ADDITIONAL NOTES: Some people started saying that the PS3 version has the unlockable costumes, however, it turns out that's not true. Only the Wii version has them. The Wii version also does not have the summonable heroes (most likely a technical shortcoming). Also, Web of Shadows actually has 4 endings! I had no clue about this, as they are harder to trigger. There's bad/good variants when you go with MJ and a bad/good variants for Black Cat. Pretty cool! Finally, there's ONE other Spider-Man game with multiple endings, the Sega CD version of Spider-Man vs Kingpin! There's a bad/good ending where MJ lives or dies. I did a drunken reaction video to this on the channel, so unsurprisingly, I forgot about it.

There’s also a new game plus mode as well. You have to, I’m not kidding, watch the ending and credits three times and then load your save. I’ve done it and it works.

Just a note: Wolverine makes sense over every other cameo in the games because Wolverine and Spidey are legit best friends in the main comic universe. Spider-Man is the only person outside of the X-Men who Wolverine will spend his birthday with, and around the time this game came out--iirc--Wolverine was the one who Spider-Man went to the most for life advice, like when he went to talk with him about whether or not he was ready to actually kill Norman Osborn when Osborn became head of SHIELD. Otherwise: great review that goes over the pros and cons of this admittedly janky-but-fun game.

Hey Matt! Big fan of you reviews I was the UI artist for Wii version of Spider-man Web of Shadows. Aside from just technical work, Treyarch actually helped out on some of the levels plus they made the Wii port of the game. The Wii version's extra costumes were more a less of an after thought that we added in towards the end of project to give the Wii version something extra. If you take note the character portraits for the extra costumes are not actual 3d, I basically took the main character portraits and retraced them in illustrator and gave them a 3d effect to make them match as closely as possible. This was a decision Treyarch made and we got the ok for it because the costume were just quick texture swaps and didn't take too much extra time to do. This was my first project as UI designer back when I first started in the game industry so I made a crap ton of mistakes. Especially trying to over come the small limitations on the Wii versions' title screen animations on the Wii and the Wii icon as well (we were limited to 512kb of space for those including sound). Aside from that the game itself is a technical marvel on the Wii because it's one of the few open world games on that system. Anyway love the review! (you can find my name in the credits on both version although under the Wii version I am listed as Lead UI, the 360 and PS3 version had a different artist for UI as they were from Shiba). Also after Spider-man web of shadows came out, the spider-man team were shuffled into helping the COD team finish World at War, same with the bond team, I left Treyarch right after when they started working on COD BLOPS. (On a side note we've meet once a couple of years back at screen wave event.)

The story of this game is pretty messy, but damn was it fun as hell regardless. Just seeing how expansive it got with so many Marvel characters joining the battle made it feel like an unexpected event that you wouldn't even think of seeing in a lifetime.

I loved that they put more Marvel characters into the game. My knowledge of anything comic related was very minimal back then, so WoS introduced me to Luke Cage, Black Widow, and even some Spider-Man villains I didn't know about at the time, like Tinkerer and Electro. It made the game feel like an expanded universe instead of just strictly a Spider-Man game.

I unironically enjoyed it more than the ps4 Spidey, that one doesn't even have funny QTE fails, and even worse, the sneaking missions with MJ and Miles................. not to mention the combat is superfun

The web combat in this I remember being so fun. You're dead on about all the guest stars though, aside from Wolverine, I don't think any of them even sound great. MJ is especially off.

@@MattMcMuscles There actually was a sequel in the works before Activision shut down Shaba. There are some development sheets that were leaked and one of them included the sequel's Mysterio design. Beenox must've gotten the access to these sheets, since they used that Mysterio design for Shattered Dimensions.

For me Steve Blum is the quintessential Wolverine.

I actually think this game has way better combat and upgrade progression than Spider-Man PS4. Spidey just feels so powerful here. If I had to rank the Spider-Man games, this would be a close second behind Spider-Man PS4. This game has problems, but it's great.

Of course Peter feels more powerful in this game. The threat he faces in WOS is way worse, which forces him to fight more seriously and to pull less punches. In PS4, most threats are just dudes with guns, dudes with high-tech guns, and stronger than normal dudes (but nothing compared to Spider-Man). In fact, I would say that they aren't even dangerous for Peter. Only the villains are an actual threat to him. In WOS, the threat is massive. Large mechs, guys with better power armor, and all sorts of monsters.

