Splatoon 2 - Weapon Roles and Playstyles (Classifying every Weapon)

How should a weapon be played? I answer that in this video explaining weapon roles and playstyles where I go over every weapon explaining what it has to offer and how to fully optimize the weapons potential!
The first part of the video gives an overview about roles in this game while in the second part I go over every weapon in the game and give my opinion on its optimal playstyle! This was another bigger eductional project I had planned so maybe next it's time for a monatge again! Stay tuned!
Wadsm out.

  • @YourCrazyDolphin

    In a competetive sense, yes the more in the middle weapons are worse. But outside of highly competitive gameplay- where most of Splatoon is played- you aren't likely to find a good team composition. So it is good to have weapons that can fill a little bit of other roles, as this means if your team doesn't have great composition, you can contribute in more ways than one: even if not as effectively as another weapon. Besides that, the game would just get boring if every weapons was highly specialized, and could only be used one way.

    @1998SIMOMEGA I didn't say that. I said that it is important to have in-the-middle weapons, not that weapons can't be specialized. Having the mid ground helps cover the issue of poor team-composition always prevalent with online randoms.

    @1337VG5 жыл бұрын

    See, I agree on a basic level these are how weapons should be played, but due to maps and varying cover different weapons can take on different roles due to those changes. An example being the Splattershot Pro that you've placed in a supportive category. Personally, I play it more like a long-range slayer, and less of a support. And it's viable on certain map combos due to it's splat bomb and booyah bomb. I think what you've got here is pretty cool and very helpful for general purpose of the weapons, but at the end of the day since Splatoon has so many things going on at once, categorizing weapons like this is really difficult, which is why no one has an official statement for it. Splattershot Pro vs. Splattershot/Blaster for instance. Me using my pro as a slayer vs their slayer. Mine will likely win out due to range. I'm effectively hard-countering their weapon choices and abusing my superior range to beat them out, only losing to 'Anchors'. Making it a very effective weapon for slaying on long-range maps or maps that allow long-range, and considering good aim and positioning this can be very hard to deal with, so in my opinion it makes it a very strong slaying weapon, as opposed to picking say another Blaster or Splattershot, where I'll have to engage with my opponent more and take more of a risk. That's just my example on how a weapon can seem support based but still be very strong in a slaying position, something that doesn't go over too well when everyone has the mentality of, "Well, it's kit is ___ so it should be played like ____." At the end of the day it all depends on what you're trying to accomplish and what kind of pressure you're wanting to apply on the map, and with everyone gearing towards things that allow the most pressure the fastest, this sort of thing becomes harder to really nail down, especially when there are counter measures for specials that turn your strong support into a mediocre one that can't really do much due to lack of range and ability to combat others.

    I knew it was going to be pretty accurate, but I didn't think it'd be that accurate. However, I must clarify some bits about the Dynamo Roller. While I do agree that Dynamo's are one of the "supportive rulers", I'd say they are kind of in a bind between Area Denial heavy Supports and Aggressive Supports, as the time it takes before enough falloff damage kicks in to protect an opponent from being a one-shot actually allows dynamo players to one-shot players over a ledge, taking down an unsuspecting opponent in a lot of maps. Although this playstyle takes an immense amount of game sense and reading enemies, it is effective at guaranteeing a consistent numbers advantage for the team, making it easier to push objectives and lessen the threat directed towards the Slayers by discouraging enemy flanks. Despite having great inking power, it is not what the Dynamo excels at. Another thing going for Dynamos, when it comes to close range, is their ability to deal damage to objects. The danger with Dynamo is that you have to constantly switch between making yourself noticed in mid by having a lot of area denial going on, and going off to the side to grab a hard read kill on someone who wanted to flank before meeting you, and finally just building your special. They can be good at pushing the objective, as their mobility doesn't suffer much from carrying the Rainmaker, and their area denial abilities make them good tower pushers, but they are much better at doing the opposite, which is denying the objective, as they can easily deal with people on the tower safely, and they have huge kill power, making a correctly positioned Dynamo an instantaneous Rainmaker stopper. However, aside from these, Dynamos are pretty much lacking in all other aspects. Their flinging slowness and low mobility make them extremely bad at chasing down opponents, their weight class makes them easy picks when they are occupied, and their kill potential can be limited by the skill of your opponents, your accuracy, or simply your game sense. Despite being a Support weapon, it takes as much game sense as an Anchor.

I'm just happy I've been using my main weapon pretty much spot on. I too am a slosher, preferring to use the Bloblobber. Also fun fact about the Reef turf map: As a Support/Anchor I tend to hang out in the little alley just past the car and tree at the spawn point. Tenta Missiles coming for your woomy butt? If you immediately swim to the little building next to you and hug up against it, 98% of the time those missiles just hit the roof. Happy inking!

