Zack Snyder released a new zombie movie, Saw is back and there is a new Spider Man movie with Alfred Molina as Doc Ock. Yep, 2004 again.

I actually liked this movie the best of the franchise. I liked the political commentary about police corruption and found it to be the most intellectually stimulating of the series. The biggest flaw with the film is that it is helmed by a director who is more concerned with delivering a straightforward Saw movie rather than offering up a film that is a passing of the torch with the content of the series.

Yes! I agree with others here. That thumbnail is fantastic! Thanks as always for your insights, Dan!
You know what this movie could have used? An extra 15 minutes of exposition and an extra minutes for each trap.
I couldn't get over Samuel L Jackson wearing a poorly fake mustache in the past scenes
As a big fan of all the 7 Saw movies. And someone who actually liked Jigsaw. I just want a proper ending, some kind of "Saw Game Over" just put all the John Kramer successors together and let them have their last game! And stop the suffering of this franchisse.
@robertnewett5932

As a huge fan of all the saw movies as well, i just want all the lingering plot holes about the true successor answered. Logan Nelson, Dr. Gordon and even Hoffman (if survived) are still 3 giant question marks. We had a conclusion after 7, but 8 opened up more new questions, and now with William Schenk as another new killer its just a complete mess. Who trained him in the ways of complex engineering on torture devices. Is he tied to any of the other Jigsaw successors? No questioned were answered. Very frustrating.

It was good. I'd put it a number 4 behind the first 3. Way better then the last movie. I'm interested to see where a sequel would go.

It is a good movie imo the twist was kinda obvious however me personally did not see it coming the traps are much more gruesome and the sacrifice to escape and the investigation piece was good I did enjoy it
Hope this gets a direct sequel with Chris Rock 🔥🔥🔥
Word is that James wan and atomic monster productions are involved in the development of the 10th installment. Wan and whannel once said in an interview at the saw 3d final chapter premiere they would only return to the franchise if they were allowed do something different. Fingers crossed after jigsaw and spiral...third times a charm!
might be more successful if they did it as streaming as well. I'm surprised our local theaters are still open but not running.
I've had a few days to digest this film, and as a big Saw fan and a big fan of police thrillers, I have to say that it's a HUGE disappointment in so many ways. I don't even really 100% believe the story of Chris Rock being a huge Saw fan and pitching an original story. I think it's more that he had an idea for a police thriller, and someone at the Lions Gate thought that with a few tweaks it could be turned into a Saw-esque film or spinoff. The killer reveal (can't even call it a twist, really) was lazy and unbelievably telegraphed. I seriously can't believe they looked at one important sequence in the film that's tied to the reveal and think, "Yep, this is good. Gives absolutely nothing away." I wanted to like it, and still want to. I'm Phantom Menacing it. But the more I think about and discuss it, the more I dislike it.
I need you to review Supernova! Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci do an amazing job in it!
This was my first time back at a theater. As a fan of these movies, it was fine-ish. The best part about it is the fact it exists. It’s a mediocre execution of a neat idea. Cool to see it with an audience though.
I was dissspointed overall. I had such high high high hopes (for some reason lol) and it just kinda let me down.. But if you go in with the right expectations I do actually think this is a solid film with a surprising amount to say about police corruption and protecting those around us even when we maybe shouldn't. I found a lot of weight in some of the themes there even if overall I thought it was too predictable and didn't feel like a Saw film

@@chriscorben-green2640 I'm on the fence. I find them to be about on par in terms of how much I enjoyed them. Spiral had better cinematography and looked the best out of the whole series.. but the writing in my opinion wasn't as good when it came to twists and reveals. It had good character work though with probably the best protagonist of the whole series.. basically I have mixed feelings and it's hit and miss in a lot of ways
I like more Saw movies than I don't and this was actually my favourite of the franchise. My sister is a huge fan and she didn't like it too much, so I've heard real differing opinions.

I've been curious what you'd think about this movie.
The Best thing of this movie was Dan's intro of Google
That thumbnail was all of the review I needed. I only watched the video to confirm I had interpreted it correctly. My interpretation was, "All this movie has to offer is grossness." Having watched the video, I would add, "...and Sam Jackson."
Finally watch it i seen almost all & this is top 3. Only problem i had is first 1/3 was bad & we need 10-20min of character development just to slow down a bit other than those it was fun.
Saw (franchise) has no more steam and life in it anymore, and I especially don’t think will get another one for a long time after this failed revival which would probably be 30 years max and 10 years minimum.

