HOME CINEMA UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Фильм және анимация

Having moved from Cornwall to our new location a new home cinema has been necessitated. This video shows the old cinema being dismantled and the beginning of the creation of the new cinema.
Also mentioned in this review is Stuart Hilliker's excellent video of the November 2021 Blackpool Film Collectors Convention. The opening five minutes or so are of the Saturday evening dinner which may not be for everyone but thereafter it is the Sunday convention day and well worth watching for anyone interested in taking up the 'reel' film hobby: • Blackpool Film Convent...
I hope to do an update video soon to show the latest home cinema creation progress.
John.

I truly appreciate your humble home theater. I’m as much of a film geeks as I am a tech geek- I’m fascinated with fancy gear and electronics, but some of the systems out there are ridiculous. Doing more with less is far more interesting to me. Please continue to show the process as it comes together!

Thank you Matt. I think it's better to do something simply and cheaply rather than spend vast sums on something that achieves the same result. As film collectors we never had the possibilities that are being sold today and had to work it all out for ourselves. Roller blinds and corded curtain tracks seem obvious to me and they don't cost much. Sticking a motor on them and automating them is the most expensive part but even the curtain motors I use only cost about £80 each. John.

I agree with you. Most films do not require a substantial setup, but it is nice when a film's production can exploit your investment. On the other hand, one of my me and my wife's favorite film is The Bridges of Madison County and I assure you we do not sit watching it waiting for the sub or rears to kick in and that's OK.

I really appreciate your homegrown approach to a dedicated theater room. I don't have an extra room in my house for that so I've had to make some interesting accommodations in my living room. An 80 inch pulldown screen is mounted over my TV and my projector gets set up on the ottoman (and then tucked away again after each use). And I have a long HDMI cable that's run from the back of my receiver around my living room under the molding and coiled up under my couch -- I just pull it out and connect it up when it's time to watch a movie. All in all, it's about a 5 minute set-up when I want to watch a movie projected.

That sounds like a jolly good solution Tom. We got the 10 foot roll down screen over 30 years ago for much the same solution when we were in central London. Back then there was no video projection of course but the Super 8 projector was permanently mounted at the far end of the room so all it took was to roll down the screen and thread a film up. I had hifi and speaker cables hidden all around the sides of the room and I loved it. People from all over the world visited to see that little setup back then but it helped being available just around the corner from the British Museum. Those were the days - Super 8 was king and there was nothing else that could touch it. It made projecting a feature film very special. John.

Its always interesting to see other people's elegant home theatre solutions. The hobby really does not require as much as some people might think. Beyond the basics, the rest is gravy. Putting the projector outside the door might actually have the added benefit of being more convenient, not less. Perhaps on a rolling cart, it can easily be placed as need. Love the EXIT sign btw. In case anyone is interested, I've now used my 4K laser tv for a little over a month and am very pleased with the experience. The 100" screen along with the insanely high brightness level mimics a film projector in all but name, but with the convenience of a television. Very nice piece of kit, if perhaps a bit finicky in setup...like ikea on steroids. One tip, if I may be so bold to suggest, is in regard to disk storage. The temptation is to put shelves against the wall, but you loose three dimensional access. I have all my shelves free standing, so I have access to two rows of films front and back, as well as a top. Like a proper library. The only issue is to make sure the shelves are properly anchored to reduce the chance of tipping over. I built them all custom, since I've never found anything close at retail.

I expect I'll be making lots of changes to the home cinema before we get builders in but it will all help to inform how the final iteration gets done. I really wanted to use the whole 10 foot width of the screen but there's always a compromise somewhere. An easy solution would be a short throw video projector but finding another projector that comes up to the standard of the Optoma might be difficult without spending a heck of a lot of money. I was going to have a maze of shelving for the video and film library room but it's the weight of everything that means we're being cautious. Discs and video tapes will be upstairs and films will be downstairs where they're not likely to go through the floor! John.

The short-throws have come a long way in just the last year, of course there still are many inferior models out there, but I think its a space worth looking into or at least keeping an eye on. If one still has an adequate projector, there is little reason to upgrade. My decade old plasma was just getting a little long in the tooth.

