Hey, I can remember age 4 vividly and being enthralled by MTV videos (Michael and Prince were my top dawgs). But instead of this one, I remember the Crowded House videos, "Something So Strong" and "Don't Dream It's Over". Classic tunes.
If Split Enz had originated in Britain or the US, they would be music legends now, but they are Legends in NZ and maybe Oz only, I love reading comments from people overseas, who discovered them, and love the band as much as us kiwis, .

Bret Easton Ellis, an American author, explicitly mentions this song playing in a scene from his new novel, set in 1981 in Los Angeles. That's how I found out about it. So I think it was probably popular stateside as well, at least among younger people who sought out "new wave" stuff in the late-70s/early-80s.
@KevXRDuke

Relax, this song was on rotation in the early days of MTV. MTV needed videos to play, so a lot of unknown bands from the UK and other places became famous because they had videos. Videos at the time were just made for the music industry to promote albums. They used to be shown on Don Kirshners Rock Concert and the Midnight Special late at night. For example they would say "Special appearance by the Rolling Stones". You would think they would be on the show and they would play a video of a song from the album Emotion Rescue. MTV just made a channel of those videos. Not every band made videos at the time!!! So MTV needed material.
If you're an American and you meet a New Zealander tell him or her you're a fan of Split Enz or that you admire the Finn brothers and you have a friend for life.

One of the best songs of the 80s
I’ve started reading “Don’t Dream It’s Over, The Remarkable Life of Neil Finn”, a biography by Jeff Apter. I’m up to chapter 5 now, and am captivated. I was 6 when this song came out and it became an anthem for me dealing with the breakup of my parents, their divorce, and ongoing custody battle of us kids. Even though that was a bad time of my life, I always remember this song with fond memories, and it will always remain a favourite of mine. The words of a song can have so many different meanings for different people, depending on what is going on in their lives.

One of the best hooks in rock history!
Anyone in Tempe or Phoenix AZ during this era? This song hit everyone around me like a ton of bricks. We were all switched on. The laser etched logo on the actual record got everyone excited. A friend who had just bought the album excitedly showed it to me. I was in my 20s. For me, not exactly an age of innocence. It was wild. I had a helluva lot of fun, in college, work hard, party harder, and pogo like crazy, wearing "weird" clothes, skinny ties, thrift shop 60s pointed kitten heels, cat boots, sheath, minis and drndl skirts with old toreador pants, beaded cardigans. All from the Goodwill😊. Mixed with neon colors of the 80s. Blue and green hair. Smoking cloves. We really stood out. So called straight people acted afaid of us, lol. This was all brand new. It was a very creative time as well, as friends and acquaintances formed new bands that played at new nightclubs that catered to New Wave and punk fans. Most of us loved both genres. I still dress a bit crazy. This scene was radical compared to the "in between days" throughout most of the 70s. I love this song
Split Enz; the most underrated band of all time. They were before their time but not mine, thank God. Saw them live on their reunion tour. Loved loved it! Down with the stupid Falkland wars and Thatcher!

This band is the absolute bomb of the era. They are incredible and they will always be unique. They don’t follow any trend. They did what they did and it exploded.
I was growing up in Nashville TN USA. I heard them in various outlets. In Nashville, in the mid-1980s, we had an AM radio station with a "Rock of the 80s" format. Back when radio stations had overnight staff. So one night I called to ask to hear a Split Enz album. I said I didn't care which one, just that it was Split Enz. Iris. I Wouldn't Dream of It. I Hope I Never. All I want is any and all of those.

@willdiedrich Yeah, LP's meant so much then, it was like going on a journey and reliving it over and over. True Colours was definitely an album to play over and over.
I remember this from being in the UK charts when I was at junior school (scarily I'm 51 now). Only reached number 12 in the UK but sounded kind of unique and futuristic at the time. A year or two later later bands like Ultravox & OMD started to copy their sound so guess they were ahead of their time and made good use of the new generation of synthesizers that had just come on the market. Had no idea they were from NZ either. It still sounds fresh and if it wasn't for historic proof I'd have placed this song as sounding as if it was from about 1985. The video doesn't look 41 years old either and videos often age the song more than the music does.

Neil Finn was already writing top ten hits, years before Crowded House. For some reason I was singing this song today.
I was fifteen when i seen these guys at the roxy on the strip, a time when the new wave was coming to america the motels, flock of seagulls. I was a drummer trying to get in a band, fun times, great memories.. good vibes to all that rock!..
Still at school when this came out, Fuck !! where has the 40 years gone.

Gem of a band. Left of centre. Did their own thing. Loved them. Wicked guitar riff. Great keyboards
I listen to this song 10 times in a row, that's good for the year!😊
Another great song from split enz ..didn't stop there ..they went on with ..of course .crowded house..these great songs will live forever !!
Brings me right back to college and meeting my husband 🎉
Oh my god this brings back some great memories. I used to follow a cover band called Bystander at the Jersey shore. The lead singer passed away Friday He used to sing this song too. So sad

OMGGGGGGGGG! I loved this song sooooo much back in the good old days!!! Smiling big right now!!
We wore this album out when I was in college. Such upbeat fun.
Remember it so well. LOADSA meories....Well done Mr Finn..
A truly awesome 80s anthem.
In my 60’s and last year was my first time hearing this song on an episode of My Life Is Murder w/Lucy Lawless. It’s on my playlist now, luv it. ❤
First time i heard this song, 4 of us, 2 kiwis 1 Aussie and a Yankee boy were travelling from Sydney to Cairns in an old 66 Fairlane. Radio full blast!! It was 1980, and this song came on. Didn't know who it was. Thought it might be a West Coast US band. But loved the song!! In 1980. This song was all over the radio and tv in NZ and AUS! So later found out it was Split Enz!! First heard them in Wellington NZ 1975! Back then, the word around town was, you must see this band! They are different!! - Kind of vaudevillian!! Anyway, by the end of the show. - Nobody wanted to go home!!!
I'm really surprised this doesn't have more views. One of my fave 80s songs.
I just loved this when it came out. And still do!
was 16 when this came out, still sounds brilliant
One of my fave songs since it came out, and I’m 60 now! Foot has to tap automatically when I hear it ❤️ Chorus has always sounded like a Beatles or Monkees vibe to me 😊
The first time I ever listened to countdown this song was number 1. I thought it was the best song ever. I was 13. This is the first time I’ve heard it for about 35 years (I left Australia 🇦🇺 n 1996). But I could still remember the words. Music stays with you.
Awesome tune, 52 here, I remember this was rocking when I was in middle school.
Saw Crowded House a month or so ago and they played this song. Everyone (me included) went f*ing nuts. They sounded this good!!!
Timeless! Kiwi music🎶👍🇳🇿
First heard this song belting out the outside speaker system at a Butlins holiday camp , it’s stayed in my memory over many decades as for the holiday zero recollection

Hi I recommend a song and video called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
I can't even explain why but Tim Finn freaks me out in this vid. Obviously I keep coming back though. Absolute banger.
Loved Split Enz in the 80s & now in 2023!!!
I hadn’t heard this in so long. It played in a big box bargain store in Kentucky the other day & I’ve revisited it 25 times since on my motorbike! It still sounds like Belfast to me despite NZ. What a deserved hit ❤⚡️
Always loved Split Enz ....my stereo spend lots of time playing their tunes .... cranked!!!!! lol Especially this song and Six Months in a Leaky Boat. Just great tunes.
