Speedrunners Hate Him! The History of Speedrunning Diablo 2's Slowest Class.

A brief history of the Barbarian Normal speedrun in Diablo 2. Massive thanks to all the runners who came along for interviews. It was a true struggle to cut our great conversations down to these tiny snippets.

Editing videos is not a fun task so I only do these very sporadically. Seems I already have a year's work ahead of me updating the 8 player record history and covering the Hell barb records. I only make these because I love D2 speedruns and think they should exist - I don't really get many views so if someone else thinks they can do better (or even lesser!): PLEASE DO. I WILL WATCH THE HECK OUT OF YOUR VIDEOS.

    good thing the barb has a skill that allows him to deal pure magic damage, something only 1 enemy type in the entire game is resistant to. And a skill that ignores defense entirely. For a speedrun a barb is difficult sure. Casually the barb is a beast.

    Was a long time competitive Diablo 2 classic player, and played a ton of LoD as well, mostly on USWest. Barbarian, Bone Nec, and Hdin were my main jam, with barb being my strongest mechanically speaking. I would've absolutely loved to compete in the speedrunning scene, but am long retired. Nothing was more sad in the post 1.10 closed bnet than barbarians being relegated to a lower tier than literally everyone else (except for maybe necros) as far as needing the absolute best uniques and runewords to pvm in hell diff... Other classes' skills having such insane synergy boosts, combined with running into enough physical immune enemies (what a bad design for a hack n slash LOL)... Nice to see some love.

    don't forget, anything that's not physical immune still has 50% physical resist in hell, and the only way around it is a single target melee attack that removes your ability to leech and makes you more vulnerable at the same time. meanwhile, sorceresses get a passive skill that reduces enemy cold resistance and has no downsides. just incredible game design.

    This was a really neat insight into the history, thank you :) I've been mostly an speedrun-enthusiast on the sidelines at the time, and been mostly interested in the absurdity of attempting to do Hell Hardcore runs for Barbarian and Paladin. But when you mentioned the innovation of using the Nadir helmet I was like: "I told you guys :D", since I'd been using it whenever I happened to get that runeword along the way ^^ This was a fun jaunt into the past, and the more recent history that I missed

Speed running has helped me to enjoy the gam much more because you dont just aim for the really good gear - the progress in d2r is sooo rewarding when you know the little things. From all the shortcuts (b, q, c etc.) up to filling your belt, way point / portal etc. these really small things which everyone takes for granted, but when you actually just play causally, never really think about. I love the d2r low level rune words; I wish a few more where there and Stealth alternative were present for some casters/melee builds.

    hit chance formula is great and not an issue what is truly awful is monsters BLOCKING your attacks on top of that. That 40% chance to hit Baal you see in the character screen is actually 18% because of his chance to block what is slightly bad about the hit chance formula is that it's too easy to fall back in levels by act 5 normal (monster levels in act 5 normal are higher than in act 1 nightmare), and there isn't an easy way to catch up in levels (because getting XP in modern D2 is about killing lots of monsters - unlike older versions where only the boss monsters gave increased XP)

    Great video, but I have to mention, kinda weird to put every time into the same graph, since they're not really the same category. In this video you covered D2:LoD P1, D2:R P1 and D2:R PX, which makes sense, covering only D2:LoD would leave the story incomplete, but I wish you at least put some indication of where each category progression begins and ends in the final graph, because otherwise it really makes it seem like its all the same category. In fact, a lot can be improved in the final graph, like adding a time (as in when the run was made) axis, adding the actual times next to the icons, having some grid lines to make easier to see, so on and so forth. Of course, the video was still very entertaining to watch, take this as improvement suggestions for your next video, which I'll be sure to watch. Cheers.

    Barbarian has always been the slowest class even outside of speedrunning. I'm not sure why Llama says it's the best class of 1.00 and hammerdins are terrible. "Hurrdurr but whirlwind doe", but up until level 30, its a long, painful grind especially if you're running spear/pole. God forbid you run into an Extra Fast Teleportation Stone Skin of Multi-projectile Lightning Enchanted. Hammerdin's were not only strong, but Redemption allows them to be extremely self sufficient, to the point you can borderline ignore the lack of shopped mana potions. Concentration worked at full power, rather than half in later patches, so imagine your 250ish damage hammer being boosted by a 400% aura, and you can regen at almost any time. Every other caster I've tried is just a step down with the next best one being bone Necro with Amp CE spam, and the worst ones being sorc and javazon. Javazon is just straight up disfunctional.

