That was absolutely amazing. When Mr. Thompson was going through his demo I felt like I was listening to a Mission Impossible movie. Just epic! If a movie was ever made about Mr. Thompson they should use Zach Galifianakis to play him. Excellent video and great interview.

This was absolutely fascinating, it went by so fast. I'm just a basement hack and I have dabbled with some of the LABS stuff but to watch someone who really knows how to score and use these kinds of samples explain the rationale behind it all was very enlightening. Thank you Warren and Paul! Thank you to Spitfire Audio for their generosity in continuing to make LABS available to us all.

Eh, if you play one note in isolation it sounds okay, but because of the lack of dynamics, round robins, legato transitions, and you know - _stretching one sample all the way across the keyboard_ it sounds pretty terrible for any more realistic arrangements.
Always a fan of their libraries, but confused as well when I would follow along over the years as these were developed. Some things were free, but then again a lot of things weren’t. Reading your comment sections helps me understand the reason. Always thankful for your contributions to our community Warren. You are really the one guy I really trust. You have helped me more than any single person. Couldn’t thank you enough!! THANK YOU!

The thing about theory or any education is to learn it so well that it becomes internalized. Then when you are in the actual act of composing you don’t think, you just create. The same way that an improviser learns the musical language they want to improvise in by slow and careful practice/study. Then when improvising you just create.
@Producelikeapro
8 ай бұрын
Indeed. Here’s an interesting argument that scholars pose, Mozart and Beethoven’s level of theory was a fraction of what is being taught to a modern music student. Who created the better music? Food for thought.
@PeteCalandra
8 ай бұрын
That's true Warren but seeing as tonal music had just been codified towards the end of Bach's life, there wasn't as much theory to learn. We have had 200 years of development since then. That being said, try to write the species counterpoint exercises that Mozart and Beethoven were taught for some brain bending study. @@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro
8 ай бұрын
I've worked from the Mozart/Thomas Attwood counterpoint exercises@@PeteCalandra ultimately we are taught a huge amount more and understand a huge amount more, that hasn't increased the quality of the writing. Inspiration first, melody first, learning is wonderful, I love it, however we shouldn't hide behind the cleverness that it provides.

Warren in the last you said c sharp and d flat are different notes what does that mean?
@Bring_MeSunshine
8 ай бұрын
In the days before 'equal temperament', they were different notes with differing pitches. I think 19 was the octave total. On a fretless instrument (violin, cello etc) , you can still achieve endless pitch variation between two adjacent notes, but on the piano, there are only 12 steps/octave, and the older C# and Db were subsumed into one labelled pitch for both notes.
@gregrodrigueziii8075
8 ай бұрын
Plus as already mentioned in the comment, the sharp or flat actually give you context what is being played. so its also informs musician on what context the note is used to simplfy it.
