What a treat! I love that these films aren't ashamed of being adaptations of pulpy 60s comics. They own the cheese! Raimi was the perfect choice.

And the irony is, by owning the cheese they also become more sincere. Like I'd argue the MCU films are actually even more campy because they have an obsession with turning to the camera and winking like "Yeah, we know this is stupid" with the incessant quipping and ironic humor. Meanwhile, the Raimi films were goofy, but just did that. Just embraced that kind of environment. That's what I want. A CBM to embrace its tone rather than just sarcastically make fun of itself.

I also purchased a corded curtain rail at the same time and then set about working out how to automate them. It's really all quite easy once you stop and think about it. The side masking works on a second corded curtain rail and the top and bottom masking is on a roller blind. All run off the same type of curtain motor and controlled by X10 which turns the wiring loom of the house into a receiver. i think a more understandable and concise explanation for vistavision is that it is essentially the 35mm still photography frame. this could clarify the formats to most viewers too. i know that for myself, i long time thought that the frames for 35mm still photography were the same as the frames for 35mm motion picture film. it did not occur to me that the motion picture film spooling vertically meant that the sides would be defined by the regions before the sprocket holes whereas in still photos, the sides could be much wider and that the sprocket holes would define the top and bottom of frame now (that is, the widest part of a 35mm motion picture frame is the NARROWEST part of a 35mm still photo and (therefore) vistavision frame.

You may find the same as I did on my system Andrew and that you need to turn the HDR down a little. The first film was the most overblown as I recall with the third being the best. Best of the lot was the second film on 35mm though!!! The 4K of the 1989 Batman causes a lot of angst among some fans who all seem to have told me the same thing - that there is too much 'teal' in the colouring. My suspicion is that someone put something out there to claim this and it's caused others to get upset about it and essentially get on the bandwagon because it's a darn fine interpretation of the film as far as I''m concerned. My 35mm pre-release teaser trailer did go off for a 4K scan following my review of that film and it does look strikingly similar to the 4K disc so the graders didn't do too bad a job when you consider they were starting from scratch as it was a transfer of the original negative. So, no grading on that just the raw camera elements all spliced together. John.

Great review as always! Just checked on IMDb: Spiderman 2 was shot on the grainier Kodak Vision 500T (as opposed to the finer grain 200T used on Spiderman 1) and of course the wider 2.39:1 format meant more cropping top and bottom of the Super 35 camera negative. The 4K digital intermediate was of course made with early 2000s scanners. Today's film scanners are much better. I agree that a good 35mm print has that silky image which for me is what cinema is (should be) all about. Thanks for sharing your passion!

Good information there about the film stocks. My interpretation was that the first film was the coarser grain so that makes it even more interesting. I wonder if a digital sharpen tool was used on the first film for the 4K discs and that introduced noise and it's not film grain that we're seeing. Spider-Man 2 has finer grain that the first film on the 4K disc so it would explain it. The 35mm print is excellent and one of the best we've ever screened on the 24ft BFCC 'Scope screen which belies its origins really. John.

@@moviecollector5920 As far as I know, the "master" of most movies from the 2000s is the digital intermediate. It states on IMDb that in 2017 a 4K remaster was made of Spiderman 1. I am not 100% sure how this worked in each case, but I presume that the camera negatives were scanned at 2K and all editing, CGI, digital clean up and color grading was done in the computer (probably Final Cut Pro and similar) and then lasered out for the 35mm internegative and prints, so we are stuck. As I said I am not 100% sure since this was a transition era. I have seen mid 2000s 35mm prints that looked awful because of apparently poor scanning and bad color grading. Examples are "The Island", "Taking Lives" and "Constantine". The film prints lacked the transparency and gorgeous colors of 1990s movies that still were all photochemical. BUT I am not a purist. Have you seen "Knives Out"? It was shot on digital (ARRI Alexa 65) and the latest film emulation software has been applied. Now you get that sweet highlight rolloff, the typical film halation (red-orange countours around high contrast situations), very convincing film grain, colors, texture and even gate weave. Very inpressive (and also a great movie). (Edited for typing errors)

