In retrospect, the concept art certainly does paint a darker, more sinister portrait of the Side Order story than the one we actually got. I wished the devs fleshed out the story way more than they actually did.

Something about this trailer feels a lot more "dangerous" and "organic" than the virtual world approach we got. The flashes of red ink, the use of more pale/darker (almost bone-like) colors and the focus on the coral patterns makes me think that apart from the aesthetic being a lot more dark and creepy they probably had a _VERY_ different approach to the story than the final one. I could be wrong, but man, I really wish the final Side Order felt this lonely and creepy.

It feels like they had an idea, made a lot of the assets, but then realized that they didn't have enough time to finish their project and rushed to the finish line, cutting as many corners as possible. It makes me sad :(

This trailer compared to the final result will make me so sad for as long as I play Splatoon.

This trailer gives me a mix of sadness, nostalgia, eeriness, and curiosity. It makes me think of what happened to Pearl, Marina, 8, and even 4, after the final splatfest.

I'm not disappointed of how side order ended up, but man we could get the most dark, creepy and wholesome story mode from all the saga. All this concept arts and lonely feelings were completely interesting and honestly hyped me more than the next trailers that released. It look liked the devs were cooking so good why they stopped and cooked again?😢

I'm a little disappointed that Side Order didn't live up to this trailer. All this trailer does is establish a tone: mysterious, introspective, somber, and epic. It looks like NieR; Octoling. Now, you would think that a purely vibes-based trailer would actually get the vibe right, but nope. Side Order is a fun little adventure where you hang out with your friends in cyberspace and fight a little octopus guy. And I enjoyed it, but it is NOT what this trailer made it out to be.

a lot of it was! a glimpse of Acht in the elevator, our first glimpse of Marina Agitando, a shadow of a parralel canon, the foyer, a version of when eight wakes up after beating the initial spire(the 10 floor one), though it doesn't show marina due to spoilers, tentacles similar to the ones used by Overlorder, as well as what appear in the background of your initial battle against overlorder on floor 30, and concept art of jelletons! Also worried marina made it in the final game in one of the last main story cutscenes when she tries to plead with Order. A lot of the concept art made it basically.

I know right, I have a feeling that side order was supposed to be a dlc with a dark story and a lot of things going on, but it probably got rushed, perhaps i could be wrong, but still kinda sad :(

watching this after beating side order…surreal.

what i picked up from this: -pearl and marina appear to not be “color washed” -clones on a conveyor belt -black ink -the centerpiece of inkopolis looks like an elevator, maybe that’s how we travel through levels? -pearl and marina are mostly shown separately -a mysterious figure is seen in the background walking away from what looks like tentacles on the hair of an inkling (or it could just be a rock idk 💀)

I find it clever that in the trailer, they manage to have the audio be distorted but still sound very beautiful. If you really listen t the trailer's music, you can hear certain tones don't line up as they should, weird intervals and melodic cacophony make the song sound distorted, like an old Tape that ain't playing right. But the music designers still managed to make it sound super pretty

I think Marina is in trouble Commander Tartar was on Team Order, the team Marina was on In Splatoon 2 Callie was the villain as her team had lost Perhaps the same thing happened to Marina. Notice how in the one image of just Marina she appears glitchy. Her hair also appears to have a galaxy design in the various Splatoon 3 artworks of her. Is this just how she appears in her album colors since she thought it looked pretty, or is that how her hair looks like in universe? Honestly really excited to see what her galaxy hair looks like in 3D, but if her hair is indeed galaxy patterned could this mean something or is it just to be pretty? That’s not my main point though I think Marina might have been sanitized, and part of the story is trying to find her and restore her to her former self. That’d explain her and Pearl’s mysterious absence from the game while Callie and Marie still appeared throughout it.

This is a good theory, but it is also a stretch. I feel like Tartar and the Octarian army can play a big role only cause it's attached to Marina and 8's memories. Either way I still cannot wait for this dlc and I am so glad it's all being very secretive!