Too bad, I would've loved to hear that this movie did well with some new faces in the franchise, seeing if Chris Rock can pull off the role and to see a more, mmmm, Seven approach to the franchise. BUT, as soon as Dan said Spiral was written by the same guys that made the last couple of saw movies, my expectations dropped like CorpseHusband's voice in middle school.
6:48 big Roger Ebert energy here.
I picked the killer from the trailer. I wish the reveal wasn’t so obvious. But I also like that they give the killer a timely motive. It feels like a lot of lead up to what could be next, which could be extremely interesting. Chris Rock was great. I disagree with people who are saying he was not good. He was great.
I watched the first Saw and liked it. Then I heard there would be a sequel. I may have seen one or two of those sequels ... and by seen I mean tolerated while playing WoW or something. But in my mind all those follow-ups have done is pulling the first movie down with them.
One of the few among your releases I wasn't interested in UNTIL... Chris Ramsay let us all know he's in this movie! TOO COOL, can't love that more, a Canadian KZreadr randomly asked to be in a big horror movie :D
I have no intention of going anywhere near this or any other Saw movie---but I'll click on this so that Dan can spend more time reviewing better stuff!

Oh, and I think I had about 7 to 10 people in my theater.
I'm a chicken and won't watch the movie as I haven't watched any of the others in the franchise. I will however watch a bunch of the reviews because they remind of when the movie was announced and Michael Che joked that it was gonna be called Seent lol
It was way better than Jigsaw and was decent. I would put it in the middle of the pack of the saw movies. They spent less time with the traps, less time retconning the backstory to add in helpers
This sounds a lot like The Bone Collector.

Call me “Narcissist!” but I was expecting thus to be about my galaxy, which is a spiral. This movie doesn’t sound anything like a spiral.
I don’t know what movie you saw Dan. This movie was good. Chris rock acting was great as well. You definitely downplay a lot about this movie A LOT. It was definitely a rejuvenation of the saw series. I think you need to go watch it one more time. If I was a movie goer that listened to this review I would be a little disappointed with you. Not saying this movie deserves an Oscar. Definitely not saying that , but this movie is better than most in this franchise.

I love the flick ….it hit home for me as an average guy ….Chris rock was the perfect casting or Adam Sandler perhaps ….this movie did not need some action Jackson junky ……it was made for us regular people to be put in Chris rock predicament
I totally agree. The script is lackluster. The traps are meh. But the worst part is how they do exposition. The first few minutes of the movie is just the main character talking to people and spewing exposition about what happened in the past, why things are the way it is and what kind of person he has become because of it. But at the same time, they also have these flashback scenes that say the same thing. It's redundant, unnecessary and it makes me hate the main character. SHOW, DON'T TELL. They could have cut all the speeches from MC and show the other cops openly despise him, or talk behind his back, or give him angry glares or something. MC doesn't have to rehash the past so that the audience can catch up. They can even use the "new cop" character to ask what the glaring and hate was about. And he could say "Don't ever snitch on your fellow officer if you don't want to end up like me." Then DONE. This is a bad approach, but still vastly better than the "exposition vomit for few minutes straight" route they took.
Neve will I even consider watching this, but I want to hear your review anyways 😂
Getting older now, I find I have less tolerance for these types of torture porn horror movies. I just don’t see the appeal of them anymore. 🤷♂️. And I don’t buy Chris Rock as a police detective. Wasn’t he one in the last Lethal Weapon movie?
Unless they've set this movie in the 70s or 80s, seeing Chris Rock (see here around 3:00) using a revolver seems REALLY out of place. Unless there's a really compelling story reason for it, it's just odd. Cops have used semi-auto pistols rather than revolvers as a standard for about 40 years now.

There's a reason for it in the movie.
I liked that they intended to try something different but the screenwriters and director weren't super equipped to do anything clever with it. It just feels outdated, like it was made in 2006.

The issue with the Saw series is two-fold and both relating to the traps: They should be puzzles. They must be escapable. Otherwise it's just pointless gore, and that's not why we're here.

I've never understood the attraction of the saw movies. My old college roommate used to love them, I feel like you need to be a complete sadist to get any enjoyment.
Marisol nichols, still looking hot,so it can't be that bad
They better have plans to make another movie and have 1 more final game. A 4 way face off between Dr. GORDON, LOGAN Nelson, Detective Schenk, and yes Detective Hoffman (who somehow made it out), otherwise this movie was a complete waste.
Idk I thought this movie was good ….if u watch the movie from Chris rock perspective it’s pretty good ….most people thought it was like the other saw franchise….but to me it was about a cop who had no idea wat he was in for and came to find out his dad was part of a scheme

Se7en with Chris Rock
The movie was a 5/10
Let’s be honest if you love saw movies you’ll be disappointed with the lack of horror and lack off screen time for traps. And if you were hoping for something new you’ll be even more disappointed because there isn’t anything too different about it.
Are you saying Samuel L. Jackson did it? 🤔
Not to sound sexist but the casting of Marisol Nichols as the captain in a movie like this...is well, quite distracting.
4 other people in the theater? People will think you're doing a Captain Marvel.
It blows my mind that they marketed this as a “reinvention” and yet they got the same old director and writers. Also, what the hell was Chris Rock’s “unique” pitch for the story? This is cookie-cutter Saw, as Dan said.