    @moviecollector5920

@@truefilm6991 If they really were outputting an internegative from a 2K master back in the 2000s then it would explain why films at the cinema looked so lacklustre. I remember seeing The Island in Leicester Square and the uninvolving image quality spoiled what was an interesting film. A lot of decent films at that time were ruined so what you have said does make sense. I lost interest in cinema because of the poor image quality and I've been cautious to ensure I am only seeing a film print ever since (which is increasingly difficult these days). However, the Spider-Man 2 prints were wonderful so maybe there was a marriage of two technologies for that one. I haven't seen 'Knives Out' as the awful trailer put me off that one. But I have seen 'Midway' and I was fooled by the computer generated film grain so I think that probably went through the same process. That's the way forward if film isn't being used.

@@moviecollector5920 Yes, 2K digital intermediate was the standard during the 2000s and beyond. I have read comments on the Blu-Ray Comparisons channel. Most movies from that time period are stuck with 2K and there is no visible increase in resolution from the Blu-Ray to 4K. Earlier movies look (mostly) stunning in 4K, especially when taken from the original negative cut. The detail modern scanners can squeeze out of film is incredible - and there is still room for improvement. 'Homecoming' was okay and the young man who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man is likeable and very good, but it's just not Spider-Man as I know it. I don't like to talk films down as a lot of work goes into every single production so I always try to find the good points or say nothing at all. Tobey Maguire was perfect and surprisingly so. I wouldn't have chosen him but for that version of the character in those films - perfect! Maybe when the new film has been released on home video I'll have another excuse to re-visit the Spider-Man films so maybe then I can mention the other two chaps and say how suitable I think they were. I never worked in a theatre but I've been lucky enough to be shown around some of the top projection boxes in the world by the projectionists. Magical places at the time that are now a bit of a bore as they're just projecting video in the main. In terms of all the different formats the easiest one to clear up is anything with 'Scope in the name because that means a 2x squeezed film print. I demonstrated this in the Jaws review simply because I had the 2x squeeze Jaws trailer on my Super 8 projector and it has a swing in and out 'Scope lens attachment on it. 'Rama' is just a sort of buzz word to make a filming format sound special and 'Vision' was really just VistaVision which was horizontal 35mm doubling the exposed film to twice the size of normal vertical 35mm. In other words, the film usually goes through the camera vertically but the VistaVision camera has it go through the camera horizonatally just like a stills camera. The exposed frame size is 4 sprockets on standard 35mm and 8 sprockets with VistaVision. Technirama is VistaVision with a 1.5x squeeze which gives a final aspect ratio of 2.20.1 which just happens to match 70mm and means 70mm release prints can be struck for special presentations. IMAX is 70mm film with each frame being 15 sprockets and if you've never seen a genuine IMAX film print then it's... well, words cannot describe. John.

Amazing video! The Raimi trilogy will always be my favourite series of films, the second one in particular is my favourite film ever. These films just get better and better as the years go by, and I hope there’ll be some sort of celebration for the 20th anniversary of the first film next year. The 4Ks do look pretty good all things considered. I did notice a missing sound effect on the Atmos track for the second film though, when Octavius knocks out Spidey on the train. I actually did a video on my channel comparing the theatrical and extended versions of Spider-Man 2, going through every change, of which there are quite a lot of minor recuts and alternative takes. I do wish the 2.1 version was included on the 4K disc for completionist reasons. Aside from that and some minor nitpicks, I’m overall very happy with these discs!