Oh for fuck's sake how many times do I have to say this... Splatoon 1's final splatfest had no impact on 2's story. Regardless of who won, Callie would have been the villain and Marie would have been the mentor. The devs stated in an interview that they originally wanted 1's final splatfest to affect the story, but they decided not to since 2 was already far into development by the time the Callie vs. Marie splatfest happened. Plus, look at Callie's main ink color and Octarian ink. Doesn't it make more sense to have her as the antagonist? Anyways with that rant aside, everything else forms a solid theory.

actually a lot of the photos appear glitchy and if she were sanitized (ignore this part if I got your idea wrong) Commander tartar is already dead and she would be instantly gone and sanitized and yeah it’s her splatoon 3 design outfit because she’s also wearing the same outfit and also marina and pearl have almost no relation to the Squidbeak splatoon which is why they don’t appear in story mode and they’re on world tour

I feel like it's the splatoon 2 plaza after chaos won and it's been abandoned after everyone moved to splatsville, it makes me think of what happened to pearl and marina

​@@jakcesleepingrn5739 but they sure lose a lot of traffic, since you can see in a sunken scroll that sheldon already closed his store once on inkopolis plaza sometime during splatoon 1 & 2 I know that plaza and square aren't just abandoned after their respective games, but they lose their status as popular meeting points, so as the business move into another location, so do the cephalopeople that use the services provided by these businesses (Although i don't think they're abandoned, this is certainly not the same square as splat 2's one)

After beating side order 1000% I was left with a little disappointment that the story wasn't as deep as we all thought it was going to be. I was hoping that the images we've seen in this trailer might have more touch on side order. Also the music, I like side orders ost but the whole creepy music box music made the game seem more mysterious and unnerving. Overall side order was good but to me it wasn't as good like octo expansion

I loved Side Order. Over 20 runs of it. I wish we got the more lonely and eerie atmosphere and story originally planned.

I have a theory that it may be a Bake-kujira, a skeleton ghost whale that is said to bring pestilence or diseases. I have a feeling that this place could be another realm or another plain of existence and the Bake-kujira is the ruler of this realm and is probably using Marina for its own sinister purpose.

​@@thatoneguy2535yeah but it's literally about the murder (BLENDING) of over 10,000 octolings, mind control, mass genocide, and memory loss. but honestly i agree with the whole vibe thing. the lore is dark but the vibes are cool and fun.

i love side order as it released but dang none of this made it in, none of the images were explained, the brain coral never appeared, the entire tone seems to have shifted during that year, the red ink and nuclear warnings are absent, and the sad and melancholic feel of the music was replaced with more splatoony music over the depressed music box. i love side order as it is but the colourlessness and lack of things we teased here really dissapoints me as opposed to what we were teased.

along with that, the cloning line wasn't in it and might have been replaced with the boring old production one, the orange splattershot and walkie talkie from one of the artworks didn't appear, and the elevator here that looked bigger and more formal was replaced with the smaller more sleek one.

Finally someone said it. It wasn’t necessarily bad but I feel like this teaser hyped it up to much, The music, the ambiance, the cloning?? I was kinda disappointed playing it and seeing it was max 1 hour long. I am a huge fan of octo expansion and I was hopping it was as good. I feel like it was just a bunch of waisted potential. They could’ve done so much more, and yes I know it is a rouge like but it had almost 0 story,like come on. What made octo expansion good was the story and side order was definitely lacking it, I just wish they focused on the story instead of the replay ability.

this makes me realöize how the lobby in this trailer looks way different than how it ended up in the actual dlc

I’ve looked at some of the images and i’ve come to a conclusion for what happened to Inkopolis Square. spoiler warning in case that matters to you. In a lot of the images, there’s this black ink that covers the ground. Then it shows this fish thing that might’ve been the one who spread the black ink. Maybe this black ink is able to drain the color of everything it comes into contact with? We know this is the real inkopolis square because the eshop says something along the lines of “Find out what happened to Inkopolis Square”. That means this black ink / the fish is a huge threat to all these inkling and octoling and Agent 8, Pearl, and Marina are going to stop the fish before the ink spreads to other areas. Obviously I may be completely wrong, but it’s just a theory. Edit: After the new trailer was revealed, I’m actually quite surprised that I was right about the fish and the black ink. We still don’t know much about the story, besides it being hinted that we’re searching for Marina.