The things this game gave us: - A memeable intro (if you add Tokyo Ghoul's Unravel, peak content) - Those QTE's, beautiful - That webstrike - Fighting on walls Okay that's it... I know this game has become somewhat of a cult classic gem over the years, but even at the time of release, it did not look... That great. Like... Spider-Man's VA, Mike Vaughn, was SO miscast, especially when you have major voice actors to bounce off of (I find it funny Tricia Helfer voiced Black Cat here and Spectacular Spider-Man, and Katee Sackhoff in Edge of Time, Battlestar Galactica reunion lol) I NEVER realized there wasn't any unlockable costumes... Wow, that completely slipped my mind!

Fully agree. Spidey ps4 was great, but MAN the combat was lacking for me in that game after WoS. It certainly helps that you almost always fight "supers" instead of random criminals.

Traversal and combat mechanics felt separated in marvel's spider-man. I think the next step for the sequel is to make these mechanics work cohesively. That's why Web of Shadows is such an important game to look at. The problem is that there is also Miles who, I assume, will be a playable character too and I have no idea how this variable would affect the WoS formula in the future.

I got the wii version and loved all the unlockable costumes. The motion controls actually weren't that bad for gameplay and swinging. Having them for QTEs was god awful though.

I have the Wii version too and loved it. I didn't have many problems with the QTEs but I can't say they're memorable either. I loved the Venom Vulture fight. I just keep doing it, over and over again. I also played the 2D side-scrolling versión on the PSP... Finished it, never touch again.

While the moment to moment combat feel is more impactful, and maybe visually spectacular in WoS? The gadgets, environmental interaction, unique AI traits and strategies, and all the individual suit powers and mods of Insomniacs games provides a more robust combat experience overall, IMO.

Yeah I agree while the story was easily the best in Marvel's Spider-Man, the combat was okay. It will never touch Web of shadows. The introduction to all combat to the web strike ability was just to damn good. I don't see insomica surpassing or matching it. Also the option dailogue for every character is great.

As a comic reader from childhood, I was so excited seeing Luke Cage and Moon Knight in the game. Admittedly, I would have preferred they were used more sparingly and not as central to the story... but the idea of some outside characters showing up for a mission or two is something I think they should revisit in future games.

Oh man nobody talks about the swinging in this one honestly think it's up there love how when you are getting into the swings you can hear peter breathing heavy as your doing the perfect run god I wish they'd remaster it

I know everybody hates Spidey’s VA in this game, and I can definitely see a lot of the issues, but I think one thing that he did really well was the combat interactions. Whenever you do that elbow spin move and he hits you with that “EEEEEEYAAAAHHH” shit sounds hard as hell and I love it. Really feels like he’s putting his all into those moves, and makes you feel so damn powerful. Also, when he’s just monologuing, his voice really isn’t that bad. When he’s doing that instead of trying to quip, I think he nails it.

Seriously, I didn't mind the schlocky story. Sure, the use of the symbiote didn't make sense, but the amazing gameplay made up for it in spades. My biggest nitpick is the fact that Moonknight and his plot felt so insanely out of place and pointless.

@@Gatorade69 Moon Knight fights crime in NYC, Wolverine is always in NYC because just upstate is Xavier’s school, black widow is a shield agent and don’t you think shield would be all over a Symbiote invasion in NYC (one of the US’s most populated cities)?? They aren’t out of place tbh. While yes I would’ve loved to have seen the FF, Daredevil, Doctor Strange in this scenario. These characters still make sense in the context of the story

@@Gatorade69 nick fury wasn't the director of shield in this game, it's actually an Easter egg in this game that I happened to notice. There are a lot of billboards in the map that are Easter eggs, and one or more newspapers said that nick fury was no longer director of shield. I don't know about the circumstances of his departure and I'm sure the game doesn't reveal any, but the short story is, black widow replaced him, that's why she's the leader in this game.

I love this game lol, i know its not the best spiderman game but having the symbiote was awsome.