I think we all need to bear in mind that it takes a lot of work to get one of these 4K discs mastered. Getting a standard Blu-ray mastered is big enough and can set you back weeks if anything goes wrong, so a 4K much be a massive undertaking. That is why I believe the distributor usually only includes the original version of a film. That may change when Aliens appears but that may prove to be a little unique. Right, now I need to look up a certain channel that did a review of the differences between the two versions of Spider-Man 2!!! John.

Another stellar video, John. I was also a huge Spider-Fan growing up, and while I was disappointed the first film wasn't going to be made by James Cameron as had long been discussed, I really liked the 2002 film. I was working at the movies at the time, and it was like the Second Coming of Jesus, and the reaction of the recent Avengers films have amused me since the younger fans of those movies love to now pistol whip these nearly 20 year old films that everyone loved. Spider-Man 2 was even better, and really one of the best summer blockbuster screenings I've been to when I saw a midnight show in Orlando in 2004. 3 was disappointing, but it's competently made and has some good points. If the storyline was less cluttered (one of the big problems I have with the MCU series), it could've been great. Are you a fan of the 70s Spider-Man tv series? It's tacky by today's standards, but seeing repeat viewings of it as a kid was always special since we weren't drowning in the excess of superhero fare like today.

  • @moviecollector5920

I think the modern superhero films are CGI bores. Well, that's my summing up but I accept that they're made for the current youngsters who have grown up with video games so the film makers can get away with unrealistic imagery because most of the audience can't tell the difference anyway. The Raimi Spider-Man films were real films although the third one was going a bit too over the top with CGI so the future probably wouldn't have been particularly good if they had have carried on. I have seen a couple of the later Spider-Man films and whilst 'Homecoming' wasn't terrible, it wasn't good and that's the best of them. In other words, the Raimi films cannot be compared to what are being made today - they're just in a different league. I did enjoy the Spider-Man cartoon series in the 70s but I haven't seen it since. I nearly bought an episode on Super 8 a few years ago so maybe I'll snap one up next time I see one for sale just to see what I think today. It will be worth it for the theme song if nothing else. James Cameron has made some of my favourite film but then things went a bit awry for me with Titanic. I enjoy watching it but I don't like the main characters which makes it a bit difficult.

Scratches can occur for a variety of reasons Clark with the worst offenders being worn film guides. They can be impossible to see without dismantling a projector but it is possible to work out roughly where scratching is occurring by running a film backwards and then forwards and so on and so forth. I usually check down the leader of a film before running it through and if any new scratches occur then it comes out, I give the projector a good clean through with a cotton bud to remove any grit that may be lurking in there and then try again. Some projectors can be rather too tight to get a cotton bud all the way through the film path so be careful not to force one in to a place where you can't remove it. I've had to resort to tweezers and all sorts in my time owing to a ripped off cotton bud blocking the film path. John.

Always loved Sam Raimi's Spider-man films, especially 1 and 2. As someone who grew up reading the Spider-man comics in the 70s and 80s, Raimi gave us the truest and most faithful rendition of the character. But you're right - the 4K UHD of the first Spider-man is overly bright. In fact every home video version of it has always had a slightly odd 'bubble gum' colour palette that, throughout most of the film, is quite distracting - especially those scenes with the overly pinky skin tones. And it is even more prominent on the 4K. But, like you, I have been able to mitigate the effect somewhat by adjusting the settings on my Panasonic UHD player, namely minus 2 points on the 'Dynamic Range Adjustment' and minus 2 points on the 'Hue'. It's not a perfect solution, but it is better. Ideally the film could do with a new top-to-toe restoration sourced from the original camera negative (preferably supervised by Raimi) in time for its 20th anniversary next year ...but that may be wishful thinking as it's doubtful the studio would ever want to go to the expense and trouble of doing that.. But here's hoping.

What do you mean by "more natural look of film"? I'm kinda getting the impression that the 4K discs are good substitutes for prints.

