Spirits In The Material World - WHERE'S THE F-ing BEAT?!?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
"Spirits In The Material World" by The Police almost seems like it was designed to throw people off, causing a true WTF moment when the chorus kicks in...but worry not! If you're one of the many musicians who have been derailed by this cruel rhythmic witchcraft, Brandon Ethridge and Richie Castellano are here to help! Once you watch this video, you will forever be able to safely navigate this intro and you will know exactly where the F-ing beat is.

I'd pay money for these two to demo the beat during the ENTIRE song.
There’s a video of Stewart Copeland saying that this song is most definitely the most difficult for the three band members to play. When a percussionist of his skill is saying that, you know that fucking beat is hard to find.
The bass line and synthesizer riff from this song is so unique and haunting, one of my favorite songs from The Police.🎵
Dudes, THANK YOU. I can't even tell you how many years this song has pretzeled my brain. I just couldn't hear the "1" in the proper place for some reason, and every time I would get to the chorus, I would always be ahead of Stewart's snare hit. I got the fact that there is no "1" for the drums, and I knew that the keys started on the "and" of 2, but I would still get confused. Thanks to you guys, I discovered that it was me hearing the freakin BASS part wrong that was screwing up my ability to lock into the timing of this song. Just listened to it again after I watched this video, and it's like the whole thing UNLOCKED for me. Unreal...thank you!!!!
Great breakdown. This song still messes with my head some 40 years later. I think they increased the volume on the “ska” keyboard chords just to aggravate listeners like myself!

me too. for 40 years.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! This has vexxed me for years! And though it will take some time for me to get my head wrapped around what you two did, I know have a firm foundation of what the f- I'm listening to! Thank you so much for this!
Love this... You need to do a whole series of videos. There are loads of tracks that are awkward, like Start me Up by the Strollin Bones
Eye-openingly helpful ... and hilarious too. Y'all rock!
My brain is incapable of hearing this correctly. Every time I hear the song on the radio, I try. I try HARD. But I can't hear anything other than the keyboard on the F-ing beat. I hate it!!!!

Dude. Same here. My entire life. I’m with you lol

Me too. But how about the last verse which has an additional synth riff that strongly suggests the correct placement of the beat? I'm fine then.

@@shields765 Yep - I can pick it up there - that helps a lot. But if I lose concentration for a split second, brain goes right back to the wrong way. ARGGG

Right? Especially if I find it and it's already started. I *KNOW* during the verses that the kick drum is where the snare usually is. I still can't match things up in my head.

SAME! And for years I've known the chord stabs are on the upbeats, reggae style, yet I can't hear it right! So crazy!
This is the best f-ing series, thank you so f-ing much.
Christ, I can't stop my brain turning the keyboard into the downbeat and screwing me up while I sing along
What a cool video. I've always thought about this song and had just been always flabbergasted by it.
Fantastic! this is a great idea, no one else is doing this
You just turned my world upside down! I always felt the upbeats but had trouble when the chorus was about to enter...it just seemed off. I am still confused but that is due to just having to readjust.
Thanx a lot. It’s about 40 years I cannot sleep for this 😛
Brilliant!
You guys are the best! XD! Can't wait for more Band Geeks vids!
I love that song! What sound do you use, Richie? Does anyone know the sound used? If so, please tell me. I have a Yamaha portable DGX-640, so I might not have the exact sound.
Please do one for Just What I Needed (the Cars) so everyone knows the first hit is on 4 (not 1). Thanks... :-)
Can you please tell me how to play that on keyboard? I really want to know and that sounded really awesome and on point! Or if anyone knows?
Have a good song for your segment. Who Knows by Hendrix and the band of gypsys. Tricky timing on the intro and opening vocals
A really tricky song, but lovely...
Not a clue musically...but I was always kinda puzzled by the construction of this song. And never saw the Police video until last night....with the visuals, I thought I was having a bit of a stroke. Nice to know it really IS an odd structure.
This was amazing haha It was always hard for me to find the “1” on this song. The brain is a weird thing🥴
Please, can you do the whole song?
Great video. I have no idea why Stewart Copeland says this is challenging to play? It is simply on the off-beat!

Just that simple huh?

@@Mastertech360 Well not that simple, but I don't think it is that hard either.
Do bring on the night, pleeeease!!!!
Hey guys, Bravo! And what about King of Pain? ;-) The first snare shot is.... 0_o?

For KoP, count the beginning in straight 4/4. Then as Sting’s vocal ends on “pain” around beat 3, finish that measure, then count an additional measure of 4/4 rest. Then count a measure of 2/4 and Stewart’s snare comes in on the *and of 2*. From there out, it’s just 4/4 and standard backbeats on 2 and 4.
Awesome. Do Murder By Numbers next.
Stewart Copeland himself says it's a very simple song but the beat is on the upside down on the back of nowhere.
Ive been hearing the first chord of the synth on the 1st beat for like 40 fkn years. Now i can hear the way i was supposed to hear it. This is really strange to hear
What sound are the keys set too?
Close but no cigar. You have to think up-tempo reggae swing and play faster.
Why won't it let me like this twice?
😂😂 This is my favorite Police song!
This. Is. Exactly. What I was after. You f------ legends.
The bass is not played that way until later. This is more like the demo version.
Y’all need to redo this and put the bass drum beat in there
F yeah! That is the damn beat!!
Ha! Great
Hey, I'm no drummer, but of course there's "a one", duh, it's just in his head!
Sorry, but the bass is a bit off at the end. The last note of the bass lick is exactly ON the beat. It seems like the RIchie is skipping a note and ending slightly early
My brain hurts trying to figure out the beat😅
F yeah
I think if you listen to punk ska or reggae this is an easy one lol