God, I will never tire of that intro animation. Catchy and funny as hell.

I like the idea that you don't spend time on the set-up for the story or explaining everyone and their relationships to Peter. I also like the fact that this game was built like an MCU game in an era before The Incredible Hulk set up the MCU. As a comic fan that is really cool to see and experience, especially in a place as densely populated with heroes as Marvel's NYC.

I think spending time actually explaining your story is better for...the story. If this was marketed as a "MARVEL GAME" I could get behind it with all the cameos, but it's not. It's Spider-Man game. Spider-Man Friend or Foe did a much better job of adding in tons of characters.

This game’s mid air and wall combat were so awesome. One of the few things WoS did better than Insomniac Spider-Man in my opinion. The boss fights were also badass, especially Symbiote Vulture.

About those spider-emblem collectibles you mentioned? There's over 2,000 total. Scattered high and low, in the open and in nooks and crannies, all over the giant map... a map which they are not marked on. On my most recent playthrough, during the first lockdown summer of the pandemic, I have collected them all. This is my most meaningless achievement, but I need someone to know nonetheless. I worked too hard otherwise.

It's not meaningless. It's the means by which you upgrade your healthbar and swing speed. I've also collected all of them

this is honestly, like matt said, my personal favorite spider man title. it was a game I picked up for rental and I just loved all of it, especially the city's progression as the story went on from peaceful to a literal symbiote chaos festival.

the day i accidentally figured out how to start ng+ is one of the fondest memories of my childhood i played through this game so many times it's what got me to want a 360 edit: i didn't realize the ng+ feature was considered a potential glitch but that makes a lot of sense

Interesting information. I've never known that it was supposed to be a marvel zombies game. It would've been cool to play a marvel zombies game but I'm still ok with what we got especially with the symbiote design for each superhero and super villian.

I remember going to GameStop with my Dad and him buying me this game.....good times, yeah some aspects haven’t aged that well but god damn I still love the combat and the web-swinging combined with the ability to switch suits mid combat.

That opening cinematic is god tier

15:30 - This actually happened in a comic. In an alternate universe, Logan took Peter in as an apprentice, and taught him all he knew. After his training, his Spider-Sense was elevated to a greater level. If I remember correctly, Logan proclaimed Peter as the best there is at what they do.

I'd love to see a What Happened on Spider-Man Classic- Shaba's planned sequel to this that would've had a Spidey/Wolverine team-up. It's actually where the Mysterio design in Shattered Dimensions came from.

A lot of fond memories of the Wii version. It's probably not the ideal version or anything special to come back to nowadays, but at the time it was just so damn nice seeing the Wii get the same game as the HD consoles, and not an entirely different build as with Spider-Man 3. And considering there was that 2D version on PS2 and PSP, they could have just as easily slapped that on the Wii and called it done. So I appreciated that they actually put some effort into it, and the unlockable costumes were a nice addition (side note: those *replace* the summonable heroes, but from what I just saw I don't feel like I missed out).

From what I've seen it seemed like the Wii version of Spider-Man 3 was better than the HD version. I had the Wii version, but never played the HD version 😂

When Matt was complaining about the suit changing, I was gonna say that the symbiote can change itself to look like Spider-man red and black outfit which was shown in Web of Spider-man issue 1 where it disguised itself as Peter’s red costume in the closet to bond with him again.

I loved this game. Got almost every achievement in the game without even looking at the achievement list. I just played it over and over again. Keep in mind that this was far before the MCU was everywhere. It was the first game that had so many of these street level Marvel characters in a game, before they were in any TV show like Moon Knight and Luke Cage. I mean, MOON KNIGHT was in the game. I love this game.

The different suit abilities do make sense if you consider the change in aesthetic symbolizes peters and the players willingness to embrace or reject the symbiotes violent power. Lore wise he’d have the same abilities regardless of the appearance of the black suit but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t choose to hold back when fighting

The web swinging in the Wii version was so fun. No other game has captured the art of “Thwip”-ing quite like WoS on Wii.

there's actually 4 ending in this game, 2 of them due to the overall choices you made in the game and other 2 are impacted by one choice.