The Spider-Man 4K trio are not quite as good as most 4K transfers of films so particularly with regard to these three videos film has a more natural look. Film also projects more naturally at home as it's exactly the same technology as cinema whereas most of us only have a single chip video projector for home use and therefore these are not up to the standard of current video projectors used in cinemas. Having said that, a lot of cinemas in Britain are using old 2K video projectors and I never saw a good one so perhaps our budget 4K home video projectors are better in some regards. A few cine 4K cine transfers do indeed look like film prints. Jaws and Apocalypse now are the two stand-out 35mm transfers but all of the 65mm film transfers look exceptional. John.

Nice video as usual :) But out of curiosity how much does a movie on 35mm film or other film mediums like Super 8 cost for you to buy? My guess, can't be cheap. ;) Also it can't be easy to get movies on 35mm so how and where do you get them? Can't comment in terms of quality differences between film and discs. But my general opinion is that digital is almost always sharper than film. The rest of the differences I'll leave to you or other people with great experience with film to comment on. But anyway the closest to film must be 4K UHD Blurays might even be better in some cases. Not taking grain into consideration because I think it's more of a byproduct from ware like clicks and pops on vinyl although I know some directors add grain to the movie to make it look a certain way. Am I right about Bluray or is film ALWAYS superior in terms of picture quality?

Video cameras have come a long way in the last twenty years so there are occasions when shooting on video is possibly better. That's because a lot of feature length videos go straight to television, subscription or pay-per-view now rather than to a cinema. But film has a different, more natural look and that is what film makers are trying to achieve by adding computer generated film grain and such like. Spider-Man 2 on the 4K disc may be sharper than my 35mm print (but when I get an upgraded lamp in my 35mm projector I hope to be able to discern that better) but the 35mm image has a nicer, more natural look to it. As I said in the video though, this is a domestic video projector so the inference I was making was that I expect that it would look even better on a 4K cinema video projector rather than a budget home machine. Similar can be said of the 35mm though so I want to address that sometime in the future with a whacking great lamp housing to punch the brightest light I can afford through it. I haven't purchased any 35mm for years. They used to cost between £80 and £250 for a feature but there were exceptions for really sought after prints. Pre-1982 were rarely on low fade stock (unless dye-transfer Technicolor) so possibly not worth the risk and the same can be said for most Super 8 prints. Fortunately the best Super 8 releases came out from the second half of the 1980's onwards so it's not much of a problem. A two hour feature used to cost £300 but I think you can probably more than double that now given the miniscule market and the cost of film stock and the labour to produce them. Second hand features probably go for about what they used to sell for new but some titles are so sought after that it's gotten ridiculous. Alien, Terminator 2, Star Wars etc. could be £1,000 a time now but I wouldn't pay anywhere near that much. I expect something similar has happened with 35mm as prints are rarely struck these days so those that are still around will be more valuable. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Oh damn. I thought they would be more expensive for sure but not that expensive. Sure the price is dictated by how many there are out there but still. It is interesting how analog media still has advatages over digital media. I mean we're still debating vinyl vs cd/digital. The really big advantage is the physical size which trumps quality in most peoples eyes I guess. Tbh, yes I am a noob at film projectors😁, I thought that the projector itself didn't do that much since it's analog and basically the picture is on the film and a light source just had to go through it compared to a digital projector that has to process the data before making out the image. I get that there are differences in the lamp source as with digital projectors. Thanks for explaining.👍 How far would you say the digital media (4K Bluray) has come compared to film? Are we almost there or is it like 10 more years until digital are even or better?

