Spirit -The Year Turns Around Again

Фильм және анимация

The music is from a play called War Horse, it's about a horse in world war I who gets sold to the army, various things happen and he ends up in no mans land where his previous owner finds him. i really want to go see this play sometime in the holiday, and i really love this song (if you watch the trailer for it it has the same song)
oh yeah i didn't have any clips of rain so she doesn't exsist in my video, if i did have the clips i would put her in somewhere.
yays seven subscribers!
Hope you enjoy it!
By the way, for those who have asked for them, because they can't seem to be found anywhere else i have tried to listen to the music and record what they are myself. some of them may not be completely accurate but at least i tried.
A wager, a hat full of guinnies,
against all their songs you can sing,
but some day you'll love
and the next day you'll lose
and winter will turn into spring
and the snow falls, the wind calls
the year turns round again
and like barley corn who rose from the grain (could be grave)
a new year will rise up again
and there will come a time of great plenty
a time of good harvest and son
till then put your trust in tomorrow my friend
for yesterdays over and gone
Ploughed, sown, weat (or weed) and mown
the year turns round again
and like barley corn who rose from the grain (could be grave)
a new year will rise up again
a feeling arise, a gleam in her eyes
and the year turns ound again
and like barley corn who rose from the grain (could be grave)
a new year will rise up again

I find a bittersweet hypnotic beauty to this work. I know the inevitable end, yet still cannot look away, and hope upon hopeful hope that this loving heart will find the love he fought, and survived for. I know the curse of the dreamer, all too well. “A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world." Oscar Wilde Bless you for not soiling it with an advertisement! Be Well, and Stay Strong, Will

I've been listening to this song over and over again for almost half an hour now. It is so beautiful! and of course, to make it more emotional, it reminds me of War Horse, how brilliant the play is, and the horrific and tragic history behind it!

**** And finally, it's "Phoebe arise, a gleam in her eyes". Phoebe is a female personification of the moon (paired with John Barleycorn's personification of barley and the harvest), and is again a reference to the harvest and the cycle of life represented in the play. I enjoyed your video very much, and was glad to be able to hear the whole song again. War Horse is hands down the most astonishing and affecting piece of theatre I've ever seen. I hope these lyric corrections are helpful.

This piece of music is on my all time favourites list. It is so haunting and so beautiful and John Tams sings it perfectly. It would be fabulous if Speilberg kept this song in the movie.

Notes on the lyrics: * It's "I'll wager a hat-full of guineas". A guinea is an old British coin ** It's "And like Barleycorn, who rose from the grave" John Barleycorn is an old British folk tale, involving death and resurrection, and it is a metaphor for the harvest, and making beer and ale from barley. *** It's "Plowed, sown, reaped and mown". This is again a reference to planting and harvest.

allright x) It's a bit hard to percieve sarcasm in a written text. And there is no need to be sarcastic. Wellwell, I've heard that the star of the county down is from the 19th century. =P but it doesn't matter. Star of the county down, kingsfold, dives and lazarus, if you could run to kolob or whatever, it is the same melody!

The First line in the Lyrics is: I'll wager a hat full of guinees (old english currency) John Barleycorn (legend) was a farm hand who was murdered and thrown onto the land. IT rained and he 'arose' from his grave. Phoebe is 'the moon'. Its reference has Wicca/Pagan origins. The 'old religion' in england followed gods and goddesses

  • @gaspode18
    @gaspode1812 жыл бұрын

Yes, I was being sarcastic - the tune of The Star of the County Down IS originally English and is, in fact, one of the tunes used for John Barleycorn. 20th century composer Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote a set of variations on it, though he called the tune 'Dives and Lazarus' (Another traditional song it is used for) It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that John Tames' deliberately wrote 'Snow Falls' to sound like 'John Barleycorn' as he mentions it in the lyrics.

""Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way." - Martin Luther King Jr Truth, and divine misery, reads the same, in all tongues, and across all times. The British lost 8 million horses during WW-1. The monument that stands to remember these noble beasts reads; "They Never Had The Choice...."

Reason why you would probably have difficulty in trying to find the lyrics to the song is because it's an adaptation of Tams' 'Snow Falls'... the lyrics are mostly the same but rearranged differently.

@XTaylorXSwift Sorry, also forgot to say that there has been a change of cast since War Horse was first on the West End. The original Song Man was Eyken himself, now it is Saul Rose. I'm not 100% if there was anyone in between but details can usually be found online as to when either of them were playing the role

  • @gaspode18
    @gaspode1812 жыл бұрын

It was written by John Tams for the National Theatre's 1980 production of 'Lark Rise to Candleford' (though this version MURDERS his tune) - You can find his version by searching on his name. There is, (I hope to God) no 'Broadway' arrangement of Snow Falls' that I know of (and if it exists PLEASE don't tell me. I don't want to know!). English folk is about it.

It has the same number of syllables per line - and that is the ONLY resemblance to Star of the County Down. The tune is original, written by John Tams. (though this version only bears a rough resemblance to the tune as he wrote it)

@XTaylorXSwift The 'Song Man' (as they call him in the show's programme) is not miming, his style is very similar to Eykens but there are notable differences, especially since his performance is live and therefore not as flawless as Eyken's on the soundtrack. Now the Song Man could change in performances but I believe the constant performer on the West End so far has been Saul Rose, a notable folk artist. However it might have been a different performer, it depends on the night

@6045310708 Assuming that you are talking about the War Horse movie, no it wasn't. The Play and the film are different things, despite the same story. And to your second question, probably not. It is rather hard to find music from the play on KZread, the only reason this video has 20,000 views is because you can't listen to this song anywhere else. Plus, as far as i know at the moment, the soundtrack for the play is only for the British production.
