In today's tasting Wine-Searcher's Wine Director takes a break from wine reviews to look at an artesanal Mezcal from Oaxaca, Alipus 'San Luis' Mezcal Joven.
N.B. at about 2:48 David states that San Luis del Rio is 800ft above sea level, what he should have said was it is 8000ft above sea level - apologies for the confusion.
The Alipus brand was created by the Los Danzantes distillery to help provide a market for family artisan distilleries. There are still hundreds of these small Mezcal distilleries in Oaxaca, with many making fabulous products. Initially Hector Vasquez and later Karina Abad Rojas have worked closely with selected small producers, both to improve their distillation techniques and to help them with the complex bureaucracy required to certify their small-batch produced Mezcals for export.
This particular bottling was distilled by Dom Balthazar Cruz Gomez and is bottle number 1250 of 206
