We need to listen, to learn; we must start respecting the land and the wildlife or our species is doomed. Thank you for this tale.

Amen to that. We have all experienced the world in our own way, and hearing stories from other cultures helps us understand the world we live in so much more. I definitely would like to cover some dreamtime stories, although I’m sure it will take a lot of work to understand the aboriginal mindset. I’m working on an old English story now, but just know that I have a long, long list, so I will be happy to have you along for the journey :)

All of my life even when I was a little kid, I had a special connection with animals and I am so happy to learn here that it's a real native American people believe that animals are a mesinger for the spirit world and help you with your life here.....

In my experience, all of life is storied. Beetles etch runic scribbles on the underside of tree bark. Stones hold and remember the pressure and relief of ancient continental dramas. Fossils keep their secret clues buried under the soil. Ubiquitous patterns found on leaves, dragonfly wings, and tree rings hint at stories as old as time. I would suggest that humans are not unique in our pursuit of myth, rather we are a part of the great web of story, and we find our way amongst it just like every other creature. Thanks for this beautiful piece. :)

You reminded me of my late family cat. God bless her, if she’d one day sprouted wings and told us she was secretly an angel all along, none of us would’ve been surprised. She was the guardian of our home. Saved my life a few times with her nightly patrols. She was like a second mother to me and my sisters. Gosh, I miss her...

Much of Northern (Celtic, Slavic, Baltic, Germano-Nordic) European "Paganism" was in essence Animistic. We shared many similarities with Native Americans on many fronts. Not all, but many. And there are those of us who have been Pagan for all or most of our lives who are trying to bring animism back to the forefront on modern Pagan beliefs structure. Getting rid of the garbage spewed out by the LARPers who sit around watching Vikings on TV and/or try to push some christian style orderly orthodox upon the Old Ways.

When you look up to the sun, the moon, the trees, the natural beauty around us, the birds, the spider, and all beings, it becomes clear. We are all connected. We are symbiotic. We must cultivate these relationships. Give space to listen. Feel the beauty within all us creatures. This is where the world as we know it now feeds opportunity to grow goodness through our new found systems. Conquering greed and ego. We must connect to understand and move forward.

Thankfully a lot of these traditional stories are alive and well today. I highly recommend the book "Native American Myths and Legends" by Erdoes and Ortiz. PS, A new video on Native American mythology and religion is premiering tomorrow, so keep an eye out :)

It’s a beautiful journey! A lot of place names in the US are Native in origin, and especially if you’re in the west there are lots of Nations with cultural centers that are open to the public. Take a look at who first inhabited your area, and start discovering!

Thank you for the content ❤️ I’ve been really intrigued about Native American culture, a lot of my beliefs align with the Blackfoot tribe and I would like to learn more about the generalized culture, it’s good to keep the stories alive. Given that my people have massacred and silenced these people for hundreds of years!

There is no better time than now! I would definitely recommend doing some research, as most nations have museums and cultural centers that are open to the public. Suffering is tragic, but it strengthens cultural bonds, so you can find many people working to keep these traditions living. Best wishes :)

My land is full of spirits and Native history- I’ve been trying to find more information in Upstate NY... I never knew I had Shaman ancestry until I started reading about my interest in herbal medicine and I then learned my great grandmother was a Shaman- it explained so much... I have read about the Wolf clan having a secret ritual place in this area - I have seen and heard many things I can’t explain here... Last night I watched “wolves” come together and I feel there was more then a pack of wolves in that field. I have photos of eyes from something that has walked along side me in the woods after dark.. Where can I connect with my actual ancestors?? I have specific tribe info- But can never find more info..

I did a massive paper on the Iroquois in my Junior(? can't remember) year of college. From their founding to their breakup during the American Revolution. This video makes me wanna break out my paper and reread it haha. I wish I got to delve into the mythology more but I never did. It'll be on my to-do list now though

did your paper cover the intertribal genocides of the Beaver Wars? "As a result of this conflict, the Iroquois destroyed several confederacies and tribes through warfare: the Hurons or Wendat, Erie, Neutral, Wenro, Petun, Susquehannock, Mohican and northern Algonquins whom they defeated and dispersed, some fleeing to neighboring peoples and others assimilated, routed, or killed." I never learned of these things from any class or media program 😮😢 it's only the European colonialists that have the charge of genocide applied to them.... it shows that the subject of history has become so corrupted as to be propaganda not a record of humanities past. 💔

Thank you. There is a lot of sadness and tragedy that one can hardly imagine, but is all too real; the living cultures today should be treasured all the more so because of that. Resilience is amazing.