At one point she will need to be saved and the "only" is to give her the symbiote, if you give it to her but still do all the other choices "Good" Spidey will be alone on the rooftop watching the city and if you don't give it to her and still do "Bad" choices, Only spidey will rule the city.

Mostly good choices but "venomised" black cat - NY is saved, but Peter's relationship with MJ is screwed and he feels bad about it. Bad choices but black cat isn't "venomised" - NY is overrun, and Peter stands alone and promises he'll come for MJ and will make her see how things are great now. Sadly, it doesn't matter for bad endings what you do to Wolverine, he ends up as a tool to hunt Peter anyway. P.S. I played through this game too many times.

As one of the first games I ever played as a kid because my first console was a Wii, this game was one of my favorites, and I’d play it endlessly, because I literally couldn’t get past the ambulance part for a long time in my childhood.

This has to be in my top two games of all time, I can’t even tell you how many times little me played through this game over and over on our wii. I need a remaster so I can experience my childhood again.

I grew up and played Spiderman web of shadows on the wii. The controls were pretty solid and gameplay was fun! I was 12 at the time so I thought the story was okay :P a great time all around!!

Just want to let you know I discovered your channel a few months back and I love all your content! You have a good narration voice and your laugh is very genuine and infectious (notable during the Mugen craziness). Keep it up man! You’re awesome.

Growing up with a Wii and loving Spider-Man, Friend or Foe and Web Of Shadows were my favourite games back in the day. Some of the attacks for WoS were a little wonky, using the nunchuck to web-strike was a little weird and flat out didn’t work like 10% of the time, but still a good time. I will say, playing as Spider-Carnage was my absolute favourite part of the game and I wish they put that costume/character in more games (looking at you Spider-Man PS4/PS5)

Spider-Man summoning Galactus to stomp on a baddie is one of those things that sounds absurd now....but is probably only like a year away from being the post-credit scene in the MCU.

I adore the web swinging in this game to this day. Sure the Insomniac version is cool but it's just super simple. In WoS, when you get skilled at doing tricks and such it was a ton of fun just swinging around

I always assumed the game took place in the main 616 universe (or a universe adjacent to 616) considering the comic trivia quiz during the first Wolverine boss fight. I imagine Shaba felt the best way to separate the game from other titles was to just throw players into the comics themselves in a way. More than likely they had a single session to decide the story and setting then put the other 90% of their brain power on gameplay.

Good timing, I just finished this game like 10 minutes ago

This was the first game whose development I followed. I saw the announcement, I went to the website to check out the lore and teased content, followed the early reviews, and finally got it on Wii. It ran shockingly well, and was one of the coolest games on the Wii at the time because, unlike other ports, content didn’t get cut. This game also got me into KZread playthroughs! I needed help on the Wolverine fight, and I found videos for it, leading me for the first time into YT’s early gaming scene.

Symbiote Vulture is actually one of my top ten boss fights of all time just because of the sheer escalation of it. you riding a SHIELD fighter jet among many going against a murder of symbiote birdpeople.

This spider-man game has the BEST combat in the franchise. Yes, even better than Miles Morales and the web swinging is second best after Miles.

Yeah, this was one of my favorite spider man games. Not for the plot, obviously, but the combat was so much fun. The multiple endings and different reinforcements you could call in was a cool touch. All those Comic Nerd "what if sonso teamed up?" Fantasy come to life. Oddly enough, the dark ending is actually harder to complete than the light ending. The last scenario is really hard with just the black suits moveset and abilities, where has a fully leveled classic suit could blitz through alot of what you face.

i disagree with a lot of points here like with the "overuse" of marvel characters. The game starts out small with just gang fights and cage. When shit starts getting real, more and more marvel characters show up to give you the feeling of "oh shit this IS serious". I also never felt that this wasn't a spider-man game. All the villains are spider-man villains anyway.

There is a New Game+ You have to press continue and watch the credits three or four times, afterwards, the game will start from the beginning with all your previous upgrades and spider emblems collected. This sounds like bullshit creepypasta, but it's not. It's the actual way to access New Game+ in this game, for some reason. Gotta make you sit through those end credits somehow......I guess.

That still doesn't sound right, and feels more like a bug or an oversight.