Or you can look at Keith (Euphoria Pictures) solution for a home cinema and get a pod for your garden! Quite amazing what can be done these days. But a ten foot wide screen makes one heck of an impact wherever it is. We used to operate exactly that way in London when our ten footer went up across the balcony doors about 30 years ago. I hope to get back to doing that soon but right now it's got to solve the angle of projection issue in the cinema room for us and it has even surprised me how well that solution has worked. John.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but it’s the ultimate way to fall asleep (only AFTER I’ve finished the video(s) of course!) I’ve only recently discovered the channel, so have been making my way through the backlog - almost there! Anyhoo, just wanted to drop a note and let you know your work/hobby is greatly appreciated, especially during a time when one wants little more than to find an escape from the outside world, whether that be through film or the plethora of content creators on KZread (it’s also been a nice way to feel connected to said world without having to be within 6ft of anyone lol). Cheers from Canada! -Matt

Good to hear from you Matt and sorry I didn't reply yesterday but I spent all day trying to work out and install the top masking in the cinema. It looks like I've found a solution that works now but it was trial and error and the day more or less disappeared. Bottom masking is going to take a while yet but I may use a different solution for that this time as I'm using the roll down screen so perhaps it makes sense to move that up and down rather than attempt another heavy masking fabrication on the roller blind mechanism. I'll need to get a new roller mechanism for the screen though as it's really heavy and after 30 years it's completely knackered so doesn't like being rolled up and down like it once did. Over here in England we seem to be on the right path for a return to normality now. I expect you're getting similar propaganda from your mainstream media but I've made quite a study of Covid-19 and learned not to listen to mainstream journalists. The Omicron variant is wiping out the Delta which is good news as it is causing far less illness and when it does it's affecting the bronchial passages rather than the lungs. Delta was basically a viral pneumonia but Omicron is more akin to a common cold. There are variations of course as there always are with any disease or virus but that is why South Africa were telling us from the beginning that Omicron is a "storm in a teacup". The future looks to be much brighter now thanks to Omicron. So not long now and you might even be able to get within six feet of people! John.

One major thing I've learned about home cinemas is that they're never done, but that's half the fun of it. Mine started out with a mini 480p projector and a bed sheet with two computer speakers and is now near to yours. Brilliant Jaxon! I've reached the point with the new home cinema where I'm beginning to enjoy the process once more but I am a little more impatient this time as I've done it all before and want to get back to where I was. However, yesterday I ordered 4 metres of black velvet and a new sidewinder for the roll down screen as it's possible - but unlikely - I'll be able to wind the screen up and down to replace the bottom mask I usually run in synch with the top mask. Different approach for the same end result but it will mean a separate curtain motor to do it. Then it will be time to set about getting the curtains up and they need extending so I plan a glitzy addition to the outer edges of those. It never stops so you're right about a home cinema always being a work in progress. John.

Thank you Jeremy. Fortunately I'm able to put the THX speakers anywhere and they always sound fabulous. That's probably due to the multi-directional tweeters that fire the sound everywhere. And when it comes to putting a screen up or painting one in I've done it so many times that it's usually quite straightforward. However, this time I wasn't expecting to be projecting from outside the door at an angle so that's made me think a little. Getting the top and bottom masking in will have to be a little different and currently I'm thinking of installing the roller blind in below and behind the roll down screen and then having wheels to take the cords over the top of it. Lots of frustration, cursing and cups of tea coming up! John.

We're trying to take a bit of time to get everything organized here and the home cinema is no exception. Today I've been trying to work out top and bottom masking and have started to tackle the top mask first and see how I get on. A basic roller blind handling one of these is asking a bit much now it's over ten feet wide so I need to be careful. Getting the roller to actually stay in place and not come away when the motor engages is also going to take some work as I can't screw it into the wall this time, it has to be the ceiling because I'm having to use the 10ft roll down screen and it's in the way. But it's satisfying to make little bits of progress each time something goes well. John.

Get the blackest black velvet you can find for the best effect. I'm tending to staple the velvet onto the card now as it lasts far longer than my earlier sticky tape solution. John.

