Before there was Blade...there was HAWK. The first Black heroic antihero, and the only human on TV that is way cooler badder smarter better dressed and deadlier than Shaft ever could be. Hawk is the truest O.G. Take notes. We salute you and the show's writers, Avery. And we miss you, Robert Ulrich aka Spencer.

There was Spenser for Hire, Mike Hammer, The Equilizer, Cagney and Lacey, Murder She Wrote, Remington Steele, Hart to Hart, Magnum P.I., Jake and the Fat Man, Crazy Like a Fox, Hunter, The A Team. Cable on the other hand, it would be perfect for. The show was less edgy than the books. Would love to see the books made full edginess. Example - in one of the books, Hawk tells Spenser about a hit on him. He said he turned it down. When asked who he referred, he said , "No one, because the only one I would refer for the job is you." (So Spenser was not above crossing over the line, it appears. On TV he was always a good guy.) Who to play the characters, that is the hard part. Dennis Haysbert would have been great 30 years ago, but that is the same age as Brooks.

Excellent choice of scenes. I'd like to make honorable mention of a scene in the episode, "Among Friends", with Hawk and Spenser pretty much declaring war on one another. You picked two good ones from the episode where a Hawk imposter shot Marty Quirk, the scene later on when Spenser found out who the real shooter was, a guy named Tyrone Blackwell (played by the late Badja Djola) , meets with Hawk at a secret place and tells him. Read the books. Hawk in the books is basically Avery Brooks. When reading you can see him doing the part.

I still have a few episodes of Spenser (the pilot among them) taped in the 80s. Have any of the Urich series been released on DVD sets? I don't think that Avery Brooks would cringe at being remembered for "Deep Space Nine." BUT I'd read every Spenser novel before the series started and he WAS Hawk incarnate, just as Urich was Spenser; Joe Mantagna is a fine actor and caught parts of Spenser, but Urich had the physicality to get it all.

I have always said in reading the Spenser novels it is basically Avery Brooks doing Hawk. Robert Urich does Spenser justice. I need an updated version of this series.

@blossomingbeauty No, you had actually said "you dig" in that 5 stars comment. I remembered Hawk making a comment about the "United Defenders of International Goodwill", which caused Spenser to reply "UDIG?". In other words, I was agreeing with the Lexicon and Language comment, but decided to expound on it with Hawk's humor. IMO "Hawk" is Avery Brooks' best role... I don't think that the role of Benjamin Sisko allowed him to display just how talented he is.

I have to disagree with you some. Hawk's uniqueness was personified because of his character standing alone in the media. After the vietnam war there were many black men on the level of that depicted by hawk. They remain in the shadows.