I love this game and I had the Wii version as a kid and played the PS3 version more recently but from what I remember from the Wii version is that the controls were pretty irritating with you have to flick both of the wiimote and nunchuck for combat. They were just not that responsive, but playing the PS3 version, the controls are way more enjoyable. But then with there not being that much to do after you beat it and the lack of more suits, both versions feel kind of incomplete and I wish they had more time to work on the game because I still love it.

I'm glad you came out of this hoping to see some of its concepts revisited. I also feel it's flawed as hell, but for all the valleys, there're some peaks that other Spidey games just haven't tried

Considering Activision gave the studio a year and a half to make the game, it's a small miracle that it's this good. Good video!

When I saw this game I couldn't believe how good the graphics looked, it's still one of my favorite Spiderman game

I love this game. Yeah it's got some jank and cinematic direction is awful, but if they made a sequel with a better story, I would insta-buy.

I remember the animations in this game being so smooth (except the ones in cutscenes, but I always skip those anyways). And the combat feels so good, especially the web strike mechanic.

Even though I know it’ll never happen, I would absolutely love to see this game get a full remake. I can’t help but think that out of all the Spider-Man games that have come out, this one has the most potential…

honestly even with it's problems I really adored this game the unique combat system,the good and evil options,the switching symbiote costume just wow it was a really fun time all around

This is a very roundabout way of calling this the best Spider-Man video game ever but sure, I'll take it. The combat and web swinging in this game are amazing, and it's still THE Spidey game I load up when I wanna have some fun. They really went out of their way to make you feel like Spider-Man when you were controlling him. Flaws be damned, I didn't need yet another origin story or whatever, Spider-Man is ingrained into my brain, it was just another fun adventure (which was apparently adapted from a Spider-Man zombies thing, and they basically swapped out zombies for symbiotes).

I’ve heard web of shadows was supposed to get a sequel until Activision decided treyarch needed to focus only call of duty and decided to hand the Spider-Man rights to beenox and web of shadows sequel much like Spider-Man 4 was cancelled 😒 where’s cage and his search party I need them to find the sequel to this game

If only Activision had realized Spider-man web of shadows's sequel potential. Also clever joke about Luke cage and his search party 🤣🤣 it made me laugh so much.

Spider-Man 3 on PS2/PSP and Wii has maybe one of my favorite implementations of the black suit. There's a mini-game for taking it off, and the longer you use it, the harder it is to do.

I had fun with that game. I don't really care what the reviews were, this hame kept me entertained for hours. Sucks I lost my copy over the years

Man such a great game with the ability to choose which side you want to be on evil was so worth because of the black cat romance

When I played this game back then I didn't know about the moral system or different endings, I just played it and ended up with Black Cat and symbiote army. 😅 I personally love the story its similar to Prototype my fav game of all time.

conceptually this is definitely one of the greatest superhero games tbh, even tho it fell on its face a lot when it came to execution i still replay it now and then just to experience the environment and grittiness of the game. Really hope they can make a modern spiderman game building off this concept i need me some dark spidey stories in my life

Unfortunately, I don't think that modern game industry has balls to do a dark Spider-man story. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

I played it a lot on ps3 when i was a preteen. Loved the edgelord black suit. The new game plus thing was so weird. When u finished the game and pressed continue it would go straight to credits. But if u watched them all the way through without skipping anything and pressed continue again itd be new game plus. Thats as far as i remember. Was absurd

one of the few yt intros ill always watch in full cuz goddamn those first few og chords..

I remember loving this game when I was younger. It was definitely my favorite wii game in my middle school years. Hell its a game me and my best buddy bonded over and we still remember it to this day for one reason only. VENOM-HYDRA! Baby! :D

The Wii version had a lot of issues with characters and objects just dropping through the map or spawning inside objects and the motion controls for the QTEs were just...just horrible rage enducing jank.

