I usually watch your videos for the spinning magic but often find myself down a different rabbit hole as I listen to you ‘yarn’. Last week I got buried in the ethical dilemmas of wool prices. Today I’m deep in the rabbit hole of festive dates and traditions. Each region of the world is so different. For me, Christmas and Santa and gift giving always happens on 25 December. It’s usually hotter than hell and families tend to fall into 2 camps; beach barbecue or carnivore banquet. Your traditions are so wonderfully different. Thanks for sharing.

Christmas also falls on the 25th for us, Sinterklaas and 'de Kerstman' (Christmas-man) are two different giftbringers for us. Or Well, the entire mysticism and stories that surround Sinterklaas are not there with de Kerstman. With christmas we know the gifts come from our parents and family. But children really believe in Sinterklaas and all adults and the media also really act like he's real. It's oftentimes a really gutting and emotional experience for children to learn sinterklaas doesn't exist. Or at least it was for 10 year old me 😅

on 6.12. all the children were like: "Yay, presents, chocolate, sweets, toys, books..." Jente: "Hold my antique spindles that look like magic wands... ehm, no! Better don't touch these holy gifts." 😃

I’ve started learning to spin on a support spindle because of videos like this! I have wanted to learn for nearly a year. I have a drop spindle but it wasn’t “calling” to me. I just purchased a beautiful Russian style support spindle and I am obsessed with it. The wand like look appeals so much to me. Very time I spin I feel like I am at Hogwarts haha. I am hooked now.

Have fun! The ones shown here are no support spindles, but on my 100 days spindle spinning vlogs I do spin supported a lot!

@@MijnWolden yes but croissants lose their delicious fluffyness very fast so they don't make as much of an efficient thing to stash and hand out to unsuspecting crafters :(

It was interesting to me that you showed a clip of the Ukrainian woman spinning . I have watched that video with fascination a number of times, trying to figure out how she is spinning her wool for blanket weft. Your spinning tools are precious.

Yeah me too, that video has attached itself firmly in my memory. That is such a fascinating movement she's making. So fluid.

I love using a grasped spindle, usually a French pillar spindle. I find then much easier than a drop spindle.

@@MijnWolden I just couldn't get very far with a drop spindle, had a lot of problems with drafting the fiber and keeping the spindle spinning. It only took a couple of days to learn how to use a grasped spindle & get a lot more consistent yarn. Love haw there are different spinning tools to fit everyone's style of spinning!

Watching your videos while spinning for Tour de Fleece has been wonderful! I love your chaotic brain and wool shenanigans! I also got to see you come down the stairs! The fully functional stairs. They're beautiful! Lastly... Did you happen to get your marvelous spindles on Etsy? I recently got two medieval French spindles on Etsy. They are so interesting. I wish they could tell me their history!! And like you, I had to use them to see how well they spin. And now I'm lovingly buffing them, and will put boiled linseed oil on them to help preserve the wood for another couple hundred years. 😊💚🧶

@@MijnWolden thank you…yes it’s just a bit daunting for me, even though im a millennial I don’t learn so well on the internet. Im currently trying to learn to knit and the internet confuses me, and distracts me, more than it helps. Ive done better with a library book. But one has to start somewhere i guess and slowly connect with others to meet physically. I believe this knowledge is so vital and a need for our future, you are an inspiration 🤩

Have you tried reaching out online to communities? There are very big international facebook groups about spinning. Maybe you could be surprised and find someone from your neighbourhood. I even Found a facebookgroup dedicated to the Province I live in (and Belgium itself is already tiny, so to find one for a province sounds like a needle in a haystack)

Oh, these spindles are sooo pretty! Thank you for showing! I don't know what kind of spindles these 'indian' ones are but they look like scottish dealgans...but like not cut in the middle :D Maybe they are replicas of viking spindle sticks...

By the way, the horse of Sinterklaas is now called Ozosnel in the Netherlands. Is it now? When my younger sister was younger it was called Amerigo on Dutch tv. Ozosnel is better, more in line with our Slechtweervandaag 😅

I've found that antique (or antique-style...) spindles do pretty well spun supported. The twiddling motion seems very hard to me!

Actually, with practice, twiddling turns into semi suspended and is quick and easy.

For sure magic wands. You turn sheep into garments. If that's not magic I don't know. I have no idea about your spindels. Hear the word suspended spindles for the first time. I would have assumed they are supported. But I want to tell you something about Indian spindels. India, is gigantic so Thaklis are just one form of traditional spindles. Here. I just learn spinning on the Himalayan phangs. I will send you a, picture on Instagram. Have a lovely day

Your video is both fascinating (antique spindles!!!) and frustrating (extremely poor lighting). It was impossible to see the colors on the painted spindles or even the details on the others. 😥

Thank you for letting me know. My husband and his band were hogging my normal studio, I mostly don't film in my living room like that, but I had a deadline to meet 😅 but I know now I will just hunt them out of the studio instead!

You know, Aurora is honestly pretty weak for pricking her finger on these. You’re playing with these for almost twenty minutes and you’re fine!

Highly edited 20 minutes at that as well, multiple hours at least! 😎 But actually the theory is that she probably pricked her finger on the flax she was spinning, because there literally is nothing sharp on a spinningwheel or spindle... 🤭