In the sixth row in Stickers, at the rewards box in grizz industry, the second item is a sticker called "GCI-XLSMN neon" the "GCI" I have nothing for, BUT!!!! "XLSMN" literally means "Extra Large Salmon" and at the 0:26 part of the video, there's what shows to be a haunting large image of a red eyed salmon like creature. The image and the sticker itself BOTH look EXACTLY the same in comparison!!! if anyone actually sees this. SPREADING IT LIKE WILD FIRE!!!

my theories for this trailer 0:16 we see pearl holding something, something that appears to be round with a warm color glow. this is a stretch but I think it could be a salmon egg 0:20 we see an octoling holding what seems to be a charger of some sort in their left hand. another stretch but I think what she's holding in her right hand can be a slosher model or an egg canon? but a logical answer would be an ink tank. 0:21 we see a shadow of an inkling (pointy ears) that seems to have short hair. I looked through some of the band members and i don't see any who have short hair like this. meaning this could be a new character. 0:24 I feel like just barely in the distance I can see an inkling or someone standing there? but again its very very unclear. 0:25 we see an octoling with long hair. their hair is similar to agent 8's so it could be hers just grown out and longer. but they have pointy ears which would indicate that they're an inkling 0:25 / 0:26 we see an octo standing on what seems to be floating platforms. in the octo expansion chat room pearl talks about how marina made her own turf war map in a very short amount of time. cuttlefish says that floating platforms are octarian tech and should not be trusted. my theory is this could be marinas turf war map but that's very unlikely 0:26 we see pearl with glasses on in inkopolis square. this could be where the dlc starts just like how in octo expansion we were greeted by cuttlefish looking down at agent 8 0:26 we see a large reddish brown object with glowing red eyes. I think this is the fastest frame in the whole trailer. I'm not exactly sure what this is but the thing that I think it looks most like is horrorboros/the zap fish. 0:26 we see agent 8 looking at puddles of black ink. I believe this is the first time natural realistic black ink has been seen in the franchise 0:27 I don't know what this is but the thing i thought of first was sanitized tartar 0:27 we see multiple octos walking. not sure if they are both agent 8 or something else a big stretch again is the ring that's on the paper swans neck in inkopolis square is missing but again I doubt that will mean anything. along with the paper swan the screens on inkopolis tower are rearranged and a satellite has been added. in the inkopolis plaza dlc that came out a few months ago we see a few shop keepers have returned. one however that's not there is flow who ran the hat shop in splatoon 2. my theory is that maybe they were forced to move shops due to the coral. I'd like to also mention how marina's name in the french translation has always been coralie. finally it was announced recently that there's a new band called Yoko and the gold bazookas. the small idol to the right appears to be wearing dead coral on their hat so I wonder if they will have anything to do with the side order dlc. edit: upon reading the sunken sea scrolls today and attempting to unlock them all i saw in tentakeel outpost theres a small telephone about the same size and looks identical to tartar above marie's little caged owl/bird animal. i thought this was just the same thing they did with mr grizz in splat3 where you can see his old statue behind the squid sisters in alterna. but i checked older footage that was before octo expansions release and the phone is still there. i think nintendo hides stuff in plain sight when it comes to that sort of thing. my theory is that lil judd will probably have to so with the side order dlc considering he wears the grizzco ear piece and eyepatch in the offical art edit 08/06/23: at 0:22 i realized the spikes shes standing next to resemble those post nuclear war warning spikes! either this is just a creative detail or maybe its from when the war that killed the humans happend?

BUT maybe it was a Cuttlefish after all since it does kinda represent the Cuttlefish idol stuff in octo expansion (and most of the art here doesn’t even show the hair textures, not talking about suction cups)

Insane that it’s already been a year since this dropped and now it’s coming out super soon

at 0:21 we see a new character. you can tell because the pants and shoes are both all black. no charecters confirmed to be in side order so far have fully black pants and shoes. (pearl has black pants and white shoes in side order, marina has bright orange pants OR blue pants, and deadf1sh has black boots and some kind of skirt) the shadow's ears also implies its an inkling!