@@sebulbathx The brighter the light the sharper the projected image looks. I have the brightest Super 8 projector in the UK and Spider-Man and everything else looks better on it. We used that projector for years at the film collector conventions and it was a one-off conversion at the time. In terms of how close video projection is I don't know for sure. I was told by another subscriber yesterday that laser video projection has now surpassed film but I haven't seen it. I stopped frequenting cinema during the mid-2000s when the top cinemas abandoned film for low quality, 2K video projection. It looked awful compared to what I had always been used to so could no longer see the point. Video cameras and video technology generally has come on remarkably but as far as I'm concerned film has a unique, natural look. The 4K release of Midway is worth looking at with its computer generated film grain. I need to take a closer look because I was fooled at the time - it looked like video but had grain so I couldn't work it out. Then I was told it was fake but I think it was a step in the right direction. Some of these videos look just that - video. I think that's the one down side of the film 1917 even though it's amazingly sharp and colourful. If it had have been shot on film (probably not possible) or looked like a film then it might have been perfect. John.

Awesome video as always. As you can probably tell by my profile image I’m a huge Spidey fan, I too was raised on the comics, I had Spider-Man Comics Weekly put aside at my newsagents every week. I’m still reading them today! I was really looking forward to the Raimi movie in 2002, as I really loved the Nicholas Hammond Spidey movies in the late 70’s, no matter how cheesy they may look today. Unfortunately I was really disappointed with the Raimi films, in particular the casting choices. I thought Tobey was terrible as Spidey and Peter. He and the equally awful Kirsten Dunst had no chemistry onscreen. Kirsten certainly wasn’t the fun loving glamorous party girl/model/actress MJ from the comics, and where was the sense of humour and snark that Spidey had when fighting his enemies? I thought that JJJ, Aunt May and Betty Brant were perfectly cast though. It’s a shame as I really enjoyed Spider-Man 2, and Alfred Molina was awesome as Doc Ock, but I just couldn’t get past mopey Maguire and miserable MJ. I did however love The Amazing Spider-Man. Now Andrew Garfield had perfect snark as Spidey, straight out of the comics, he was also his own genius, creating his own web shooters and costume. He had great, real, chemistry with Gwen Stacy (Spidey’s first true love before MJ), and the end scene of ASM2 is truly heartbreaking - again, straight out of the comics, even down to Gwen’s costume design. I think ASM2 was ruined, like Spider-Man 3, by cramming too many (weak) enemies into the film. I would have loved to have seen Andrew complete his trilogy at least. While I like Tom Holland, he’s not Peter or Spidey to me. He’s too ‘Stark’ built, and his supporting cast of characters are so far removed from their comic book originals, that it’s painful to watch. He also doesn’t carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, as Peter should. (Again, I think Andrew portrayed this greater than either Tom or Tobey). I hope you’ll get to give your views on the ASM and MCU Spidey entries. It would be interesting to hear your reviews :) Keep on doing what you are doing. I really love seeing your reviews and your collection. All the best - G :)

Gary, I'm the complete opposite and really don't like the Andrew Garfield portrayal so I'll have to take another look sometime. I rather like the young man playing Spidey now but the stories aren't the Spider-Man/Peter Parker character I know. Times move on though and youngsters today are a different audience. You and I will just have to conspire to write the ultimate Spidey story and sell it to Columbia Pictures so we can supervise them getting it right. I'll direct, you supervise! John.

It will be interesting if the MCU Spidey 3 will bring in Andrew and Tobey as rumoured alongside Tom Holland in a live action Spiderverse movie. By the way, I’ve met Nicholas Hammond, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Film making used to be a much tighter process than it is today. But there was only the theatrical outing and television rights to sell and that was it. Today if a film doesn't do very well at the box office there are a whole host of other avenues down which the film can be sold. It's a different market and it seems that it's worth a studio pumping hundreds of millions into the comic book adaptations because the younger audience will watch these films over and over again. If Alien was to be made today it would be destroyed by money. I can just imagine all the CGI proliferating at every step as well as the rushed nature of story telling today. No way would we have the first hour where hardly anything happens other than scene setting and character development/introductions. John.

The decision to go Super 35 rather than 2x anamorphic was at the request of the special effects people as the squeezed frame tends to cause them more problems. As it happens the resultant squeezed release prints were so good that it's hard to believe it didn't originate that way. Amazing really. John.