    @@phl0w_bty My usual build with Nautilus is emphasis on Swim Speed and Special Charge Up. Swim Speed is there so I can take better advantage of the hold charge mechanic, being able to quickly get away from a situation that I'm at a disadvantage in while also being able to attack back, which is something you can't really do with the other Splatlings. Special Charge Up I have for Baller which I use in combination with my other teammates specials so we can get a push, or in Splat Zones case, start one. It's the only Splatling that I'm good at using since it functions somewhat similarly to chargers. I've always gravitated towards being a midline/backline player, Brella being the only exception, so since Nautilus is sort of a mix between the two, it's perfect for me.

    Agree with the fact that anchors are arguably the hardest to play. I started out using dualies and being a slayer, since then I’ve turned into a heavy splatling user. And let me tell you it’s a completely different experience. Usually the frustration of being a slayer is that you kill all the enemies but your teammates are lagging behind, but with a backliner I’ve found that the problem mainly lies in the fact that sometimes your teammates are just not good at pushing, and all the enemy slayers surround you without the space you need. This is why I’m a hybrid anchor/support with heavy splatling remix on most maps tbh, it’s a good anchor but can also be a good support when you need it. Side note, I love when people think they can just swim up to splatlings when they’re charging and think they’re defenceless. Easy kills.

    @JonathanTash

    @@TheGameFlinger When you get into a rhythm with the Ballpoint Splatling, charging and releasing, you can maintain a steady ink output for a very long time. If you charge and release between full and three quarters of the second ring, you can cover a lot of turf, very quickly. It is then easy to switch to long range mode, by letting off until the first ring is almost depleted, and charging and releasing just below the three quarter mark.

Let's say your focusing on a team pushing and someone flanks behind to take you out. They are right next to you and the hydra takes a very long time to charge. Splashdown in this situation would serve as an escape for you to temporarily neutralize the threat. It all depends on the circumstance and situation though.

    If you want to bamboozle your opponents when you have your special (for normal and krak on roller) get close to your opponent then vertical fling and when your at your peak of your jump use your special. Works especially well with splashdown

    From my experience with the tri-slosher, I agree with the emphasis on slayer gameplay. However, with the "supportive attack" structure of the other sloshers, namely the vertical advantages and the ability to reach over low cover that would otherwise be more dangerous to approach, you often find yourself in the same positions as a support character (usually the high-ground). The sloshers are pretty defensive weapons, so it's much easier to kill by taking advantage of advancing enemies rather than advancing into enemy territory yourself, as you can often find positions where you can reach the enemy but the enemy can't reach you. The tri-slosher still remains a slayer weapon, as that added range makes it pretty good at evasion and preventing/slowing enemy movement, but it can also use support tactics by claiming the front lines as your own until your enemy's the one that's out of position. If you can't tell, I'm a big fan of the sloshers; I thought I'd pitch in with my take on my favorite one.

    I LOVE playing support with my dualie squelchers! I hardly ever get aggressive with them, I usually stay back away from people and pick off players from a distance. The dualie squelchers aren't supposed to be frontline weapons because they can't kill as quickly as other weapons. I take this into account when playing and use the range to my advantage and stay in the back. (Plus I usually lose 1 v 1's anyway haha)

    here are my tips for some good weapons with unfitting kits: *(im not a japanese player btw)* for the hydras, i recommend the original one because it’s good for defence if someone’s coming at you as a slayer, if you have your splashdown or autobombs ready. for the L-3’s, i recommend the D because of burst bombs: they have good hit boxes and can finish people off, and the inkjet is good for longer ranged rivals. as an n-zap user, the 89 is quite useful, if you’re passing someone who’s got more range and or damage, you can use tenta missles to lure them closer or somewhere else, or to track them down and if you’re already battling them you can quickly use the tenta missiles to get the extra damage.

    Great break down of all the weapons, I think I tend to fall under the Support\Anchors since I’m no good with one on ones! This makes me wanna try out more of the weapon classes since they might be a better play style! Least this practice might help when Splatoon 3 releases, gonna be so much fun!

    For me the Splat Roller (at least in turf war) is great for many things, I often keep in the backlines to protect turf while my teammates push, and camping is sometimes just how the weapon works. Weapons like this and other fast firing close range weapons are great for hunting foes trying to escape. Really good for applying pressure. I should really play more ranked games though as I want to do different playstyles with my weapons and further experiment with gear and abilities.

