Spiritual Depression in the Psalms - John Piper

Psalm 42
To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah.
As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. I say to God, my rock: "Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" As with a deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me all the day long, "Where is your God?"
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

    Depression led me to salvation and although it may never truly cease in this life, my love for Christ remains strong! Driving force is always the will, not emotions.

    10 years after and it's even more relevant. Thanks God for all the pastors on KZread that took time to talk about depression. Most Pastors don't talk about this subject. Whoever you are, don't give up. We can do it! 💪🏼

    Powerful message! Just what I needed to hear. I think many Christians sometimes believe that they are being punished for some sin they've committed when they have gone through a time such as described in the video or by any of the psalmists (which I can presently relate to). I can see now that the Lord intends for us to be completely AT-ONE with Him.

    No book can heal you,,, main reason for me going through depression is, was sin....For sin seperates us from God...

  • @boughtbythecross

    @boughtbythecross

    6 жыл бұрын

    sydneyhyoung yes, for one who rejects Jesus Christ their sin separates them from God. For the one who believes and has been regenerated nothing can separate them from the love of God. It can cause distance in the relationship until it is confessed. Depression can be caused by sin but not always. Our heart is deceitful and cannot be trusted, in other words our feelings lie to us. The best thing to do, unless one knows they have sinned, is to pray as the psalmist says, search me O God and see if there is any sinful way in me. When we are aware of our sin we do as the apostle John said and confess it, and know that God will forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Grace and peace...

    If God is willing to endure the consequences and face them. If God wills to help me endure the pain of shame and guilt and regret. If God wills. Since everything is as a result of my own disobedience I am not sure God helps people who caused their own misery because of their sins. This pslam is for people who are facing external difficulties not self made let alone birthed by sin.

    Cling to Christ cry and crawl if you have to. Don’t believe Satan or his army. God loves you. Quickly find a godly church and have them pray for you. I once had a spirit try to say I was it’s and will always be but that is a lie. Don’t fear even when you fill it. If you feel like you have to sleep with the lights on try your best to turn them off. If you believe that you can’t wash your face or hair because you can’t close your eyes do it anyways and cry out to Jesus. If you don’t feel anything that is fine keep running after God. Don’t let the enemy confuse you. Don’t let him isolate you causing small issues with believers to keep you isolated. Read the Bible as much as possible even when sleeping. Play worship music as much as possible and listen to sound doctrine preaching as much as possible. Fast and pray. Don’t give up. Please don’t give up. Don’t let perceived silence cause you to doubt. Overcome but the blood of Christ and the Holy Spirit in Jesus name. I speak freedom in Jesus name. Read Romans 6, 7,8 consistently. Run after Jesus and when it fills the worst cry out to Jesus.

    Why are you cast down O my soul, why are you in turmoil? This verse is repeated in a few other psalms close to this one... so it's a repeated theme and the psalmist's suffering did not end at once...

    Is there a difference between clinical depression and spiritual depression? Is medication necessary? How about psycho therapy? Or Christian counselling? Is depression from the devil?

  • @steveareeno65

    @steveareeno65

    Jacqueline Lai I have heard John say in another sermon that some depression, such as chronic depression, can require medical treatment. I think he is more addressing situational depression here, although I think with chronic depression a believer should do their best to follow the example in Psalm 42 in conjunction with medical care. As for depression coming from Satan, I am sure he is a major source, along with our own flesh (old man). Satan is the father of lies and he certainly would use our depression against us every chance he could get. That doesn't mean that all depression is a result of willful, unrepented sin, though. I am sure Job was quite depressed considering his circumstances.
