Former stage actor and big theater buff here: it was probably one of the best stage productions I've seen in my life. The director, Tony and Olivier Award-winning John Caird, is most famous for the most well-known staging of Les Misérables. He has an incredible way of capturing intimacy within spectacle. And he totally nailed it with this production. The train across the spirit countryside was breathtaking. And the puppetry was phenomenal - Toby Olié did a fantastic job (almost as well as he did with War Horse).

Watched this today, loved it. Btw, Noface is called Kaonashi in the film which is just Japanese for “no face.”

I just saw it tonight and really liked the dance No Face performed. It made me feel like he is struggling with his loneliness and trying to get out of his shell.

Saw this last night. It took me about 15 mins to stop comparing the film to the stage show. After that I started to enjoy it more. I actually think Yubaba stood out as the strongest performance of all the actors. Amazing job. Chihiro was good too, but obviously a young adult playing a girl. Lin was cute and sassy just like in the film. No complaints. No Face was portrayed well. He got that strange dance to show how he was otherworldly even in the Spirit World. That was my interpretation. They tried to do more with Kamaji. He became a comic relief character. He seemed the most out of character compared to the movie. It wasn’t a problem, but was a notable difference. Haku was there, but seemed less intricate. He comes across a bit weaker than in the film. I like how they handled the train ride scene. Interesting choice considering it was a stage show. The three headed character was handled well and interesting. I wondered how they would pull it off. The one character I wish had more stage time was the baby called Ba. A lady played him wearing a costume. It looked good and she did a great voice. Funny. More Ba would have hit the spot. Overall a fun watch and a good show. Worth seeing if you’re at all interested in Spirited Away. Seeing the Japanese portray their work on stage was well worth the time. 👍