I bet you did alot of researching to find this I really liked watching it and listening your voice was calming sorry and being weird, learning more about our history I'm from ontario. Have a nice day. I wish I could listen to mr Peterson more I have to get past me being strange towards other people, voices sights sounds smells trigger me easily, I don't know why it's hard to deal with it but I manage. I myself have a hard time maintaining a steady tone in my voice it definitely effects how you fele the way you think and speak, but honestly I do cry for hope and I like listening to nature have a good day. That was very fascinating to know about the brwnt family adopting the Norton fellow and the twins was quite the thing to here about I did not know that. Peace

I’m very happy you enjoyed! It’s great to learn about where you’re from. A lot of Dr. Peterson’s work lately has become very divisive and political, but I am personally a fan of his lecture series on Psychological Symbolism in Biblical Stories. I definitely think he’s at his best when approaching traditional stories from his background as a psychologist. The Jesuit Relations are a fantastic read focusing on Canada, though maybe a bit more Quebec-focused than Ontario. And of course the best resource into these traditional stories is the First Nations themselves! Wishing you all the best, peace.

Mythos & logos I really enjoy learning about history and just good information in general, I wish i could listen tomr Peterson more, I think he would have a alot of good things that would helpme aswell, I might look at th reading you suggested I am always intrigued to learn things they won't tells about we have no idea like how youfound him saying he transalted to English just to share the wisdom because he knew it was special just like all of us are special, I got to meet a young war chief, when I told him of my illness he told me sometimes we don't realize that the thing we are burdened with can also maybe be our gift or, a superpower, I don't know what he meant but he seemed very wise and I felt like maybe he went through the same things I had went through in his own way too have a nice day dude thank you

I totally agree!!! I just had a run in with 2 Christians lashing out trying to help others (1 lashed out to me and the other on a Native American channel). I get their fears, but also see what they don't understand. It's hard for everyone. This channel had me subscribe by 1 intro statement on 1 video in less than 1:24 minutes! We learn and grow by having patience to understand. This channel is very refreshing in this chaotic society.

It really was...I've been trying my best to understand "true" animism, sadly, on my own. My ex-christian background, lack of local resources, and native teaching make it tough. This brought fresh insight to my own thoughts and a desire for more.

Christ told us we were all equal before God not Sepulveda. Those in authority and those under authority had rules of engagement with one another. Authority meant responsibility for those under them. Even in relation to sinners we are to love them since they are children of God as well. The Sermon on the Mount says more. Either way that's a beautiful creation story from the Iroquois. In my Catholic mind reads as a real love for God's creation. If only we could have the Natives see the Creator himself. If the Europeans had the same spirit as the Early Christians I'm convinced the Native Americans would've converted in a more peaceable way.

What a great way to engage with the story through the lens of your faith. A Christ-like example of love requires a very different approach to authority than many have taken.

The Scottish and Native American cultures seemed to have a lot in common, so maybe his adoption was not as strange as it first appears.

As an Irish American, I am really moved by the Irish-Choctaw gift exchange as another example of shared humanity. The Choctaw helped us during the Famine, even after they had just gone through the Trail of Tears, recognizing shared humanity across suffering people. And in modern times the Republic of Ireland has gifted much to the Choctaw. So yes, I totally agree, cultures even across an ocean can share a lot.

