Spiral Ring Cup! I Almost Gave Up!

This was a tough one! I wanted to do a few rings at least so you can see me plan out enough space to carve 4 comfortably. I did the first two with no problems as I'm used to turning normal toroidal captive rings (although I did resize them midway through). However, like my chip goblet, I wanted to incorporate at least one into the base. Problem is, when I started doing that, I didn't expect to break 2 rings in the process. By the time I'd gotten to the base, it was a little bit smaller than I'd wanted and I was admittedly frustrated. But of course, being a stubborn woodworker, I realized I had space for a third attempt... and if I screwed it up, it would ruin the look of the whole cup. So, I made sure I didn't fail!!!
For Woodworkers:
This was turned from more of the spalted maple I've had. While it was a bit frustrating, I had fun in the end. No sudden cracks or wood abnormalities appeared so it was mostly smooth sailing. The spiral was cut using a Dremel and several carving tips. The first one I tried burned too much and didn't cut well, so I tried another. Obviously it worked out, but most of my time was spent sanding. All parts of the cup were sanded to 320 grit. The outside was finished with several clear coats of poly, and the inside was finished with walnut oil.
Video:
All video was shot on a Canon Powershot S110. Photos were taken on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Thumbnail and some text edited in Photoshop. The project was completed in HitFilm.

As always, Details are in the video description. I always say, if you can't pose your captive rings, why are they there? What's your favorite pose? Mine is when all three are balanced together! Let me know!

Haha, i made my first captive ring on a cherry vase a couple of weeks ago. Gave it to my wife as a gift. She took one look at the ring... "What's that for?" :its a captive ring. "Oh. What does it do?" :It doesn't do anything. Its ornamental👀 "Ahh, ok. Thanks" The vase now lives by the front door, with its ring lay flat. Think ill just keep the next one 🤣

I'm sorry for your loss. 🤣🤣 I made my partner one that's basically just a fidget toy. It has two captive rings and she can rattle it around for fun... She prefers trying to break the rings I make her 😂