Casino Royale is one of the best Bond films but we can now see if was a reboot. Each actor who comes in to play Bond may well go through the same process and start at the beginning and get killed off in the end. I suppose the video projection era has come about during the cheapo multiplex era and you're lucky if you get motorized masking in some of their studios, let alone curtains. As for a screen, I'm only using our ten foot roll down because I had to project at an angle until we can get builders in to sort something else out. Usually the best solution is to paint the wall and then mask it with velvet. The motors I use are noisy but they do the job and have so far survived over 20 years of use. Just got your email too Clark so thank you for that. Grease is a very good 4K disc but there were quite a few focus errors when filmed so the production itself wasn't quite as good as it should have been. I had the job of reviewing the 'Scope Super 8 release for the 25th anniversary and I don't recall picking up the same faults so the 4K is evidently somewhat sharper but I did watch that review print on the 10 foot screen so my eyes were probably drawn to the main attention of each scene (which was always in focus) rather than taking in the whole frame where it was sometimes out of focus top and bottom. As for the Alien poster, I've had that for years and I think it cost £45 at the time. Gawd only knows what they'd go for today. It was like a 70mm festival had taken over central London! Prints between collectors tend to sell for less than eBay so you should find less popular 35mm films for far less than The Usual Suspects. Hopefully you've got a bit of space around your new property, so that you can have the audio at a fair volume but not enough to drive the new neighbours crazy. In thinking about the blinds, I think I would probably use your idea in conjunction with smart plug sockets - they cost like £8-10 each and from that it could control the electric motors over the air either via voice (using google home hub) or App and I am sure would be able to have pre-sets. Handy features and a rabbit hole of possibilities with smart devices. Could take the level of automation further with a movement sensor above the door that when you walked in it would switch specific lights on to an adjusted level/colour, automatically start opening the blinds, turn projector on to run an old advertisement video etc. Absolutely not needed in a setup but a fun challenge in recreating the cinema experience.

New Home cinema looks like it’s coming on well John! Interesting project. In terms of getting extra distance between projector and screen, have you considered projecting onto a mirror (or mirrors) to get the required focal distance within current room dimensions? This trick is used by opticians who need to project an eye chart in a small sight testing room (my dad used to do this). It does mean you need to use high quality mirrors, and keep them clean. Also, the software in the projector needs to be able to be reverse the picture to compensate. Just a thought as less destructive than altering walls…. Hope you’re both well. George.

Glad you managed to get a video up and that you Christened it with No Time To Die. My wife and I saw it in an old 2 screen cinema in Cornwall and the screen was right up at the ceiling. Drop me a link to your new channel Trevor and I'll keep an watch for updates. A ten foot roller screen will never be perfect but putting weights on is not an option as it will eventually tear the edges until it finally falls apart altogether. There aren't many occasions when the ripples cause a distraction and as we used it exclusively for about 15 years we're rather used to it. The best solution for a screen is a painted wall but that's not an option with the present installation. We did try a couple of videos on the magnolia wall but the keystone effect was a little too obvious. It might take years to find a builder to modify the house so we can incorporate a bigger home cinema. Might open up the wall behind where I'm sitting in the video first to see if we can get the video projector to work from there. Super 8 probably won't be such a problem as 'Scope uses the 2x anamorphic squeeze lens which might almost fill the entire width of the ten foot screen. That's what we got it for 20 years ago but never really thought about how big it was, it was just the way to get the best out of Super 8 prints at the time. Video is almost catching up in that regard now. John.

I really enjoyed No Time To Die. Watched it at the IMAX (or Liemax) at Swiss Cottage Odeon. It had a great image. Sadly the 4k disc isn't the IMAX version and is in the scope ratio - there is far more on the screen top and bottom in the IMAX as you would expect and I found some of the composition a little tight on the disc. I did hear it was something to do with IMAX licensing - but not sure if that is true. My Super 8 collection is really building up in no small part due to your channel. I think painting a home cinema dark is a direct result of modern multiplex cinemas doing the same. However, use some masking and curtains down the side of the screen and you can do the room any colour you like and also stick glass framed pictures on the walls. Black all around the projected image is important though but create that border from the room to the screen with that masking and tabs and you'll be amazed what you can do in a screening room. It also has the benefit of meaning you still have a room in your house rather than a black box. It's worth a try next time you get the paint brush out! Don't know what colour I'm going to paint our new screening room but it may be a sort of grey to match Empire 1 when it was in its golden age during the mid-1990s. John.

Morning Steve. My father watched the Blu-ray of No Time To Die on Saturday and he doesn't believe that was Bond getting blown up at the end. I can't see how it could not have been but the old boy hasn't really got into all these reboot movies that have been appearing since Star Trek made them popular. I seemed to know they were going to kill Daniel Craig's Bond before watching this film but I hadn't seen, heard or read any reviews it just seemed to make sense because of how the Craig films started with Casino Royale. John.

