Bloody fucking hell. That decision to switch to screaming during the high part at the end was one of the best things that has happened in music. Emotion over 9000.

it was brutal yes, but the highs add more intensity for me personally. It's the same with Jinjer's pisces, where tatiana does the "searching for a hook to catch on, and see their sun beam" with a high voice on the video but growls it live (the album has both overlayed onto each other, but i prefer only highs)
@DiStickStoffMono0xid

@@d00mnoodle i get what you're saying, it's probably personal preference. i really love this song, doesn't matter if this version or the album version. i don't even favour this version because its more brutal but rather because the screams just carry much more emotion for me.. but again, personal preference. i think i remember an interview with tatiana where she's saying she's screaming the high part live because she's afraid to mess it up and thus prefers to stay in her safe zone. i mean i get that, but i'd love her to do that high part in pisces live :D

I've just recently been introduced to Spiritbox. I don't normally listen to anything from any genre labeled *"core"... Spiritbox has made themselves the exception. That's mostly because of Courtney LaPlante's INCREDIBLE vocals. The way she ended this... I listened to a lot of videos here at first. Then, same day, I dropped the funds for their entire discography on Bandcamp. I heard the album version of this track a couple of times and I kept thinking... "That's not how it's supposed to end. I thought she screamed half of the words at the end?" Then I realized that this was NOT a video of the album recording and that this was unique to this video. But EVERYTHING from 3:30 on... I really honestly wish they had ended the album version with it. It's such a POWERFUL ending and it encompasses SO much anguish, disappointment and, in my interpretation of the lyrics, foreboding. It's just...SO fucking powerful. Well... Courtney's voice is the ONE thing that broke me and finally made me give in to trying to listen to some newer "Metal" with a more open mind... Just in case I've missed anything else that's even HALF as incredible as Spiritbox is. Just... Unbelievable. I hope that I might meet her one day to give her my humble thanks in person.

I think we need much more female vocalists who come out from under the rocks, great voices with a lot of potential. Especially Courtney she is mind blowing!
Iam a hip hop head and just started listening to Spiritbox a week ago and their the best band i ever heard and Courtney killed this one take i wonder if its this easy when they record their songs!
Something I don't see mentioned as much as the incredible technical ability and development that Courtney has is her lyricism. One of my favourite writers on paper, let alone colouring those lyrics with the level of performance we get treated to in these videos.Theres such duality between vulnerability and furious, righteous, raw outward emotion. There's a slew of music out there that sits at one side of the pendulum or the other, but there's spectrums in single songs with this band. And theres moments to me where the most vulnerable lyrics are delivered with hair raising aggression, and lines that are sung softly that are more cutting than any drop or breakdown. Beautiful and incredibly skillful writing.
@boogaethje6702

Well said. Her phrasing is incredibly dynamic, delicate, powerful and her shot selection is intelligent. Where to kick up the aggression to lift the segment. There’s provocative nuance to the lyrical content that is undeniably beautiful, tragic.

I mean, I like this version better because of the change in the last chorus, but how exactly is this any more “live” than what you hear on the record? The record was probably taking from 3-5 takes done exactly the same as this (again, apart from arrangement changes), with her “getting into it” just as much. I understand this argument when it’s talking about full band live, musicians do react differently when they’re playing with other musicians vs just listening to playback. I’d also understand if it’s in the context of a full set, where the fact that they’ve sung many songs and will keep singing more changes the approach entirely (arguably making the vocals more human). But the main different between these studio “one takes” and a recording is that a recording usually comes from the best from a few of these takes, but apart from that I don’t see much of a different in the situation the musicians are put into.
