First, what is the split-level home?
In most of the states in the country Split level house is style of house that usually a starter home because of the low cost to build it and the size (around 2,000 sq ft), it is very rare to find big split-level home, here is new jersey you can find some big one and they are usually homes that an addition built up.
This home has various of living areas on separate levels usually 4 or more, the levels are usually half levels some will go up and some will go down.
One of the unique features of split level is noticed right when you open the front door….
As soon as you open the front door you will notice that there are is stercase either upstairs toward the living room or downstairs going down to the basement.
There are few variations and styles for split level homes depends on the location and the time that it was built, however in all of them if you go anywhere in the home you will have to go up or down through a small staircase.
In the main level you will find the living room, dining room and kitchen.
The bedrooms will be upstairs and family room and the basement are down level from the main floor.
So, including the basement level most split levels home will have 5-6 levels!!!
Because of the multi levels situation you will find that most split levels home will be on a wide lot.
From the front of the house, you usually can pick these homes out pretty Easley.
When you stand in front of the house and look at the front door, the door should be located in between the upstairs windows to the downstairs windows.

Pros
1)Split level homes are usually very affordable because they are not big so they also have a great resale value. Because there are lots of buyers for affordable homes.
2)The separation of the deferent living areas
This can be a pro or a con.
Because of the layout of the homes the bedrooms are separated from the living area as well as the family area that is separated from the living area.
3)Lots of designs options
Having more levels gives more options for more design features inside and outside.

Now lets talk about the cons
1) The separation of the deferent living areas
As I mentioned before this is can be a con, depends on what are you looking for.
Most buyers these days prefer the open style floor plan when kitchen, living room, dinning room and family room are all on the same level and this is not the case in the a split level house.
2) Too much climbing -Stairs, stairs, and more stairs
As we mentioned anywhere you will go in the home you will have to climb up stairs or either to go down the stairs so its not ideal for families with babies or elderly people with mobility issues.
3) Not easy to add an addition to the house
Because of the multi levels situation in case you want to expend the house and build an addition it will be extremely difficult, most contractors prefer not get involved with a project like that.
4)They're not the most aesthetically pleasing
All split level homes have the garage attached to the house right on the main level and that is why the half of the façade of the house is a garage not really a nice curb appeal .