So much for this i guess

@@Jacquis303 I think It Is the case Here. If we look back to OE Announcent in the 3.8.2018 Nintendo Direct It was three months away from the release. And on June 14 during the World Championship 2018 we GOT the release date. Maybe this time they Will show a trailer, then in January with the Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024 they Will reveal the release date.

Remember in the Final Fest poster thing it looks like Agent 8 is going for Order instead of Chaos. But it looks like Inkopolis Square if Order wins against Chaos. The Square however looks " Coral Bleach" Like global warming. Even tho the deca tower looks different. And looks like a normal building, I'm probably Excited for Side Order to be released since I already got the Inkopolis Plaza DLC

Did you guys see the pic where she has different shoes like the ones in octo expansion? And we heard the theory where she was in her own mindset, maybe it's her gaining memory's back?? Hopefully people see this lol :)

Looking back on this now, this seemed a lot more creepy and dark then what we got in sideorder. A little disappointed by it since I was really looking forward to a darker story, but it was fun nonetheless

I noticed that in the background at that exact moment 0:17 it sounds like someone is talking but reverb. My guess is thats marina talking to us somehow . But since in one of the flashing pictures we see what looks like a cloning procidure maybe the one whos talking to us is a clone of marina of sorts idk.

What were they cooking and why can't I experience it

Just read the interview. Or if you wanna save time then I'm just gonna say that the interview with the developers sums up as "SO never had dramatic changes and everything was stablished early in development"

@@Elbenson1083 awe, that's unfortunate. I guess it was just my brain making a whole ass fanfiction in my head. That image of 8 surrounded by the nuclear waste warning spikes feels so eerie along with the isolated imagery (minus Acht's foot in the corner of the elevator basically proving your point). I'm probably just really salty from how I feel like the story of side order is shallow, minus marina's diary entries

It makes sense, as out of chaos can come order.

After seeing the second trailer this looks like an very early concept

Honestly, Splatoon has seriously delivered each time they brought out a project. The last Expansion was one of the funkiest things I've ever seen. This trailer implies some dark and weird stuff about Octolings and is full of clever references for a bit of a medical horror feel. Even Inkopolis Square from Splatoon 2 appears to have undergone coral bleaching, a serious real life environmental issue.

@@goldenninja9053 also some images (specifically the one with the giant black spikes poking from the ground) and some audio cues re reminiscent of longterm nuclear waste warnings theres also imagery similar to brains and neurons firing impulses. who knows what sort of screwed up stuff is gonna happen in this dlc, im excited for it tbh

@@LUPITHE0NZ I'm excited for it too! I love a good mystery/thriller-esque story that messes with you a bit, which this may be leaning toward.

I have a theory: In one of the images, you can see a photo of Marina, where she appears glitchy. In the octo expansion, when you kill a sanitized Octoling, they also look glitchy before they disappear. What if Marina was/is a sanitized Octoling (her hair in Splatoon 2 also looked sanitized) and tartar tries to make her disappear. I think Marina is loosing her memories, maybe that’s why the Inkopolis plaza is white. That could also be the reason why she has this universe hair. Maybe she tried to get that sanitized ink out of her hair, so tartar can’t control her anymore. I think you play in Marinas head and that Octoling is something like Marinas inner self, trying to get her memories back.

The final boss ost, New World Order reminds me of this.

This feels like Side Order's plot is gonna be way more depressing than even Octo Expansion, which had an around 15 year old kid go through some of the scariest things in the entire series.

I love that it continued the mental stuff and expanded it even more adding themes like Fears, nostalgia and memories!