    I use the neo sploosh-o-match, mainly so I can stay alive, ink a lot of turf and super jump back to the home base to use my tenta-missiles if I start getting pressured while being able to kill enemies if they get close enough. If they use mid-range weapons, though, I'm screwed unless I can swim away, which I can usually can thanks to all the turf I've inked.

    If anyone mains dualies like me You can use them as support on Moray towers ranked by being able to pop the rainmaker alot faster in turret mode on top of the cliff at the middle of the map and also can hit ppl on the tower and ink splat zones And if you use clear dapples you can use torpedo as a mini point sensor for anyone who is close by

    Hey Wadsm, I recently stumbled on your content a few days back with the Fizzy Bomb video, and thanks to KZread recommends I've been checking out other videos like "How To Become Good" and "Advanced Techniques & Tips (Ultimate Overview)". Despite playing stick, I've managed to crack S+2 Splat Zones in just a few days' time, and learning about things like sub-strafing is really helping me to elevate my game. Your content's been some of the most comprehensive and friendly advice I've seen for any game in general, and since I've recently made a push to try and break into Rank X a couple weeks ago, I only thought it fair to go ahead and subscribe. I had a question that came up from this video and from "How To Become Good" where you talk about really knowing your weapon type or your team role. Usually I tend to favor close-range options like the Carbon Roller, Splattershot Jr., and Sploosh-O-Matic, favoring the ability to score kills and charge specials incredibly quickly. However I've recently fallen in love with the Bloblobber despite its stark contrast to my usual weapons. There's just something so satisfying about its projectiles bouncing around corners and off walls; I'd probably use the thing even if they nerfed it to the ground and made it only deal 10 damage a pellet. I'd like to ask you (or anyone else in the comments) for advice with Bloblobber, like good gear builds for the weapon or ways to better take advantage of its unique qualities... but also other weapons with similar "feel" to the Bloblobber so I can get better familiarized with that type of playstyle and role. My gut instinct is still to rush into danger to swing bubbles everywhere, which probably isn't the best idea most of the time. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

    First of all thanks for the compliments! Secondly since I played a fair amount of Bloblobber I can recommend Main Saver, Ink Recovery Up, Thermal Ink, perhaps some Swim Speed/Stealth Jump/Object Shredder depending on personal preferences. Unfortunately there's not really a similiar weapon to Bloblobber which I could recommend you to look into as well since it's a pretty unique weapon. It's a space control weapon which should be played like that, being a bit more defensive in a mid to back line position. It's important to abuse it's unique tools being it's projectile based bubbles to shut down space and to inflict damage on opponent making it easier for your frontline to kill them. It''s also amazing so secure und create space with it's special and kit. Hope that can help!

    Good guide. Thought I could add some more information to those curious about Flingza as they are the weapons I main. Flingza is a support - slayer hybrid but should primarily play support. The flingza is surprisingly one of the best painting weapons in the game. It can paint a zone with 1 or 2 vertical flicks (depending on zone size) which takes about 3-4 seconds. additionally it has one of the fastest charging specials in the game especially with the insane painting. I typically can get 5-6 bomb rushes in a game without much difficulty. as a general play style I favour staying back/mid and painting the map to assist the slayers. then, once map control has been established, you can use the mobility of the well painted area to get close and support your slayers with horizontal flicks for quick damage. alternatively if you cannot approach use the vertical flicks to maintain the space and stop weapons like luna, sploosh, clash and splatershots getting too close. I would recommend playing the vanilla (wall, bomb rush) on zones and sometimes rainmaker (map dependant) while playing the foil (suction, missiles) on tower, clam and sometimes rainmaker but of course there are exceptions eg the vanilla is great on very open maps where bomb rush is really effective. In terms of gear, ink saver main/recovery are must haves as well as the usual swim speed which most weapons benefit from. special charge, tenacity and special saver are all really good too. If you are playing foil it can also be worth running lots of sub saver, especially in tower control as suction bombs are just great on tower, if you want to go for a sub spamming kinda play style. your main counters are chargers and blasters with range as you can be very stationary when painting. A good sniper can pick a flingza quite easily so it is important to know where the high range enemies are and flick when the can't see you or are distracted. Flingza is definately not a meta pick but it can be good to mess with enemies who don't know how to deal with it, especially in zones. And most importantly, It is a ton of fun to play XD Thanks for reading

    My playstyle varies depending on what mode. My favourite weapon is the Sorella Brella, and in turf wars I play like an anchor. I believe that if you can control the centre of the stage, you get a guaranteed victory, so I stay behind and splat anyone who sneaks past the frontline, and re-cover any turf they laid down. In ranked however, I become a slayer, shielding objectives when I need to but mainly splatting people who try to take them back.