Spidermatt destroyed my nostalgia goggles for this game. Damn. I used to just swing around and fight stuff when i was younger in this game for hours. I never played the movie games so it worked for me

First time listener, first time caller, literally sent here because I ramble about this game all the time, great video ngl. Absolutely not to be the person who reads too much into trash (I am about to do that exact thing) but I will never get over this game for missing the mental health read it could have had? The symbiote's supposed to be a literal manifestation of your inner demons and having a game where the antagonist is literally consumed by them and begins spreading it to the people around him until someone who cares helps him pull his way out (if peter resists his own demons, the desire to live solely for himself because caring about others hurts when there's too much going on to save everyone) there's just??? such a potential in there??? expand electro's arc where he's terrified because his sister has vanished and shit's going down and he needs to find her, even! I would absolutely kill for a sequel, a remake, something where those tiny, glimmering jewels in the rough can teased out and brought into the light.

Fun fact: Mysterio‘s design on Shattered Dimensions was actually the design he was gonna use for a scrapped Web Of Shadows sequel

I had the Wii version back in the day. Let me quickly summarize it. 1: Unlockable costumes are dope 2: To lock on to an enemy you had to swing the nunchuck. Very obnoxious. 3: THE FUCKIN QTE'S NEVER FUCKING WORKED! The fail animations get a lot less funny when you have to see them TWENTY-FIVE FUCKING TIMES!

This game has the best combat of all Spider-Man games. I hope marvel’s Spider-Man 2 borrows some of the symbiote mechanics from this. One of the defining games of my early teens for sure, I just loved doing the boss fights over and over

I remember the camera locking in one position on me a lot. The webstrike, and fighting on walls were cool.

This is actually my favorite Spider-man game. I think the story is fine. Ever since I learned that the symbiotes could split and reproduce I have wondered why they didn’t do it more often. I got my answer with this game.

I owned the wii version and it was a lot of fun except the quick time events were hella rough. Forget buttons, you had to do remote swinging for them and it didn’t register 90% of the time. Also I had no idea that version was the only one with costumes

19:49 In Mike Vaugh’s defense, I would put most of the blame on the scripting and writing rather him. He also voiced Spider-Man in the DS version and I honestly think he does a pretty good job there. The prologue and epilogue are especially good.

I forgot where exactly I heard it but apparently this game started out as a Marvel Zombies game. So that could potentially explain the hero swapping in the story.

There’s even a pop up in one mission, that says “Defend the safe zone from ZOMBIES “, likely a reference to that potential game.

There are actually more than 2 endings! There are four total, the All Good, the Mostly Good, the Mostly Bad, and the All Bad. Most people never find out about the middle two; they're trickier to get.

I just picked up a copy for PS3 two days ago for a steal price, considering how much they go for now, I got done beating the campaign an hour ago, was worth replaying again and experiencing since the last time I actually played it back when it launched in 2008 considering I was only 8 at the time and the nostalgia was still accurate and felt the way I picked it up for the first time, this is a hidden gem and underrated especially the story as well combat

I do LIKE this one but it never ranked high for me. I love Moon Knight being in it. And I love wearing the black suit for any reason (though I prefer the cloth version). Even if I'm always annoyed at the story concept of the suit making Peter act differently. Always preferred the original comic interpretation, where the only negative aspect of it is it makes him tired ONLY because he keeps taking it off. My biggest memory of this game was that I played exclusively in the black suit the whole game, then made all Red Suit choices. So when you lost the black suit, while I appreciated it gave me all my black suit experience to pump into Red I still had NO idea how to use the Red Suit effectively.

The Sega CD version of Spiderman does have multiple endings. Speaking of which, I would recommend that one to check out.

The game is awessome, but: I found saving citizens who were falling annoying. Stupid spider-sense would always aim for enemies. When I get a chance to save someone, they block in mid-air. About spider-emblems, no one ever recorded themselves collecting them all except one kid who spent 2 hours finding 1000 spider-emblems. What a legend. "Love triangle" felt stupid to me. They could have just added MJ as some minor character. Black Cat could have just been an ally like she is.

Watching this video makes me really sad that I never gave this game the chance it deserved, but also very happy that I finally know where the Spider Man Unravel meme comes from. Thank you Matt.

This was the first game I QA tested at Activision. The QA team for it was way small, compared to the rest of QA, who were testing COD: World at War at the time.

I remember doing a new game+ when I played this multiple times. I don't know if it was a glitch but I fully remember doing it. Was able to keep all my upgrades.

If they rebooted or made a sequel with the right team then I bet it would be a masterpiece.