I noticed your a star trek fan, and if you haven't got Star Trek the next generation on blu ray you should get it because the picture is brilliant and I got the latest bond movie on blu ray but it can't fit in the Bond 50th anniversary blu ray Boxset 😤 I hope you finish unpacking soon because moving is stressful, Great movie room👍

Thank you Andrew. We haven't quite finished moving in yet but it's a long story. Not much left to unpack and find a home for but we'll take time over it to get it right. A few jobs every day and we'll get there in the end. I was only saying recently that I should get the re-masters of The Next Generation on Blu-ray. I did see the first test disc when they hadn't quite found all the elements for the special effects so occasionally the image reverted to DVD quality and that made the difference look astounding. My wife Susanne has just reminded me that when we cleared out the wardrobes to move we found our Star Trek The Next Generation uniforms that we got for a fancy dress party years ago. I expect I'll wear that when I finally do a Star Trek KZread video... COMING SOON! John.

The amplifier is the VSA-907 Dominus which was the flagship from about 1999. I don't think they build them quite like that any longer. THX Ultra is a little more special than basic Dolby Atmos and as there is no way I can strap those Kef TDM rear speakers to the ceiling I don't think getting the latest Pioneer THX Ultra amp with Atmos and a host more speakers is viable. 7.1 might be an option though but not worth it unless we get a builder in to move the walls around for a much bigger cinema. There's no shortage of light on modern video projectors but what a bigger projected image will mean is that it will be easier to discern how good a disc is. Sometimes it's difficult on our tiny home screens to differentiate which release is better than another. With 'No Time To Die' the 4K disc is clearly superior to the Blu-ray but that would not have been so obvious before. John.

I don't want to risk tearing the good ol' ten footer so I'll see how I get on. The minor ripples that are there haven't really shown up so far and as I've used it for 30 years I'm aware that it's really only occasional credits and titles where they become apparent. We had that screen manufactured to drop in front of a big balcony window and doors when we lived in central London and it worked so well for that. But I did want to use it again here, although not ideally in the screening room. Had it in mind for occasional shows in the living room again but needs must! We need to find a builder!

I did put some links in one of these videos from 18 months ago to point people in the right direction at the time but here's one in the USA that still works: www.homecontrols.com/Add-A-Motor-Drapery-Motor By scrutinizing the few places that still had them for sale 18 months ago I was able to generate the right keywords to find people selling them here in the UK but that was only on eBay and I wasn't able to find any sellers when I looked again recently. There are probably other curtain motors out there that will do an even better job but these one work with X10 controllers which was the only automation method that offered the complete solution when I first did all this more than 20 years ago. There could be other methods today using a mobile phone as the controller. A bit more of a pain in the neck rather than just pushing buttons on an X10 controller but that may be the only way now. John.

This is THX so the same rules don't apply. Try yours up higher at the very back if you have Atmos and you may find that's a low cost improvement to help fill the room with sound. Better than that is to get dipole or tripole rears even if they're not true THX speakers as they really do send the sound all around the room. John.

You must hear where the sound is coming from not with a dipole somewhere behind you. Atmos changes the rules for speaker setup, i have an 5.1.2 atmos setup. I seen al your videos i like them al lot.

@@palmspar Atmos for the home must have different specifications than for cinema. THX is also a little different but nothing like that. Surround sound was intended to surround the audience with sound and THX took it a little further. Dolby Stereo was probably the best iteration of THX as the home speakers seemed to get a little downgraded after that. But the Kef TDM series are seriously heavy duty and we filled the big Victoria Hall at the Ealing Town Hall with the sound from them on five occasions. Apparently the front half of the hall shook during the T-Rex sequence of Jurassic Park and that was quite an achievement for a home system. Atmos does sound a little cheap by comparison but not having multi-directional speakers probably explains that and we could probably all improve on it quite easily. Might be worth giving some budget dipoles a try to eliminate the definite directional nature which can be a little distracting. Having said that there are occasions when a film can be fun with definite directional sound. John.

Hello John, hope you are well. I was just thinking, what if you were to buy one of those digital projector mounts that mount onto a ceiling. therefore you can have space for the 35 and super 8 projector when a hole is put in the back wall. anyways, just an idea. thanks.

It's something I had thought about Clark but I really don't like the idea of a projector hanging upside down from the ceiling. Never say never though. The wall behind me in the video has the staircase on the other side of it so it will mean opening up the under stairs completely (it's only partially open to a cupboard right now) and seeing how viable it is to put projectors in there. They'll be down a little too low but might be the best short term solution if we can't find builders to knock things about for a while.
