. Few can get or keep my attention for longer than that. Breaking different actions into shorter videos or speeding up repetitive actions helps a lot. In this case, after the first 5-6 logs getting split, I jumped along until something else happened. That homemade splitter of yours is a champ! So little to go wrong with it.
You are lucky it didn't break from how it looked on slow motion. I honestly appreciate the extra time you take to start a 2nd channel. I enjoy watching your videos because I like the detail you put into them and the work you find yourself doing. I find you and your videos very entertaining and just like hanging out with you lol. For me this is another way I can entertain myself so if you edit less, we can always skip around in the video.
think this is going to be my favorite channel. if you need to take time off then my guy take a week or two off of youtube, you have been making huge videos every week, honestly have no idea how you do it.
Even some footage of tractor work is good to watch sometimes.
Every video of yours is something incredible. I've already watched many of them a couple of times. What if you made videos for 30 minutes and added natural beauty or simple farm work to them? When I was looking for a video on how to cut down a tree, I had no idea what kind of brilliant KZread I found.
I am suffering a similar hand injury. Yours was one good THWACK... mine was death of 100 cuts after doing a brake job where i whacked my hand a dozen times slipping off a rounded caliper bolt and every time was a louder curse. Nothing more fun than injuring an injury :) the excavator splitter does look like fun! on a side note, us city folks envy your property and tools (and skills to keep it going!). you should start up a theme park and let us city folks "spend a day on the farm!"
So sorry for your injury!
I'm glad Dozer didn't get smashed (LOL)! It isn't a gem when someone gets hurt. I'm glad it wasn't broken. Good video.
Jon, happy to watch whatever you have time to produce
You are definitely lucky you didn't break something. Thanks for sharing.
I built a splitter similar to yours. It’s on the front-end loader of my 4×4 tractor. I like to split my wood onto a trailer and back it up to the woodshed so I don't have to lift it up off of the ground. Make yourself a good pickerroon that will help lift and drag the split stuff when you are stacking.
Jon, thank you for your great content. I have been laid up due to recovering from a surgery. I just discovered your channels and have binged your videos. I love them and now make them part of my viewing list. I must admit that I appreciate your fast forward sections of the more mundane work. As a suggestion on your use of the 102 channel. Maybe that channel you can use it for product reviews. I realize that the creation and editing of your content is time intensive and likely conflicts with your work on your farm. Two channels probably make things worse but I understand the reasoning for having them. You have a great selection of equipment that it would be great to get your thoughts on how they work for you. Keep up the great work!!!
...you should make more videos. That's what you should do. You created us monsters, John.
"I try to protect them, but I don't do a good enough job". A short count shows 10 fingers and presumably 10 toes. You do a fine job. It'll heal :)
Hey Jon enjoy what vids you can do!! Understand totally u have a day job too 🤷♂️ keep em coming when u can 😊
Damn that would have hurt. I felt your pain. We will be here whenever you can fit us in. Most of us are patient to wait . Look after that hand.
Jeez that "bonus" made me wince big time. Glad it's not broken. The splitter seems to work ok, if rather slow. Damn sight easier than doing it with a splitting axe or blockbuster though.
Hey Jon, you have done a great job of building up quite a following! I personally like the unedited versions personally! Hopefully gives you more time for more content! Thank you!
Sometimes, keeping the video simple works....its shows us subscribers you working in real time.....good luck with the new channel.....😊🏴
I hand split all our stove wood here in N. Michigan, and it gets harder every year.. 75 next year. But still love doing it and being in the woods! Always watch all your videos!
3:43 I've split huge chunks like that with a maul and wedges back in the day so this was beautiful to watch. It's a really cool add-on for the excavator! :)

Yeah, me too. That’s why I made the splitter! 😂
Great idea, this second channel. You are one of the best in the 'net, so more is truely better. Your superior audio/visual skills and A/V equipment choices elevate your channel above the rest. A suggestion: recruit a few of your dedicated viewers to help you post-produce your videos on both channels. Remote editing is now a thing, and they can do a lot of the grunt work for you. Following a storyboard you create for each video, they can cut, splice, time correct, color correct, audio edit and correct, and then after you do your overlays and corrections, assemble and do the final rendering. You can store the raw media you shoot and record to a Google Enterprise Workspace Gdrive for them to access. You could accelerate your worflow tremendously. I'm sure there are folks who would love to support you in this way (myself included). Cheers! Mark
Good Video. Great to see your skill with the splitter improving with use. I'll keep watching til the end, even if you don't injure yourself.