Well I’m back here after it released and I can confidently say that it’s fun and addicting but I wish we got whatever this trailer was supposed to be

I don’t know if this is just the music being distorted but at 0:19 i hear pearl talking and i dont think its marina because if you compare the voices it will definitely sound like pearl and marina has a much deeper voice

Man, this is almost verbatim to Breath of the Wild 2's announcement. Short teaser with flashes of lore for us to speculate, and most of it adds up to nothing I remember all the hype seeing Ganondorf return, the theories about the Zonai, and all those vast sky islands. So much was was obviously cut from TotK and people are realizing quickly When I saw this trailer I thought we'd see more on the origins of Marina and more of her story, maybe how Pearl comes in to her life and more scoop on Off the Hook. And then Marina really isn't the focal point of the final product at all... idk what's going on internally at Nintendo, but I know I'm just growing more and more skeptical about their trailers

this dlc looked really lonely nostalgic and creepy, in my opinion we should get agent 8 to be alone whole game except at the end, it looked like we whould get back story of agent 8, coral bleached octoling enemies, also we should get more sanitized octolings like acht that were close friends of marina, becouse she didn't wanted to leave them, like souless husks that are just roaming around, getting lost in memory, while acht whould be only one that regained memories bc of partial sanitazation, to help marina understand that she has to let go of past she can't change

This wave should launch on the last day of May.

This is pretty interesting. Hear me guys 0:02 feels like waking up slowly in a uknown place.... realizing you dont know where you are. 0:06 feels like suddenly remembering stuff and the music slowly rises 0:10 where we start suddenly remembering more and more getting closer to the point. 0:14 suddenly remembering an possible incident? 0:17 like traumatic flashbacks and overwhelming things playing at the same time, like marina calling and ambulance and the sounds ringing around your ears while it hurts. 0:22 this could be a picture of marina finding something... not so good. 0:24 panicking more and more just to- 0:27 snap out of it. Like you lost your memories. Like and instant snap to reality. 0:33 exhausted and just feeling so tired

I believe this is a new singer-player campaign.

I wanna play this so bad, I cant afford the dlc, even the octo expansion pack, But still i'm looking forward for this!

hey dude I know this is late, but the octo expansion is free on the nintendo+ expansion online pass! That's what I did. Maybe just get a month of that and you'll have access to all that library as well as octo expansion!

I completely agree. I feel like we didn't get what we were expecting, but we did get some surprises. Really wasn't expecting an Acht face reveal, let alone dedfish in 3D at all

before side order was even revealed (and i think before splatoon 3 came out) i had a dream where the splat3 dlc had you playing as agent 8 and working together with pearl to restore inkopolis which had been taken over by CHAOS and hordes of HUMAN BABIES and also you saved dedf1sh. was this kind of a prophecy? who knows

Something I noticed the Octoling has a similar hair color as Splatoon 1 and 2 Elite Octolings I was thinking that the Octoling might be a former Octarian Army member, which would explain her more mature body shape compared to 8's, and if her hair is a similar color to the Elite ones it could be providing further proof of their connection It might be a complete coincidence, but it's important for us to analyze all the details in this trailer to get an idea on what's going on

Watching this after beating side order really shows how far we’ve come

yeah side order was definitely rly fun and well done overall but it doesn’t rlly live up to the haunting, mysterious feeling this trailer evokes, so I’m a little sad about that

They should make it so that deep cut gets corrupted like all of the splatoon 2 bosses did in octo expansions and you have to fight them

Day 68 okay i might have gotten the timezone thing wrong in my comment cuz of someone else wording it wrong but atleast THIS IS the final day! It was fun to wait for the dlc to arrive^^ and watch out for spoilers!

Why does this feel like home

3 games in and Nintendo is popping off with dark trips down memory lane or is it just me

I actually did not realize before because I was so excited, but the floor seems to be covered in real snow Like. actual snow with natural little ripples in it... not even Alterna snow, which was pretty realistic already even if it was fake. There are those clumps of snow and everything, and if you look at the bottoms of the buildings, it looks like a snowstorm. There are even little flakes Idk why.. I thought it was just white for no reason There is also what seems like eels (although by silhouette alone they look quite a bit different to Frye's eels) so this may or may not be hinting at deep cut somehow involved? I am so interested in this dlc

Many people think that the “snow” is actually those little white flakes you see in the ocean, which are dead plankton and sea creatures. This would make sense, considering that it takes place in an ocean-creature themed world. There’s also bleached coral, and a weird dead fish thing that flashes on the screen quickly, which all seem to have the same theme of death. Also, the tiny little fish swimming around the octoling at the end are actually little plastic shreds if you look closely. All of this has some kind of death motif, which I find really interesting! (sorry for the rant)
