Spin Combed Top To Create Self Striping Yarn

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm turning this multicolored combed top into rolags to create a self striping yarn with long color repeats! A beautiful multicolored combed top can turn into a disappointing yarn if the colors become muddy during the spinning. This is my solution to that problem and it opens up so many colorful spinning possibilities for spinning a combed top!

Amazing! Something I LOVE about the rollags blended on the board is that you can spin each one separatelly then ply it, so the final yarn will keep the gradient 🤩 How lovely is that? I can see garments knitted with this.

Very helpful. As a new spinner, I’m fretting a lot about “no mud,” but you gave me more sense of freedom because ALL of these look good in their own ways. A shawl with all of these variants in progression would be gorgeous. I see that starting with clear colors yields a very pretty result regardless of method. I love the painting feel of the blending board-and I have one!

No favorites, just like them for different things. I appreciate the experimental approach. I’m a long time spinner, and know a lot of this stuff in theory, but seeing it actually laid out side by side is great. I am not organized or patient enough to do these things myself. I also like the attitude of talking about what happens, without attaching judgement to it. Back in the ‘00s I took an advanced or intermediate spinning class that was about some particular aspect of spinning, I forget all the details by now since I’ve taken a few and the memories blend together like your across the top sample. At some point the subject of dying came up and I asked something about dying top, and it was simply dismissed as something that was never ever to be done. I understood that dying top was going to change the way the fibers alined and it would become more like roving, but sometimes I could get a really great bargain on something I wanted in top and I wanted it in a color, and I wasn’t concerned about spinning a perfectly worsted fine thread. It’s important to know how doing something is going to change it, but sometimes you’re ok with the change. I worked in a fabric store while in college, and people would ask if a fabric labeled “dry clean only” was really washable since it seemed. I used to tell them that all fabrics are washable and that you just had to decide if you liked the way they changed when you washed them or not. I then suggested using pinking shears to cut a 4x4 swatch and test wash it.

I absolutely love this video. It is so helpful to know how to spin combed top in a variety of ways. The one I like best is the one with the blending board/rolag method, although I found all of them fascinating to watch. I see how muddy looking that first fiber is when it is all "muddled together." So there is a real advantage to separating your fiber by color and planning your striping, or at least doing it with more forethought. I've been spinning for years, but you really taught me some new stuff here with these techniques. Best of all, I love the comparison yarns you show at the end. In fact, I'm enjoying and learning from your videos so much, that I just signed up for Patreon!

I'm loving the tutorial type videos, especially when you use the PF bags...as I struggle with what to do with mine. I love the rolags spun yarn!

The rolag skein is gorgeous. I did a color theory experiment with hand spun with my first batch of Merino. I made a rust single and a turquoise single. I played them together and yup I had a brown looking yarn.

I like them all. Made my very first 2ply yarns out of the candy cane and twirl colors of merino from Paradise Fiber on 3/6/22. Used only the beginner's Ashford drop spindle and hands. Turned out better than expected. You teach well. Thanks

OMG! Thank you! This helped me figure out February 2022s kit and which way I wanted to go. This also helped me to learn how to read colors in combed top a lot better

Thank you for this excellent video! I have some combed top that I had split into thin strips of color, but was finding it really hard to spin from. I think the wool must have had a short staple length, and I was having a lot of trouble, and ended up not spinning for a few years. But I have gotten back into spinning (YAY!), and will track down that fiber, and use my blending board to make rolags. Hopefully I'll be able to spin something nice out of this after all.

Thanks! It helps so much to see you experiment and play with the fibre. It also makes me less nervous about just diving in and trying something out to see what happens. I would love to see more of the finished product - what do those rolags look like when they're plied? And then knit or weaved?

Maybe i get one of those as a present so i could experiment with it as well. Looks very nice! I never buy them because they are way to overprized for me. 100g for 18 and the undyed 2 bucks is a big difference.

Excellent explanation Evie, as always! I like the blending board one the best but I guess it really depends on what you want to use the finished yarn for and if you need it to look more solid or stripey. The across the top skein looks more tweedy to me and I like that one too!

When I’m looking at multicolored top (so yummy), I visually superimpose a color wheel over it (in my head) to figure out what the fiber would look like blended or what I’d need to do to get the result I want. And sometimes I do walk away without buying it, having decided, for example, that although I love blues and yellows - I have no use for a green shawl. 😉

I recently started spinning with a bare roving with spindles trying out different breeds using undyed combed top. So far the Turkish spindle is the easiest for me. I've dyed the majority of own yarn for 6 years and am looking forward to dyeing the fiber before I spin it. I love watching your videos

I had a rainbow northern lights one that was impossible to separate it went a bit muddy so I spun from fold. i think there's too many colours sometimes about 4 colours seems to work best.i love making rolags too so satisfying 😊xx