This is very similar to eastern mysticism, well Yoga itself means Union, everything is one, a person who has achieved union with the cosmos is called a Yogi

Mine is the wolf or the modern dog I feel

With all the differing belief systems it can really get overwhelming trying to find spirituality nowadays. I like animism as it highlights value in anything animate, or inanimate and connects us all . I think the native Americans had a great way of life. However I am torn with one notion, perhaps someone can help me out. If evolution is an important aspect of nature/physical survival, couldn’t it be said that those who worship animism fell short of evolution making them prey to more predacious beings? Is defence of one’s physical existence not important? Or is this the age old adage of as above so below where their humble disposition which allowed them to get overtaken, makes them more spiritually connected? Thanks 🙏

That’s a great question, thank you for sharing! My understanding is that, broadly speaking, traditional Native American beliefs tend to view humans and animals as equals, not in a predator/prey context. Nature is less of a fight for survival, and more of a series of beings sacrificing themselves for others. That said, while I am greatly inspired by many of Native American traditional beliefs, I can’t call myself a member of that tradition. But there are many viewers and commenters here who are, and might explain something better than I can :) Overall, my goal is to share stories that I find harmonious and inspiring, and I’m proud of any way that helps you on your own personal journey :) I’m glad this was useful for you!

For several years now, I've come to take comfort from seeing a heron fly overhead. At first, during a time of grief and stress, it inspired me as a creature which, ungainly but steady, perseveres to reach its destination. Hi. I am from Europe, from a christian country. I have never found myself agreeing with what the church told me about life. I have had ,since i was young, a close connection with nature (as wierd as it sounds, when I was a child, trees talked to me) so i wish to find books or anything that could help me understand more about this culture and beliefs. I have without realizing and subconsciously been following native beliefs for as long as I have been alive. I am young so I don't know how to make the distinguish between true Information and a lie. Wow, thank you for your kind words! What an exciting journey of discovery you are on! Native American traditions were mostly preserved through oral tradition, so you won’t find any written sources from before Columbus, but I would recommend going with Native sources whenever possible. No one knows the traditions better than the people who live them. If there is a particular Nation that interests you, I would recommend going to their website! Many have excellent cultural resources, and friendly people who would be happy to help you learn. “Native American Myths and Legends” by Erdoes and Ortiz is a great collection of stories taken from interviews with Native storytellers, that is a great collection of mythology (even if many stories are post-contact.) “The Sacred Wisdom of the Native Americans” by Larry Zimmerman is a great book as well, and goes more into cultural traditions, in addition to stories. Hi friend, A good comment is never a waste of time! This project is more about finding the more universal applications of these stories rather than about telling anyone what to believe. There are some who would say that there might be a message for you. There are others who would say that there are a lot of deer in the woods, and they tend to get spooked around people. Whichever of those groups you might fall into, I am mostly trying to communicate the importance of respect through this story, including the respect of the various Native cultures toward nature and the respect that the Christians like Las Casas and Le Jeune had for the Native beliefs. I recommend talking to someone close to you, maybe a priest or elder, who you respects and who respects you to help you answer any spiritual questions.

That sounds like a question for a priest or elder. But, I can help a little :) I like to think of Animism as being more of an adjective than a noun, where it can describe many different beliefs. Many Christians believe in praying for the souls of ancestors or holy people to help us, in a tradition called the Communion of Saints. The way that you might ask a very holy person in your life to pray for you, many Christians will ask a Saint or a family member they believe to be in Heaven to pray for them. That's somewhat similar to how many animists will ask for help from their ancestors or other spirits. An Anglican Christian Priest named Shawn Sanford Beck wrote a book called Christian Animism, in which he talks about how Christians can respect and honor the Earth. Well it is contradictory to Christian fundamentalist beliefs. Christianity and major religions are not very open as we know and they would certainly label it as occult belief and demonize it. It is a requirement. If someone does not believe in animism they are not Christian. That is clear in the Bible. One undisputable example is the rock that Moses was supposed to speak to, and ask if for water. Instead Moses hit the rock and broke it and took from without asking. God punished Moses for this. Even Abraham and Isaac taught us that a rams life is worth a humans life... Jesus taught us about sparrows, fish, sheep, lilies, spirits, moving mountains, the Holy Spirit.

