    I do listen to you guys almost every day I walk or ride my bike. I’m 63 years old. I bike about 12-15 miles or walk about 3.5 miles alternating days. You motivate me and makes the time just fly by. Thank you so much.

    Ditto! Exam Room Podcast is instrumental in supporting those of us who wish to live healthier lives! I feel like I have reprogrammed myself to stop eating food that doesn't support good health. Having lost siblings who consistently made unhealthy food choices prior to their earlier than necessary deaths (having succumbed to the SAD), I think of them any time I want something unhealthy and I immediately choose not to indulge.     Personal experience, it does not matter your age, you gender, post menopause etc. This approach works. I use Healthy , John McDougall, Essylstein approach. I’ve lost over 10 pounds even though I started with 25.0 BMI.

    To Clarify one of the people I follow has a Healthy Emmie KZread etc channel. She also featured Healthy Mommy who has taken it off and kept it off in her 60s. Healthy Dad made a cookbook. They use the 50/50 plate to lose weight, and then maintenance is easy once you understand the basics. I didn’t sign up for her private service, I just watched the free KZread and also Jeff Novak, RD for registered dietician, has a great video on calorie density. It’s so much easier than tracking or counting calories. Watch his video that is a presentation style. He’s a funny rather short fun loving guy, with lots of expertise n the topic.

    Avocado makes a delicious " dressing", mash it, add seasonings & a bit of lemon or lime juice. Distribute well into salad by mixing it in, instead of just putting on top. You can add balsamic vinegar or maple syrup, thin it out with a bit of oj....options & flavor combinations are endless!❤

    I bought into the low fat craze as a young woman in my late teens and for 40 years ate that way. I always suffered from anxiety/depression which affected my life negatively in so many ways. 5 years ago I learned that our cells all have saturated fat in them and as hard as it was to add butter to my vegetables, high quality ev oil oil etc...my mental and emotional health finally normalized. Trust me...it was one of the hardest things I've ever done...to change my mentality on fat. It took me the best part of a year to lose my fear of eating fat. These exclusions cause eating disorders and I am living proof. I live on pur farm, grown a huge veg garden, including apples & 3 kinds of berries, I grind our own cert organic wheat for 100% ww bread. So I have eaten 20 or more plants in a day for 45 years. I also eat some wild meat, fish, dairy and I feel the best ever & no more eating disorder & my blood numbers are excellent & no meds. I have learned that one way of eating doesn't fit all people and we can be healthy eating different and with gratitude. I am not a junk food eater, however, if it happens once in a while my body is completely fine. I'm grateful to have found that fat, even saturated fat... is not a villain. Its necessary.

    I respectfully disagree the doc’s assertion that increased metabolism stops when exercise stops. Certain exercises, especially weight training, induce a series of positive post-exercise responses from our body which consume energy. These adaptation activities include muscle repair and muscle growth. Personally, based on my health tracker, after my early morning weight training my heart rate and calorie burn typically remain elevated for at least 6-8 hours (sometimes even more, until bed time). To sum it up, weight training exercise is easily my go-to method to ramp up my metabolism. In case you wonder, I’m a man in my mid 50s.

    One of the reasons women gain weight at menopause is that it often interferes with their sleep. Add to that the fact that exhaustion from lack of sleep often leads to less physical activity and exercising, women do see menopausal weight gain.The stress of menopause can also raise levels of cortisol, which can make central adiposity more likely.

    My vice is peanut butter. I can keep oil out of my diet ( I used to LOVE olive oil) but I can't find anything that replaces my love for peanut butter. I'm certain every extra pound I carry is made of it 😂😂😂 At 51, my experience with metabolism is that it's on fire when set myself in advance with healthy snacks in house and at work. The moment I get too busy to plan in advance, potato chips become a food group and my metabolism crawls. I think this because I pay attention to hair and nail growth and see patterns.

    I'm also going to suggest powdered peanut butter. I like it because the flavor is great but most of the natural oils have been removed, so it has much less fat. I like it so much that I recently made plant based peanut butter cookies using it just as I would regular peanut butter. They turned out GREAT!

    I'm 58 and my weight is much lower than when I graduated High School. I had a BMI of 25 then. My current BMI is around 18: slightly underweight. Menopause caused me to lose weight.

    I have not gained weight because of menopause, also weigh a bit less than when graduated high school and have bmi 18, but I do find body shape changes some as we get older. Abdominal area poufs out a bit more and there is less elasticity in skin etc.

    If it helps, it is a minor effect at most. It may be causing harm too which is usually the case with supplements. Placebo effect is powerful and more likely reason for people that think there is benefit. But bet is starchy whole food plant based diet, lose weight if heavy.

    @@sandunravisanka938 Dr Bernard would not tell people to take a drug or supplement for slow metabolism because most people do not have it. But doesn’t hurt to check thyroid function and make sure they are getting enough iodine from seaweed.

    Dr. Barnard failed to point out that the more exercise you do, the more mitochondria your muscles make, and the more effective at burning energy they become. So exercise pays a much larger part than he said.

    Chuck DON'T worry about turning 40. I am 73 years old and wear the same size jeans that I wore when I graduated H.S. in 1967 (29" waist). I am 90 percent plant based and eat NO processed food. I DO eat 2 eggs and an avocado every day and take 12 tablespoons of oil every day (olive oil, MCT, fish oil and avocado oil). I got a colonoscopy at age 65 but other than that the last time I was at a doctor was in the spring of 1969.

    Please avocados cost a whole ton of water, don't get them from Chile. Several villages without water because of it. Check ep 2 or 3 of the series Rotten (on netflix) it centers around the avocado business.

    I tried vegan. I cooked my own beans .are grains vegetable fruit soy nuts. No process at all no oils at all. No condition previously. My blood sugar was 70 went 95. My cholesterol was 170 went to 220. My tryg. Went 185. A1c 5.5..and I had shakes...I don't eat process red meat or cheeses pork...I wkout since 19 now 63. I went back to eating fish eggs whites a little turkey... My gums are better.. my shakes went away...I also have ostopenia ..went back to heavy weights.. a little yogurt feel better

    Did you seek medical intervention or advice when you experienced problems or did you self diagnose and assume that you solved the underlying problem by a diet change? Did you use an app like Cronometer while you were in transition? Did you make sure you were getting enough calories? Because what you’re describing doesn’t make sense unless you have something else going on. I’d go to the Dr. Good luck.

    Gives you placebo effect and heart disease and encourages cancer. Thats not the kind of result Neal recommends. But if you want to get benefit then lose some weight, get exercise, and eat starchy staples whole food plant based diet.
