Spinning Reel Anti Reverse Explained
What is the anti reverse for on a spinning reel & how to use it to improve your fishing. The anti reverse functionality of a spinning reel is depends on a gear that blocks backward rotation of the reel.
Not all spinning reels are reversible - on some models (notably Shimano reels) the anti reverse gear is permanently engaged, and cannot be turned off. Other spinning reel models have an anti reverse lever that allows you to turn the anti reverse gear on or off, which thus enables you to use release line from the spool by "back pedaling" with the handle. When this lever is switched off, the spinning reel keeps going backwards, which can be problematic when you need to set the hook.
If you want to have this feature on your fishing reel, you need to look for it before you buy, since it can't be added afterwards.

You can control a fighting fish far better when using anti reverse than just relying on the drag/clutch very popular in the UK, not only Carp anglers but example Pike anglers, Cat fish etc. Well done a useful explanation.
Helpful! I am not too familiar with spinning reels (I learned to fish throwing bait casters) and I just bought a spinning reel with anti reverse for an ultra light setup.

The anti-reverse gives the angler more of a feel for fighting the fish. Rather than just letting the drag take the run an angler can control how much the fish is running or not running.

Isn't instant anti reverse referring to the small amount of movement ( reversing ) of the handle in some reels when you pull on the line
I just bought shimano nexave 4000hg, is it normal that it has no anti reverse?
Y my spool is rotating fast when dragging
I have caught a lot of fish and never felt the need to have my reel handle spin backwards.

Yeah just adjust the drag, I've never used reverse or even thought about it.
What's a good reel with anti reverse under $100? My cheap reels get tangled every 20 minutes

If the drag is set too tightly, just loosen it. No need to mess with reverse mode.

Yes, I do it that way myself. But there are some people who like to use the reverse mode. I heard that some carp anglers in the UK use the reverse function to fight fish, and manage to land plenty of big fish like that.