Orthodox Christians have very strong love for nature and value of plants and animals. Stories of their "saints". Even the catholic church, which is not Christianity, they have some respect for nature, they just seem to be misguided and corrupt or under hostile control. They still have reports of people encountering "our lady" and giving them messages that we need to repent and care for all creation or we are doomed. It is just because individual people are lost. Even if they go to church and say they are christians... Not all who say "Lord, Lord"! shall enter the kingdom of Heaven

Using a stone or poking with a stick is a far cry from smelting metal from ore and making a hunting rifle-it's the level of sophistication. Animals don't manufacture clothing from plants and other animals. A lion doesn't wear a an antelope leather jacket because it looks cool. There are many differences.

@@alive4321 Fascinating! I definitely recommend the Southwest US in general - New Mexico and Arizona especially have plenty of amazing sites. Check out the Facebook groups "Petroglyphs, Pictographs, and Rock Art of North America" and "In-Sites: Pre-Columbian architecture of the Americas". I see you're interested in comparative mythology, especially Biblical connections. I think you would be absolutely fascinated by some of the Papago; the old Jesuit Mission San Xavier del Bac outside Tucson, Arizona has a collection of their stories which bear some absolutely striking parallels to Biblical themes. (Of course, considering they were written by Christian missionaries describing the original stories means that a healthy dose of questioning how much is historical and how much is added is a good idea.) The recorded version of the Papago Origin Myth in the mission's museum actually contains a similar creation to Genesis, a flood myth (as most cultures do, but especially interesting in the Arizona desert) and even a story of a rejected Messiah-like figure. I can't find the version recorded there exactly online, but it might be worth giving the mission a call.

We don’t see it as mythology. We view American history as mythology tho. But they tell us that, let them believe what they believe. But animism is the main factor that we wanted to form with the people from a different land so that a prophesied great nation would become United. But there was also a bad outcome. Thanks for sharing. Please know that I use the word myth in the traditional sense meaning “symbolic story” not the modern sense of “untruth.” I also include stories from my own faith background under the “mythology” label. No matter how bad things may be, I am still hopeful that we can learn from this wisdom and make a change.

I think it’d be more the wise to refrain from referring this philosophy as Mythological. It isn’t myth. Nature & all its gifts - the animals all have traits we can observe as similar to ours or to use these traits when discerning our path, our ppl & mostly our spirit & character in order to better reflect from Light.

Thank you for your comment! That is a very important clarification, and it's clear that you have a very strong understanding of how stories work in many traditional societies. In our modern culture, we often think that "myth" means "lie," but a more accurate historical translation would be "story." When we mix that with the "logos," a Greek word literally meaning "word," but more deeply meaning something along the lines of "meaning," or "pattern of reality," we come to an understanding of the word "mythology" that is more in line with that of traditional cultures, "stories that communicate the meaning and patterns of life." You said this beautifully as well, seeing the reflections of everything in every other. I'm hopeful that many more will pick up that understanding

I feel like you’re coming from a place of respect, and I appreciate that a lot. And I earnestly thank you for sharing criticism in a respectful way. I’m not sure if he has changed or is maybe just showing more true colors, but lately I have definitely noticed that he has been far angrier than the psychology professor whose lectures opened up much of the Jungian world to me. I don’t believe in taking down or editing my old work, but since this was an earlier video for me, I think that I may have felt the need to quote some “authority” for backup. While some of Peterson’s psychological lectures have definitely been an inspiration, I’ve been working on leaning more on primary sources and my thoughts than others, and I definitely feel comfortable saying that Peterson should follow a bit more of his own advice in terms of listening to and respecting others.

I’m sorry to hear that, though I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed the rest. I think that Peterson is quite gifted when it comes understanding symbolism and psychology in stories; but when it comes to politics and sociology, I am absolutely open to the idea that he might benefit from following his own advice. It’s difficult to separate good ideas from the often very messy realities of people, and I’m quite sorry to hear that it soured the rest of the video for you. Please understand that that wasn’t my intention, and that I will do better going forward to keep the classical and modern worlds separate, as making an “appeal to authority” to a leading modern thinker seems to have proven, at least in your case, to be more distracting than helpful. I earnestly thank you for sharing your thoughts. Every bit of feedback truly does help, with challenging comments made in good faith often being the most useful. Thank you for that.
