Spicy Chili Oil Perfectly Coats Xi'an Famous Foods' Most Popular Dish | Legendary Eats

If you walk into a Xi'an Famous Foods, you'll likely hear the rhythm of wide hand-pulled noodles slapping onto the counter. The restaurant's biang biang noodles are the star of its most popular dish, spicy cumin lamb noodles, one of the dishes born out of a father-son dream to share the cuisine of their hometown. The city of Xi'an sits at the eastern end of the Silk Road, where flavors and cuisines of China and the Middle East combine, and today, the cuisine attracts hungry New Yorkers to Xi'an Famous Foods' 10 locations.

I visited years ago and the noodles are certainly delicious but I’ll never forget that Jason Wang donated ~$75,000 to the suicide prevention hotline the week Anthony Bourdain died. This family will never forget how Bourdain’s visit jumpstarted their massive success.

Indeed. On KZread, I saw recently some happy people in rural Xi'an foraging casually for special meals wild arugula, wild thyme, etc., and even wild morel mushroom, which would be outrageously expensive in the west, and the ways they prepared and combined these organic food ingredients with, for example, lamb, vegetables, starch, etc. were just so "international" !!! I think Silk Road definitely contributed to the exciting multiculturalism of Xi'an.

Thanks FI for highlighting Xian FF - they deserve all the fame and success they've earned. And thanks to the Xi'an FF staff for all the memorable meals that my friends, family, and I have enjoyed (and will hopefully continue to enjoy for many years!). I'm minutes away from their central kitchen in Woodside, so y'all are quite literally close to my heart. Much respect! Queens, represent! ✌🏽

I’m envious, I wish I eat that in my house and I’m Chinese. But sadly, my folks are not huge fan of spices. In fact, my mother is Cantonese/Southern Chinese. She has this philosophy that food should be ‘pure’ or natural; always lightly flavored and balanced. For example, rice should stay white and never mixed with any stuff, except fried rice.

@@caglioso yeeeeeeee. Used to go there before Anthony Bourdain went starting around 2006. My dad was always one of those Jonathan Gold type foodies who did heavy amounts of research into the best places in New York and he heard about it through the grapevine. After the Bourdain episode aired we got really excited about it and went there again. Some of my other favorites in that area was that dollar Peking duck shop that I believe was down the street (it’s been closed for a while I think) and this one lamb skewer stall somewhere in flushing that I always forget the name of.
