To fit the game onto the GBA's screen, they chose to cut out every fourth line of pixels. The result is shoulderless Mario. I personally first played the game on 3DS Virtual Console, and right now my go-to is Switch Online. Hopefully I can get an NES to play it on that in the future, I already bought the cartridge. RIP Super Mario Bros. 35 version :(

  • @vaguerant

The other thing the GBA version does is that instead of just cutting those lines, it alternates which lines are cut. Because of the slow LCD response time on the GBA, there's no flickering, it just looks a bit blurry.

The flickering being smoothed out by the LCD is a cheap-ass way of doing a hardware-assisted downsample filter. Fun fact, huge numbers of DS games relied on that to not have visible flicker as the screens flipped between 15 and 18 bit color on every other frame.

I'm actually a speed runner (and current world record holder) of Speed Mario Bros., which is the version found in Ultimate NES Remix. I've never seen many of the top SMB players acknowledge its existence, so I was very excited to see you finally play it. It's certainly a difficult game to master due to the speed, but eventually you can actually do a lot of the tricks found in any% SMB. It's a joy to see someone as skilled as you struggle as much as I did when I first played it though.

I struggled mightily with that game, and later in life, when i watched people play nes SMB, i was like "wow this really doesn't look that hard, why was i so bad?" a few years ago, i played deluxe again and that game is DIFFICULT. the fact that you can only see six feet in front of your face is terrifying, and it leads to such moments as blind jumps in 8-1. it's awful. it's great.

Great video! I never knew there were so many difference in some, like the Animal Crossing version. You may be aware of this, but there are a few other versions of SMB1: 1. Super Mario Bros (PAL revision 1) - this was a revised version released on the NES in PAL countries (Europe and Oceania). The original release in the PAL region was the same as the American release, so the gameplay and music was 1/6th too slow. Aside from the gameplay and music being sped up to make up for the fact that PAL runs at 50Hz (they messed up with the music so it actually runs twice as fast though), you can also jump slightly higher. For example, take the mushroom/fire flower at the end of 2-1. In this version, you can hit the block with a running jump from the ground. Unfortunately, if you want to play this on real hardware, you will need a PAL NES and a 288p 50Hz-compatible display. 2. VS Super Mario Bros - this was released in arcades in 1986. It's mostly similar to the original. but replaces some levels with levels from SMB2j, in particular levels that were harder versions of earlier levels in the original (5-3, 5-4, 6-4, 7-2, 7-3). Maze solutions in 4-4 and 7-4 are different and powerups were moved, replaced or removed to make the game harder. For example, there is no longer a powerup at the start of 5-2, so you have to take on the Hammer Bro. without one (assuming you didn't start the level with one). Ending similar to SMB2j. Of course, real hardware here requires an arcade machine, but it is also available on Nintendo Switch. 3. All-Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. - released on Famicom Disk System in 1986. Replaces many characters and other sprites with new ones related to the All Night Nippon radio show. Also has new solutions to mazes and replaces repeated levels with levels from SMB2j. Some powerups moved, replaced or removed. Physics are the same as SMB2j, so you jump much higher off enemies. You can also play as Luigi with his SMB2j physics, which is a far better way of doing so than Super Luigi Bros. Multiplayer removed, same as SMB2j. After beating the game eight times, you unlock SMB2j worlds A-D. An original copy is extremely rare (only 3,000 copies made) but can be played on original hardware using FDSStick. Personally I've found these an interesting way to mix things up on repeat playthroughs of the game. Finally, though this doesn't truly count, five of the e-reader levels of Super Mario Advance 4 are SMB3 versions of SMB1 levels (1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-2). They're fun to play through in this way. You can play as Mario or Luigi (with different physics). I would strongly recommend playing SMB Deluxe. It's challenges are really fun, and there are new levels that you race Boo in. In fact, in 8-4, the Cheep-cheeps did appear, but the screen crunch is so small you couldn't see them. Imagine how hard 2-3 and 7-3 are in this version!

That was a lot of fun! A note about the Game Boy Advance version: it's an emulated version of the original game. This means that, unlike the Super NES port, all the original tricks work as intended. The downside, as you probably guessed, is that they decided to crush 256 x 224 pixels into 240 x 160 pixels… which makes the game look a fright.

A few other neat versions you should maybe check out: 1. Vs. Super Mario Bros. 2. All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. 3. Super Mario All-Stars on the Wii 4. Super Mario Bros. on the Game & Watch (the original, not the 35th anniversary version) 5. The European release (it has barely any changes, except for filling in a block in the underwater stages and moving the Koopas in 8-2 at the start) 6. Nintendo World Championships version 7. Masterpieces version in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii U 8. BS Super Mario Collection Week 1 (essentially the Lost Levels version with a world map, on the Sateliview) 9. Play-Choice 10 version (An additional arcade release) 10. It was possible to transfer Super Mario Bros. to the Game Boy Advance temporarily from Animal Crossing. I'm just putting this here because I can't find any tenth official Super Mario Bros. release. Another cool one is the fanmade Commodore 64 port, it's not official but it's very well made.

Nintendo should hire M2ª to do an SMB Definitive Edition. Include all the actually different versionsᵇ, with proper emulation of their differences (but also a version of SMBDX that shows the full screen, rather than a small portion of it) and all the extra stuff (like the challenge modes from SMB). ªHire M2 because M2 are actually *good* at this sort of thing ᵇBy "actually different" I mean "not emulated ports". The GBA "NES Classics" version is just the NES version emulated, but with the screen squashed, for instance. Of the ones in this video, definitely NES, All-Stars, SMBDX, Super Luigi Bros and Speed Mario Bros, at least...

it was very interesting to see you try SMB Deluxe on the game boy color for the first time. Indeed there are many differences and fixed glitches, but its still possible to do two classics: the walljump, and small fire. Would be interesting to see you go back to it at least one more time for the bonus content too 👀 Other suggestions: the SMB1 ports for the Genesis, Commodore 64 and PC Engine. They'll likely work much like the NES versions too

Oh man, I did not know Speed Mario was a thing! I recently made my own NES emulator as a hobby project and I can hold down Shift or press U to make it play at unlocked framerates. On my laptop, that's about 125 fps, so this is basically playing SMB on my laptop with Shift held down. I've only beaten the first two levels like that, and that was only for fun. I didn't know there was a real version of the game built around that! Haha. Now I need to play for longer and see how far I can get.