    Barbarian is that class that is, by far, the most item dependent. This reflects in the speedrun, since you don't have time to get good gear. And such, it will always be the most luck-dependent class (except maybe after some balance changes). Except most of the warcries, both masteries and combat skill both give percentage increases on the gear you have. So if you have amazing gear, your barb will be even more amazing. If you're naked or with crap gear... well, the skills won't make it much better. And I think that Barb was nerfed initially, because the gear in the game got better with patches and the extra runewords. Barb would've gotten OP in those cases. I have to say, I don't know much details about the Leap attack changes, but having one skill that's much better than the others is also not good. Makes everything less interesting, gives less choice since that skill becomes mandatory if you need performance. By the looks of it, I'd say that Leap attack needs to be nerfed a bit now, but the AoE damage can be kept, just maybe kept in check somehow. The true AoE of barb is the whirlwind. I still think that's the one that should be improved. I think that a nice balance for it would be to have a limit of hits it can do, after which it stops, if it didn't reach the destination. Like 10+whirlwind level number of hits. This way, you can keep it being high damage. You can keep it still very useful vs few/single targets, as you attack it/them very quickly. But still have a limit, so if you have 100 monsters it's not OP. As for the speedrunning part... well, maybe a new meta to go to level 30 ASAP then finish the game is in place ^^

  • @TheSilv3r

    @TheSilv3r

    Жыл бұрын

    Nice write up. Back in 1.0 leap attack was like the Paladin's smite in that it had 100% chance to hit, so I feel the latest patch is one step toward bringing back that balance. It's definitely not OP (it really drops off in nightmare), but it's a step in the right direction. I think you're idea of buffing WW is really interesting, would be cool if it had +IAS every level or something so that at like level 30 you'd be back to the "hits every frame" window like it was in original. That would probably be OP now and kill the PvP scene without changes to block mechanics too, but it feels like there's something that could be done in that space.

  • @Winnetou17

    @Winnetou17

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TheSilv3r Thanks! Good to know that the skill is not OP. I think that simply making it have 100% chance to hit is not that uhm.. cool. Having a small AoE with extra damage is both cool (brings satisfaction to use) while also making sense. On that note, just crossed my mind. What if the Leap attack damage is the weapon damage + some %bonus, buuut, since it's also yourself, also give bonus flat damage (in a bigger area than the weapon damage) based on your str/vit/level (something that scales with you, preferably something that reflects how buff you are) and the sum of all strength requirement of everything you have equipped. The idea being that high str req - this thing is heavy. Heavy stuff - lots of damage when landing. Image having sacred armor and aegis with no weapon and one-shot killing fallens and such just by leaping into them. Though this feels too specific to ever be implemented officially, but it should be possible in a mod.

    I feel like speedrunning is for people who were disappointed every time they didn't get homework in highschool.

    I still think the worst designed class is the paladin. Who in the right mind decided that a melee class with auras had to sacrifice his main melee attack, ie the RMB 'walk to location hacking everything in your way', to use them auras, leaving them with the useless LMB 'attack specific target' attack only? Even the Sorcerer, the supposed weakest melee class, can still use the RMB melee attack without having to sacrifice all his magical ability.... I have actually done playthroughs with aura-free pallies for this simple reason..... pure vengence/zeal, aura skills only for synergies, auras never actually used as the loss of RMB is a bigger pain than the loss of the auras.....

    Gosh dangit, 30sec in and I already had to pause and laugh...that red lightning attack from Diablo in Resurrected is just SO HILARIOUSLY PUNY LOOKING, I can't get over it even now. They made this big fiery lightning beam deal in 2d crap graphics back in the vanilla D2 and it looked scary and badass, and now it's just some piddly little thin red lightning that looks almost as threatening as Rakanishu. I just can't hahahhahahaha...it's like they forgot half of the effect, like someone was supposed to put fire under the red lightning, some flame breath effects, like on Heroes of the Storm but longer range or something, idk, but nope!

    Would be cool if there was a category for each of your class bests combined. Meaning you wouldn't have to do all classes in one sitting, but improving your Barbarian by 30 secs would improve your overall time by 30 secs. Same with a 15 sec improvement on your Sorc, which would improve your overall 15 secs as well.

    in its earliest iteration, the barb is very very fun to play, the whirlwind was very powerful (or should i say, balanced when compared to the other mega farmer class i.e sorc/ama). mana drain and life drain worked with undead too, so ww was supa. then comes a time when pvp'er complained it being op in pvp. so they gutted ww on a whim. while leaving nothing to make up for the void.

    Back in early d2 casters didn't have easy access to unlimited mana. Couldn't buy mana potions at all. Made leach and regen alot more important. So melee had more of a fit in the mix not being as mana reliant.

    i go minimal life, high dex.. which is what you're supposed to do if you're hurting for A/R, i quickly craft crushing blow items, and get high attack speed.. the barbs certaintly not the best, but these complainers make it seem way worse than it is. play smarter.
